After Pentangle split in 1973, Bert Jansch returned to his prolific solo career but missed playing in a group context. The Bert Jansch Conundrum came into existence as the 1970s waned. Jansch recorded a solo album called A Rare Conundrum in 1977, with mandolinist Rod Clements and fiddler Mike Piggott as supporting players. When Piggott was unable to go out on a Scandinavian tour, Martin Jerkins hired on to play violin on the dates. They hit it off and Nigel Portman-Smith came aboard to play bass

Hawktail is the instrumental acoustic quartet of fiddler Brittany Haas, bassist Paul Kowert, guitarist Jordan Tice, and mandolinist Dominick Leslie. Though at first glance it looks like an acoustic superpicker side-project, their all-original music is cohesive and unique, distinguishing them as an ensemble with a sound built from the ground up. Flush with orchestral sweeps and sparse vigils, with strains of the American South and the North Atlantic, this cosmopolitan sound is not what you'd expe

Mandolinist/violinist Ted Falcon hooks up with harmonica virtuoso Pablo Fagundes in a program of Brazilian and American music. Recorded in Brazil, selections include many original compositions as well as references to the great composers of both countries such as Ernesto Nazareth and David Grisman. Ted Falcon, an American, first discovered his passion for Brazilian music when he heard choro at home listening to his father playing the guitar music of Villa-Lobos. He has dedicated himself to the study of the mandolin and choro for the past 7 years, recording a Brazilian instrumental CD, Memórias do Brasil, and writing a mandolin book, Retratos do Brasil. Pablo Fagundes, a Brazilian, fell in love with the blues, an American style that has many fans in Brazil. Today he works to consolidate his instrument, the harmonica, in Brazilian music, developing research and giving lessons in the Escola de Choro Raphael Rabello in Brasilia. In Brazil, Pablo performs with Pé de Cerrado, a group dedicated to various styles of Brazilian regional music, as well as with the Quarteto Camará, a group that explores Brazilian music, jazz and blues. He has also played with the Brazilian All Stars Blues band, opening for B.B. King, and recently at the Mandolin Symposium in California, played with David Grisman and Mike Marshall.

20th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF AUSTRALIAN COMPOSERS JADCD 1119 An anthology of works by Australian composers in a wide range of styles and musical groupings ranging from saxophone quartet, mandolin ensemble through, a trio for piccolo, guitar & cello to works for solo mandolin and solo piano. Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 - ERIC GROSS (b.1926) SUITE LATIN AMERICAN op.302 (2008) for multi-instrumentalist Saxophone Quartet. The TANGO CONCERTANTE, completed in 2007 received a very enthusiastic reception by the members of the Fo(u)r Fans - Saxophone Quartet to whom this Suite is dedicated. It was therefore decided to create a suite of movements in a Latin American style. The title of each movement indicates the style, mood and rhythmic provenance of the musical content, with the BALADA providing a calm and gentle contrast to the other, livelier movements. Because of the versatility of the instrumentalists for whom the suite has been composed, the composer succumbed to the temptation to provide additional variety of timbre by utilising also instruments other than the various saxophones, which the members of this ensemble play so expertly. Track 1 - Tango Concertante Track 2 - Rumbaphonics Track 3 - Balada Track 4 - Samba This Suite was recorded privately in Weimar, Germany in 2008 and the fifth movement, "Hatdance" will be recorded in due course. The members of the Fo(u)r Fans- Saxophone Quartet are: • Ruediger Trosits-Sopr.Sax/Flute/Bb Clt. • Berndt Klinke-Alto Sax/Sopr.Sax/Flt/Picc./Bb Clt./B'Clt. • Holger Arndt-Ten.Sax/Eb Clt./ B'Clt. • Jens Kaiser-Baritone Sax/Bb Clt. Track 5 - PIANGO CONCERTANTE op.302/A (2008) This is an arrangement and adaption for solo piano of the Tango Concertante op.302/1. Because of the enthusiastic reception given to the tango the composer decided to create this idiomatic arrangement for that great supporter of Australian music, the Australian pianist Sally Mays, utilising her great musicianship and technical prowess to the fullest. This private recording was made in London in August 2008. Sound Engineer Bas Kelleher. Track 6 - PREMARCH AND POSTWAR (VORMÅRZ UND NACHKRIEG) op.307 A brief tone-poem for piano, based upon the poem of the same title by the German poet MICHAEL KIRMES-SEITZ, and gives expression to the disasters and havoc created in Germany by the political events of that period. The music pictures and contrasts the exaggerated and false hopes raised and the inevitable horrendous consequences by the end of World War II. This composition was written especially for the outstanding pianist and pedagogue, Idil Ugur who resides in Weimar where this private recording was made in August 2008. E.G. Track 7 - PETER SCULTHORPE (b.1929) A SUN SONG FOR ERIC (1991) This short piece of music was written by the composer to be included in a GARLAND of pieces written by various composers for Eric Gross on his retirement from Sydney