When test subjects participating in secret experiments begin to mysteriously die, Cyrus Cooper, the youngest recruit of the "Coalition" - a secret law enforcement organization - is assigned to prevent the program’s lead researcher from being the next victim. But there’s a catch: The 74-year-old neuroscientist, Gertrude Waterford, has flatly refused any type of protective detail.Cyrus goes undercover, taking a position as a personal assistant in order to enter the life of the brash, elderly scientist. When multiple attempts are made on her life, however, not only must Cyrus protect the headstrong lady, but he must also uncover the perpetrator of the attacks before it’s too late. His job might’ve been easier if he’d been fully briefed on the nature of Waterford’s research. After working for decades to genetically trigger different paranormal gifts in her patients, she’s made some unusually powerful and extremely dangerous enemies.Cyrus Cooper’s efforts take him from high-rise apartments to secret underground research facilities, with stops at forgotten rendition sites and forsaken mental institutions along the way. And as the threats grow in force and number, Cyrus faces a race against time and a war where all the players on the battlefield are anything but trustworthy. ungekürzt. Language: English. From the authors of the best-selling The Finest Hours comes the riveting, deeply human story of President John F. Kennedy and two U-2 pilots, Rudy Anderson and Chuck Maultsby, who risked their lives to save America during the Cuban Missile Crisis During the ominous two weeks of the Cold War's terrifying peak, two things saved humanity: the strategic wisdom of John F. Kennedy and the U-2 aerial spy program. On October 27, 1962, Kennedy, strained from back pain, sleeplessness, and days of impossible tension, was briefed about a missing spy plane. Its pilot, Chuck Maultsby, was on a surveillance mission over the North Pole, but had become disoriented and steered his plane into Soviet airspace. If detected, its presence there could be considered an act of war. As the president and his advisers wrestled with this information, more bad news came: another U-2 had gone missing, this one belonging to Rudy Anderson. His mission: to photograph missile sites over Cuba. For the president, any wrong move could turn the Cold War nuclear. Above and Beyond is the intimate, gripping account of the lives of these three war heroes, brought together on a day that changed history.  Selected as a "Top 10 Nonfiction Books to Read" (2018) by the MA Book Awards  ungekürzt. No espionage missions have been kept more secret than those involving American submarines. Now, Blind Man's Bluff shows for the first time how the navy sent submarines wired with self-destruct charges into the heart of Soviet seas to tap crucial underwater telephone cables. It unveils how the navy's own negligence might have been responsible for the loss of the USS Scorpion, a submarine that disappeared, all hands lost, 30 years ago. It tells the complete story of the audacious attempt to steal a Soviet submarine with the help of eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes and how it was doomed from the start. And it reveals how the navy used the comforting notion of deep-sea rescue vehicles to hide operations that were more James Bond than Jacques Cousteau. Blind Man's Bluff contains an unforgettable array of characters, including the cowboy sub commander who brazenly outraced torpedoes and couldn't resist sneaking up to within feet of unaware enemy subs. It takes us inside clandestine Washington meetings where top submarine captains briefed presidents and where the espionage war was planned one sub and one dangerous encounter at a time. Stretching from the years immediately after World War II to the operations of the Clinton administration, it is an epic story of daring and deception. A magnificent achievement in investigative reporting, it feels like a spy thriller but with one important difference: Everything in it is true. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: George Wilson. New jobs can suck....Today is Liz Adams' first day on the job as an agent of the Center for Specter Control. Established by Theodore Roosevelt in 1890, its clandestine mission is to protect the world from the stuff of myths and legends or, at the very least, cheesy movies. To say that she has a few questions would be an understatement. However, before Liz can be fully briefed by her new partner Craig Wright, alarm bells sound, indicating that the perimeter of Res-Site-Alpha has been breached. Not an escape. An incursion. How did anyone find the secret vampire reservation, and why would they break in?Answers will have to wait. First, nine unsuspecting humans must be saved from being the guests of honor at a feast for the inhabitants of Vamp Town.Perhaps, by her second day, Liz will have a better understanding of what she has gotten herself into...if she survives