  Winnie's Song is 13 literary- and life-inspired original songs written and performed by Christie Simmons with the help of some of Alberta's finest musicians. Authentic, evocative and richly coloured, this album is elegant acoustic folk that speaks to a life shaped by the prairie landscape and dressed in years of musical adventure and motherhood... it's lyrical Canadiana that carries a trace of Celtic and a breath of Bluegrass. Winnie's Song reflects both Christie's interest in literary arts and her deep respect for the power and hues of language. The title track captures a pivotal and visually beautiful scene in her sister Catherine Simmons Niven's award-winning novel A Fine Daughter. In it, Winnie, who is hanging laundry, is seduced by the prairie wind and a torrent of monarch butterflies blown off their migratory course. A number of other tracks, including "Let's Pour a Drink Vera", "Christmastime Waltz" and "It's Not a Secret" were written either for or about works by notable Canadian authors - including "The Underpainter", a sparingly accompanied encapsulation of Jane Urquhart's novel by the same name. Launched in May 2010, Winnie's Song was produced by Calgary-based Aaron Young (of the Polyjesters and Sillan and Young) and includes the work of other Alberta musicians who are gaining national attention (Jon May, Kodi Hutchinson, Scott Duncan...). In this production, Aaron demonstrates an uncanny ability to capture the essence of Christie's original songs. The production provides thoughtful, even-handed support and flavouring that is faithful to the authentic character of the songs. The result is music that's rich and well layered, captivating and emotionally relevant. The songs on Winnie's Song are intelligent, reflective and vivid and Christie sings them with a hauntingly fine voice - one many consider her greatest gift.
