Being a kid is like having two permanent police officers watching you all the time - even when you´re going to the bathroom. At least that’s how it feels to Billy March. He’s been grounded for 63% of the past month. The thing is, every time Billy almost gets his parents’ trust back, his mind wanders off, and he causes another disaster! Like the time he and his best friend Keenan decided to play droid war in a parking lot — and ended up launching a shopping cart into a car… Now Mom and Dad are threatening to send Billy to a psychologist. They may even make him take brain drugs! But deep down, Billy really worries that Dad wishes he had a different son. He’ll never be as perfect as his two sisters. Maybe he doesn’t belong in this family at all. But maybe, just maybe, talking to a ´´shrink” won’t be as terrible as Billy thinks. Even if the doctor’s last name sounds eerily like the word grave… 1. When I learned that I had stage-four lung cancer, I started the hard battle to survive it. What I knew then could have fit into a thimble. There was a tumor in my lung along with its partner in my brain. Life had to change quickly for Fred and me because we weren’t sure where our path was leading us to. During the surgeries and treatment phases, I could not do simple tasks such as laundry or the grocery shopping. Blessed with good friends and family members we were able to live an almost normal life. Fred set up a whiteboard in the living room for scheduling my trips to the hospital. Calls came from friends and family to sign up and Fred would put their names on the board so that I never had to worry about who was picking me up. We were grateful for the medical teams who walked us through brain surgery, thoracic surgery, and treatment, which included 15 sessions of whole brain surgery along with four months of chemotherapy. We listened to what they told us to do and how to live in our own home. A bond develops between the medical staff and the patient, as well as with friends and family. There are no secrets to conceal from them; our medical team saved my life because we told them everything. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Al Moulliet. As we use the Web for social networking, shopping, and news, we leave a personal trail. These days, linger over a Web page selling lamps, and they will turn up at the advertising margins as you move around the Internet, reminding you, tempting you to make that purchase. Search engines such as Google can now look deep into the data on the Web to pull out instances of the words you are looking for. And there are pages that collect and assess information to give you a snapshot of changing political opinion. These are just basic examples of the growth of ´´Web intelligence´´, as increasingly sophisticated algorithms operate on the vast and growing amount of data on the Web, sifting, selecting, comparing, aggregating, correcting; following simple but powerful rules to decide what matters. While original optimism for Artificial Intelligence declined, this new kind of machine intelligence is emerging as the Web grows ever larger and more interconnected. Gautam Shroff takes us on a journey through the computer science of search, natural language, text mining, machine learning, swarm computing, and semantic reasoning, from Watson to self-driving cars. This machine intelligence may even mimic at a basic level what happens in the brain. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Neil Shah. Ramraiding is where a vehicle such as a van, SUV, car, or other heavy vehicle is driven through the windows/shutters or doors of a closed shop. The film Shopping by Paul W. S. Anderson is thought to have been inspired by the very ramraids that took place in his hometown in England. This audiobook catalogues the rise of this worldwide crime wave where the car was the instrument of the criminals to get their ill-gotten gains. Includes an interview with one of the brains behind the most successful ramraid gang ever and follows his rise and eventual downfall. Feel the tension build up, feel the power surge of the turbo engine, hear the squeal of the wheels, the roar of the engine and later on...the slap of the cuffs as they go on! 1. Language: English. In the tradition of Brain on Fire and When Breath Becomes Air, Gerda Saunders´ Memory´s Last Breath is an unsparing, beautifully written memoir - a true-life Still Alice that captures Saunders´ experience as a fiercely intellectual person living with the knowledge that her brain is betraying her. Saunders´ book is uncharted territory in the writing on dementia, a diagnosis one in nine Americans will receive. Based on the ´´field notes´´ she keeps in her journal, Memory´s Last Breath is Saunders´ astonishing window into a life distorted by dementia. She writes about shopping trips cut short by unintentional shoplifting, car journeys derailed when she loses her bearings, and the embarrassment of forgetting what she has just said to a room of colleagues. Coping with the complications of losing short-term memory, Saunders nonetheless embarks on a personal investigation of the brain and its mysteries, examining science and literature and immersing herself in vivid memories of her childhood in South Africa. Written in a distinctive voice without a trace of self-pity, Memory´s Last Breath is a remarkable, aphorism-free contribution to the literature of dementia - and an eye-opening personal memoir that will grip all adventurous listeners. 1. Growing up in a home where there is addiction or relationship trauma puts a child at great risk for long-term, post-traumatic stress effects that adversely compromise adult relationships. Best-selling author, psychologist, and psychodramatist Tian Dayton examines this trauma through an exploration of the way the brain and body process frightening or painful emotions and experiences in childhood. She shows how these traumas can become catalysts for unhealthy, self-medicating behaviors including drug and alcohol abuse, food issues, and sex, gambling, and shopping addictions.
