Learn about the feeling of l´Esprit de l´Escalier with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. There’s nothing like a good comeback. It’s witty, snappy and completely devastating to your verbal sparring partner. A woman once said to US President Calvin Coolidge: ´´I’ve made a bet with a friend that I can get you to say at least three words to me this evening. What do you have to say to that?” Coolidge looked at her and calmly replied: ´´You lose.” But how many times have you gone completely blank when arguing with someone, only to think of the perfect comeback an hour later? It’s too late, of course. Whoever you were arguing with is long gone, and even if they’re still around, a witty comeback is only witty if it’s delivered off the cuff. More than anything, you wish you could wind back time and deliver your riposte at the perfect moment. That’s l’esprit de l’escalier. Learn about Stockholm Syndrome with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. At first glance two of the 1970´s most notorious bank robberies would seem to have nothing in common. They occurred eight months apart, for different motives, on opposite sides of the globe. But these two incidents would prove seminal to the development and understanding of a curious and once controversial psychological condition; Stockholm Syndrome. On the 15th of April 1974, the Sunset District branch of the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco was robbed. Security footage showed a young, attractive urban guerrilla brandishing a machine gun and ordering people in the bank to lie face down on the ground. The term Stockholm Syndrome had been coined less than a year earlier by psychiatrist Nils Bejerot after the robbery of the Norrmalmstorg Kreditbanken in Stockholm. The bungled robbery resulted in a hostage situation during which four bank employees were held captive for more than five days from August 23rd to August 28th 1973. Learn about the feeling of Déjà Vu with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. When Charles Dickens wrote in his 1850 novel David Copperfield about ´´a feeling, that comes over us occasionally, of what we are saying and doing having been said and done before”, he may well have been referring to the experience of déjà vu. When the pop star Madonna took the lead role in the 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, her character referred to her emerging snippets of memory after a head injury as exactly that. But even if it feels like you have experienced something before, is this always an experience of déjà vu? The experience of déjà vu is hard for the individual to explain. Indeed, despite ongoing efforts, it has also proven hard for scientists and psychiatrists to fully comprehend, primarily because the experience itself is so highly subjective. Déjà vu is not a flashback. Here, the individual is able to locate themself in the event they view as familiar, thereby simply recalling having been in the same situation before. Science has made the leap from the lab to come to a store near you - and the effects on us are phenomenal. Corporations in hypercompetition are now using the new mind sciences to analyze how and when we shop and the hidden triggers that persuade us to consume. From bargains in the Big Apple to the bustling bazaars of Istanbul, from in-store to interactive and online to mobile, neuromarketing pioneer Dr. David Lewis goes behind the scenes of the ´´persuasion industry´´ to reveal the powerful tools, techniques, technologies, and psychologies seeking to stimulate us all to buy more - often without us consciously realizing it. A revelatory inside story, The Brain Sell is a tale of engineered behaviors and ´´atmospherics´´ - of subliminal messaging - and of TVs that sometimes watch us while we´re watching them. During his journey Lewis explores fascinating questions such as: Why should a particular font used to describe soup make it taste better? Why do some retailers actively encourage shoppers to haggle? How do the tools and techniques of ´´the brain sell´´ influence shopper behavior, and what can you - as a retailer or marketer - learn from them? Informed, illuminating, stimulating: You cannot afford to miss The Brain Sell.