University in 1991. Track 8 - ANN CARR-BOYD (b.1938) FANDANGO (1982) FANDANGO, written in 1982 for Adrian Hooper and the Sydney Mandolins, is a lyrical bluesy type of work and has proved to be this composer's most popular piece of music along with her MUSIC FOR AN IMAGINARY ITALIAN FILM, also written for Adrian Hooper and the Sydney Mandolins. Track 9 - BETTY BEATH (b.1942) contrasts (1983) This is one of the many miniature masterpieces of Betty Beath's composed in 1983. Played by the composer at the piano. Tracks 10, 11 & 12 - ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) Track 10 - NIGHTFALL ON SYDNEY HARBOUR (2006) This composition describes an impressionistic landscape of Sydney Harbour at dusk. Track 12 - PRELUDE AMETHYST AND JADE (2008) Prelude Amethyst and Jade describes in harmony and melody the characteristics of these gems. Tracks 10, 11 and 12 recorded 12/9/2008 by Kerry Joyner at 2MBSFM Studio C. Track 13 - RAY LEMOND (b.1956) NORDLAND (2008) The upper part of Norway is known as Nordland and is home to the spectacular Norwegian fjords. The music tries to capture a slice of the majesty and tranquility of this natural wonder. Recorded on Arcadia 24/8/2008 by Matt James. Track 14 - ROBERT ALLWORTH (b.1943) FALLING LEAVES OF RED AND GOLD (2008) FALLING LEAVES OF RED AND GOLD was written for mandolinist MICHAEL HOOPER in July 2008. Track 15 - DEREK STRAHAN (b.1935) AT BONDI-SURF & RIPS (1963) Rondo for Piccolo, Guitar & 'Cello (1963, revised 2008) - Trio Nuovo Musicale New Music Group Players. My home in 1963 was a flat in a crumbling block at the south end of Bondi Beach renting at $8 per week which had a millionaire's view looking north along the surf, and which has since been replaced by expensive apartments. I body-surfed every day, rediscovering a beach life last experienced at age 10 in 1945 in Perth, WA, before being relocated to the UK by my family, from whence I fled in 1962 returning to Australia. This Rondo is one of a dozen or so music works I wrote in that year, and seems to have been a visceral and combative depiction of swimming in the surf in rough conditions, with conflicting currents above and below amid the constant excitement of waves rolling in. I have changed little of the structure and themes of the original score but have added detail to enhance texture, maintain motivic impulse and provide a more climactic Coda. This is the first of three pieces making up a Suite "At Bondi". 'Surf & Rips' heard here, then "Millpond" and "Perfect Day" which follow with the flute taking the woodwind role. Recording, Revolve Pty. Ltd., 28/01/08 This compact disc celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the first compact disc issued on the JADE label through BROAD MUSIC. This compilation represents 20 years of production of Australian music on JADE RECORDS. A special tribute is made to Dr. Eric Gross AM for his encouragement of Australian music during his tenure as Associate professor of Music at the University of Sydney and also as a supporter throughout the 20 years of the JADE series of Australian music. Some of his most engaging music is heard on this disc. The 20th year of production and also the 103rd disc in this series. Compilation mastered by Steve Smart Studios 301. Daniel Akiva is a composer, performer, and educator whose performances on guitar and lute have won great acclaim. A native of Haifa whose family has lived in Israel for over five hundred years, he was steeped in the Sephardic tradition from his youth. Much of his compositional output has been devoted to works that grow out of the music of the Sephardic Jews. Mr. Akiva has appeared in concert as a guitarist and lutist in Israel, Spain, Switzerland, France, Germany, Portugal, the United States, Mexico, and in most of the countries of Central and South America. In 1984 he accompanied the soprano Victoria de los Angeles in a series of concerts at the prestigious Israel Festival. His repertoire includes works from the Renaissance through the 21th century. Daniel Akiva's output includes works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, choir, voice and guitar, piano, and chamber orchestra. In 1990 his work Mizmorim (Psalms) for guitar solo was awarded the ACUM prize for composition. He has also written music for films including the eight-part television series 'Jerusalem That Was in Spain,' which was broadcast in five languages throughout the world. His work Siniza i fumo (Smoke and Ashes), for mezzo-soprano, recorder, flute, narrator, children's choir, guitar, and orchestra, composed in memory of the Jews of Salonika who perished in the Holocaust, was premiered in 1997 in Jerusalem, and was performed several times in the United States in May, 2000. His string quartet Ciclos was awarded the ACUM prize for composition in 2002. In 2006, he received the Amazon Prize for his disc 'Hope.' Mr. Akiva is a graduate of the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, and completed his studies at the Geneva Conservatorium in Switzerland. He currently heads the Music Department at the WIZO High School for the Arts in Haifa, which he founded in 1986, and has been the Artistic Director of the Guitar Gems Festival since 2006. 