Sherlock Holmes and the Julia Moriarty Trilogy:...

In these stories, author Dick Gillman introduces the character of Julia Moriarty. Holmes and Watson become acutely aware of her existence in 1894 in the story aptly recorded by Watson as that of ´´The Shadow of James Moriarty´´. Shopping for a Christmas gift for Holmes exposes Watson to an underworld that he had hoped had disappeared with the death of James Moriarty. The New Year brings even greater peril as an attempt is made on Holmes´s life and once again the shadow of James Moriarty seems to be reaching out. Revenge is clearly the motive but who is seeking to finally destroy Holmes? In order to solve the mystery, Holmes must offer his life in order to attempt a grand deception. In the second story, Watson goes on to describe how their paths cross again in 1897 when Holmes investigates the tragic case of ´´The Highgate Magician´´. The mysterious disappearance on stage of a magician´s assistant is the beginning of a case that draws Holmes and Watson into the world of international intrigue. A German pianist, a diplomat working as an aide to the Kaiser is enraged by Holmes´s activities during the investigation. However, this chance meeting inadvertently saves Holmes from certain death. A secret deal struck by the British Government with an old foe threatens to tear Sherlock and Mycroft apart. Only Holmes´s unique skills of observation and deduction coupled with swift action can halt a very public assassination and avert war in Europe. In 1899, Watson recounts the case of ´´The Severed Finger´´ in which Julia Moriarty reveals her truly ruthless nature. This, in turn, leads Holmes to describe her as the very embodiment of evil. Holmes and Watson´s evening is disturbed by a gruesome find by cabbie Henry Wiggins. A cryptic note and a freshly severed finger trigger a desperate search for its owner. Mycroft is summoned when the involvement of Julia Moriarty is discovered. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Karl Orenstein. In this hour, novelist Erin Morgenstern´s darkly magical novel revolves around a mysterious circus and a contest that pits two young students of magic against each other. Next, Alex Stone is a professional magician with a physics degree. In a new book, Fooling Houdini, he breaks ranks with his fellow magicians, revealing some of the tricks of the trade and their basis in cognitive science. He performs a feat of psychic magic with our radio audience. Then, the last remaining magician´s colony in India -- Kathputli, in Delhi -- is slated to be be bulldozed to make way for shopping malls and high rises. Filmmakers Jim Goldblum and Adam Weber are documenting this thousand-year old tradition of conjuring and illusion before it disappears forever. After that, in traditional cultures, magic can be more than performance -- it can be a way of seing the world and a form of medicine. Philosopher and ecologist David Abram shares lessons from his experiences with shamanic healers. He also performs a little sleight-of-hand in our studio.Following that, historian Deborah Harkness studies the history of alchemy and Elizabethan magic. First, he has to make sure they both make it through a tense holiday season, though. For Ivy, things are less clear. She knows Jack is hiding something but can´t figure out exactly what. Things go from bad to worse during a shopping outing when a masked robber is shot in the back by his partner and left to die in Ivy´s arms. Ivy is determined to find the truth behind the man´s actions, and even Jack can´t talk her down when determination and desperation clash. Sometimes life can be a real witch. Meet Maxie Duncan. Your average 23-year-old blonde. If you can call being wealthy, gorgeous, and knowing what the future holds at times, average. After her fiancee blindsides her with a breakup at their favorite restaurant, she leaves Maine for a shot at being Hollywood´s new ´it girl.´ There´s only one problem. She´s never acted a day in her life. When a big Hollywood director sends her packing, she realizes if she wants to stay in L.A., she may have to become a normal girl after all. But normal has never been in the cards for her. Strange things keep happening wherever she goes, a red-eyed shadow no one else sees is stalking her, and to top it off, she may be falling in love again, with either the bookish guy next door, or Hollywood´s hottest leading man. But everything isn´t what it seems. Someone´s keeping secrets from her. Is it her new friends at the apartment building she moved into? Or is it Ryan Everheart, the actor who wants to sweep her off her feet? And why are her feet suddenly floating off the ground? It´s enough to drive a girl insane. All Maxie wants to do is ride off into the sunset with her one true love and find a killer pair of Manolo Blahniks on the way. But how´s a girl supposed to focus on a love life and shopping when everywhere she turns someone or something is trying to kill her? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Janine Hegarty.
