Dark Currents: The Emperor's Edge, Book 2 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 720min
It's been three months since former enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon and the notorious assassin Sicarius thwarted kidnappers and saved the emperor's life. The problem? Nobody knows they were responsible for this good deed. Worse, they're being blamed for the entire scheme. With enforcers and bounty hunters stalking them, and the emperor nursing a personal hatred for Sicarius, it's going to be hard to earn exoneration. When Amaranthe's team discovers mutilated bodies in the city aqueducts and a mysterious illness incapacitates thousands of citizens, she and Sicarius see an opportunity to solve the mystery and prove their loyalty. But they'll have to defeat vengeful shamans, man-eating predators, and deadly mechanical constructs, all while dodging imperial soldiers who would rather kill them than accept their help. Nobody said exoneration would be easy. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Starla Huchton. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/002310/bk_acx0_002310_sample.mp3. The Trouble with Innocence , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 94min
In partnership with Texas Monthly, Michael Hall's "The Trouble with Innocence" is now available as an audio download, where the length and timeliness of a podcast meets the high-quality production of a full-length audio program. In 1978, a Texas jury found Kerry Max Cook guilty of the state's most brutal murder on record and sentenced him to death row. Cook swore that, no matter how long it took, he would prove his innocence, unearth the truth, and free himself from this sentence. Spanning decades, numerous lawyers, and meanwhile the physical and psychological abuse of prison, Cook would be prosecuted four times, only to have the veil of innocence narrowly evade him in the end. "The Trouble with Innocence" opens with the hearing that would exonerate Cook nearly 40 years after his original sentence. Exoneration, after all he had been through, was not enough for Cook, who then asked for his wrongful conviction back rather than live with this injustice. Michael Hall lays out Cook's grueling journey through the Texas justice and prison system in an attempt to answer: how could someone sabotage their own exoneration? ungekürzt. Language: English. The Big Exoneration: A Murder Mystery , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 361min
A modern-day 13-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister travel back in time to the year 1939 in an attempt to exonerate a private detective wrongly accused of murder. Temporarily staying in a building built in 1918 in downtown Los Angeles, the kids discover a skeleton key that opens the door to the offices of a long dead private detective. Entering, they step back in time to 1939, the year the private detective was executed. In an inner office, they come upon the ghost of the detective trapped in a mirror on the wall. With only two weeks before his presence disappears from the mirror, the detective pleads with the kids to uncover the real murderer and exonerate him of the crime. Taking up the challenge, the kids are hampered by the time constraint, combing for evidence through the unfamiliar bygone days of 1939 Los Angeles and confronting the motley crew of mobsters and molls who inhabit it. However, the kids are helped by the fact they are not recognized as children but as adults. Dressed in the fashions of 1939, and using the skeleton key to open doors to the past throughout Los Angeles, the kids venture out, successfully passing themselves off as gruff 1930s private detectives. With its period slang and references, this novel is an homage to noir detective mysteries of the 1930s and a literary feast for fans of hard-boiled fiction, such as that of Hammett and Chandler. Also, listeners who are familiar with the history of Los Angeles will appreciate the shout outs to Coles, the Fred Harvey House at Union Station, the Aztec Hotel on Route 66, and other local landmarks. ungekürzt.