'Malchut' for voice and guitar, is a setting of a poem by Rivka Miriam 'Four Prayers' for mandolin and guitar consists of four miniature movements and was written in 2001 by invitation of the mandolinist Avi Avital, and dedicated to him and to the guitar and lute artist Bari Moscovitz. The composition describes different spiritual states as expressed through prayer, moving from contemplation to joy and from meditation to dancing. The trio 'Selichot' was inspired by the penitential poems of the Sephardic Jews for the High Holidays. The composition is a series of dialogues between the three instruments. The dialogues include confrontation, reconciliation, and agreement, three traits of human behavior. The first movement begins with solo oboe which introduces the first theme. The second theme is introduced by the cello, and is based upon the Neilah prayer which concludes Yom Kippur. The second movement begins with a meditative motive played by the guitar and based upon the melody of the poem 'As a servant longs' by the medieval poet Solomon ibn Gabirol. The melody is introduced later by the oboe. In the third movement, 'The year has ended with it's curses,' expresses reconciliation and agreement, and is based upon the melody of the poem whose name it bears. Towards the end of the movement, the Neilah motive of the first movement returns as the motive for the blessing which concludes the work. The song cycle 'Sarina kanta' (Sarina sings) is sung in Ladino and was inspired by Sephardic folk songs.Various folk songs are quoted in the work. The first movement, 'Dia y noche' ('Day and Night') is based upon a cantiga (lyric love song). The second movement is a fantasia based on a poem by Avner Perez, 'Sarina kanta romansas,' ('Sarina sings romances'). Sarina is Perez's grandmother, whose memory is recalled in this cycle of poems. The third movement was originally a romance of the Sephardic Jews from Turkey, 'Una matika de ruda' ('A spring of Rue'), which over time turned into a cantiga. The fourth movement, 'Ya abasha la novia' ('The Bride is Coming Down'), is a humorous wedding song. The fifth movement is a lulluby with a violin obligato part. The cycle concludes with 'Ya salio de la mar' ('Here She Comes from the Sea'), a wedding song. '6 Preludes' selected from the First and Second Books by Claude Debussy were arranged by Daniel Akiva for the combination of oboe, cello and guitar in order to provide color and give expression to the composer's Impressionistic thought through the independent use of color.

The 2001 album (their fifth together) from trail-blazing Irish harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001, and English virtuoso guitarist Chris Newman. Agallaimh means "discourses" or "dialogues" in Irish. These multi-lingual musical conversations represented an exciting artistic departure for Máire & Chris. From the purest well-spring of Irish music come the 17th century air Gol na mBan san Ár, an exemplar of the stark beauty of the ancient Irish harp tradition, the delightfully melodic newly-discovered 18th century Hidden Pearl arranged by Máire for harp and string quartet and an elaborate set of jigs. Two of the four songs are recorded here for the first time in these versions. One of them, the haunting An Clár Bog Déil, is sung in the free-form, uniquely Irish style of singing known as sean-nós. The Scottish tradition is represented by the dazzlingly virtuosic Beeswing Hornpipe and the driving Highland piping tunes Donald MacLean's Farewell to Oban & Duntroon Castle. From this traditional core, they explore new musical styles and approaches to arrangement. Three Piece Suite, composed by Máire in a traditional style, ends up with a slightly African sound. Other full band arrangements include the irresistably jaunty bluegrass tune Twinkle Little Star and Chris's two compositions, the jazzy Swinging the Lead and the effervescent, Caribbean-influenced Banana Yellow. Special guests: Máire's fiddle-playing sister Nollaig Casey, young Scottish fiddler Ian MacFarlane, mandolinist Simon Mayor, percussionist Roy Dodds and cellist Liz Hanks. REVIEW EXTRACTS... "Lively dance tunes, lovely songs, classic Irish harp music and general purpose fun. Máire, who invented the playing of Irish dance music on the harp, is in fine form and her singing is clear and strong as the wind. Chris is one of the most versatile and just plain fun guitarists around..." Dirty Linen (USA) "This virtuoso duo test the limits of Irish music with touches of calypso, bluegrass and 40s-style swing. Newman's hot guitar licks and Ní Chathasaigh's bell-toned harp are delights" Sing Out (USA) "Sparkling virtuosity and incredible tightness... a rich and breathtaking album" Taplas (Wales) "Perfectly played: exudes warmth, passion and pleasure. The apogee of instrumental music: truly wonderful" Tykes News (England) "Littered with gems: the playing is so good it should be outlawed!" Folk London (England) "Wie immer mit augenzwinkernden Wendungen perfekt gespielt und glasklar gemixt." - FOLKER (Germany) März/April, 2002 "Terrific: brilliant, beautiful, virtuosic ****" The Sunday Tribune (Ireland) BIOGRAPHY... 