the night. In his debut novel, Jeff Seats has written an urban fantasy that will appeal to fans of Justin Cronin's The Passage, Chuck Hogan and Guillermo del Toro's The Strain, S.M. Stirling's A Taint in the Blood, Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Certain Dark Things, and even Jim Butcher's Storm Front.Vamp Town imagines a world in which vampires and other supernatural creatures are alive and active and have been in the world for a very long time.In 1890, the vampire race was on a rapid path to extinction. Alexei Rurik, Khan of all the families, proposed and signed a startling agreement with Theodore Roosevelt: In exchange for a haven and guaranteed supply of blood, vampires would no longer roam the night, feasting at will. For 126 years, vampires and humans have not mixed...until now. Passengers off a broken-down bus have stumbled into the reservation, known by its guardians at the Center for Specter Control (a secret government agency) as Vamp Town, and agent Craig Wright with his newly minted ungekürzt. During World War II, the United States maintained two secret interrogation camps in violation of the Geneva Convention - one just south of Washington, D.C., and the other near San Francisco. German POWs who passed through these camps briefed their fellow prisoners, warning them of turncoats who were helping the enemy - the United States - pry secrets from them. One of these turncoats, Werner Drechsler, was betrayed and murdered by those he spied on. U.S. military authorities reacted harshly to Drechsler's death, even though he was not the first captive to be assassinated by his fellow POWs. How had military intelligence been compromised? Were fanatical Nazis terrorizing their countrymen on American soil? Would Hitler take reprisals against the GIs he held if the United States did not protect the German POWs from violence and death while confined at the interrogation camps? At one of the secret camps, U.S. officials forced Drechsler's seven murderers to confess. The next problem faced by authorities was how to court-martial them when their confessions were legally invalid. Their secret trial was stage-managed to deliver death sentences while apparently complying with U.S. and international law. This presented U.S. authorities with further problems. The Geneva Convention entitled the prisoners' governments to the full facts about their crimes, trials, and sentencing. Despite escalating German complaints, the War Department adopted a policy of giving as little information as possible about any of the several POW murder trials in order to avoid releasing inconvenient facts about the Drechsler case. Unsurprisingly, the Reich began sentencing GIs to death. Gambling with American lives, the War Department stalled every German attempt to trade these men for the convicted German murderers until the war ended. Every American was saved; every German but one was hanged. The book is published by The Kent State University Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Halliburton. Imagine a place where sex is the most powerful weapon to get what you want....Beau:I was born a prince, but lately, I might as well be a prisoner. Yes, yes, I know that sounds terribly dramatic, but I feel one should be allowed that when there’s a plot to assassinate you underfoot. Or kidnap you. Both? I can’t remember. To be honest, I wasn’t paying full attention when mother briefed me. My new bodyguard is ridiculously pretty. He’s also stern, but not in a fun way. Hyper-focused in a way that manages to be both hot and tedious. With so many muscles my eyes glaze over and I lose count somewhere around his trapezoids.Kurt also claims to be uninterested, but the glances he sneaks when I’m changing proclaim that a lie. His anatomy says "Yes", but his mouth says, “We can’t, I’m straight, blah blah."Rude.Look, I’m not an idiot. I understand the gravity of the situation, but terrible people doing terrible things will always be a reality, and my crown will make me a target. I can’t stop just living my life. I don’t know how to make Kurt see that. Make him see me. Stripped bare of all these obnoxious defense mechanisms I don’t quite know how to turn off.Kurt:I thought a change of pace was just what I needed after my girlfriend cheated on me and broke my heart. But the pace it takes to keep up with the sensual, senseless, and painfully seductive crown prince requires an entirely new system of measurement.Everything about him throws my carefully ordered worldview into disarray. I try my best not to let on the effect he has on me, but his desire for me far outstrips my desire to resist him.But it only takes one moment of weakness to ignite a conflict that has him running from my arms right into the grasping hands of his enemies.I have to get him back. I have to make sure he’s safe. And I have to figure out if I’m really kicking myself for giving in at all...or just for driving him away afterward ungekürzt. Language: English.