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the partnership of England's premier flatpicking guitarist, Chris Newman, and brilliant, innovative harper Máire Ní Chathasaigh (pronounced Moira Nee Ha-ha-sig), Irish Traditional Musician of the Year 2001. Since their début at the 1987 Cambridge Folk Festival, they've toured twenty-one countries with their signature cocktail of dynamic Irish dance-music, moving airs, evocative songs and striking new compositions - spiced with shots of hot jazz and bluegrass as well as Chris's "subversively witty introductions". They released their sixth CD, FireWire, in 2007: "An eclecticism and spirit of adventure that is quite thrilling... Virtuoso playing... bewitching string fantasies and a wonderfully clear and expressive voice' The Times 'Maire Ni Chathasaigh is in a class of her own' The Guardian 'Takes one of the most effete instruments in traditional music by the scruff of the neck and breathes a fire into it's belly' The Irish Times "Brilliant, innovative harping and guitar-playing of astonishing virtuosity and versatility" Songlines "Dazzling virtuosity... Newman's guitar-playing is to be marvelled at... exquisitely delivered... delightful" The Daily Telegraph. It was Chicago-based Live Ireland's Album of the Year. This summer they came together with two of the most important names in Irish music, legendary guitarist Arty McGlynn (ex Van Morrison band, Planxty, Patrick Street, De Danann...) and Máire's sister, virtuoso fiddler Nollaig Casey (ex Planxty), to record a stunning new CD, Heartstring Sessions, which was released in time for an eighteen-date October tour of the UK and Ireland. The CD has just become available on CD Baby! Within the past couple of years Chris and Máire have performed in the USA, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, Austria, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Ireland and the UK, additionally, Máire gave a 16-date nationwide lecture tour of the USA in April 2006 and prestigious solo recitals at the 2007 European Harp Symposium and the 2005 World Harp Congress. Broadcasts included a November 2007 concert televised by the Irish-language TG4 TV, a Christmas 2005 concert in Brindisi, televised by Rai Uno, the Italian state broadcaster, and appearances on Lyric FM, Ireland's premier classical music station (for which Máire was Artist of the Week) and BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. They're featured on Irish rock legend Rory Gallagher's posthumous album Wheels within Wheels (BMG, 2003) and Polygram USA's major 1998 Celtic harp album and associated PBS TV special Celtic Harpestry. Máire is harp/voice soloist with the New English Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of New College Oxford on John Cameron's Missa Celtica (Erato Disques, Paris). The Goldcrest film Driftwood features her singing, and her harping and compositions feature with other Celtic music luminaries on Dan ar Braz's Gold Disc-awarded album Finisterres (Sony France). Máire is 'the greatest Celtic harper of our age' (Live Ireland), in 2001 receiving Irish music's most prestigious award, that of Traditional Musician of the Year - Gradam Cheoil TG4 - 'for the excellence and pioneering force of her music, the remarkable growth she has brought to the music of the harp and for the positive influence she has had on the young generation of harpers'. She began to play the harp at the age of eleven. A West Cork background steeped in the oral tradition led her, while still a teenager, to develop new techniques that made it possible for the first time to play traditional music on the harp in a stylistically accurate way. She won the All-Ireland and Pan-Celtic Harp Competitions several times and in 1985 recorded the first harp album ever to concentrate on traditional Irish dance music, The New-Strung Harp - 'an intensely passionate and intelligent record and a milestone in Irish harp music' (The Irish Examiner). Her approach has been profoundly influential wherever in the world lever harps are played - "a single-handed reinvention of the harp". Two volumes of her arrangements have been published: The Irish Harper Vols. I and II. She contributed two articles about the Irish harp and modes in Irish music to the Companion to Irish Traditional Music (Cork University Press) and is profiled in Celtic Women in Music (Quarry Books, Canada) 'Her work restores the harp to it's true voice.' (The Irish Times) Chris began to play guitar at the age of four and at fourteen played his first paid gig in a folk club. He dabbled in the jazz scene in his late teens, playing with and learning from people like Stephane Grappelli and Diz Disley and honing his skills as a gifted improviser. After a brief foray into the commercial world that resulted in a silver disc for producing The Oldest Swinger in Town, he resolved to concentrate on his first love - the acoustic guitar. In addition to his work with Máire, Chris toured until 1997 as a member of Boys of the Lough in North America, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia, Denmark, China and Italy. A prolific composer, arranger and record producer, he has been principal guitar tutor for Newcastle University's Folk B.Mus. Degree course since it's inception. His book of guitar compositions and arrangements Adventures with a Flatpick was published in 2001. His 1998 solo CD Fretwork was "a stunning and stylistically-varied album, h
