Carla Brook-Parks, a Bostonian aristocrat, falls in love with a young policeman and becomes involved with social work. She loses her eyesight while saving three young children from their drug-infested parents. A car wreck occurs in which a man dies, leaving his eyes as a donor. A doctor friend of Carla, in her same social status, convinces a brilliant ophthalmologist to let her have the man's eyes and do the transplant so she may regain her vision. Drugs are prevalent, and the police are under duress to find the trafficking inside their city. Her transplanted eyes keep seeing the last of what the donor saw before he was killed. This leads Carla, working with Pete, into intriguing mysteries and murders. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Cassie Fields. Most cataract surgery patients are optimistic and for good reason. I have personally performed thousands of cataract surgeries in my career, including members of my own family, and the majority of those operations were qualitatively successful. And because of the success rate of such surgeries, many prospective patients expect perfect vision restored with little or no recovery time. And more often than not, this is the ultimate result. But, as with any surgery, there are potential complications. Cataract surgery has risk and can result in increased dry eye, irritation, pain, diminished focus, unexpected recovery issues, inflammation, and even loss of vision are possible. And that is the reason I am writing this book: to advise and educate prospective patients in their decision to undergo cataract surgery and improve their understanding of the overall risks and rewards of such surgery. Over the past 15 years as an ophthalmologist, I have witnessed firsthand the life-changing results of cataract surgery and experienced with my patients the true joy that accompanies better and more useful vision. In this audiobook I will be sharing not only my expertise based on education, training, and experience, along with objective and empirical evidence, but also my subjective opinions as well. And those opinions may very well differ from the opinions of other medical experts in my field. And that’s okay. Just as every eye is different, the perspective through which we observe is equally different, unique, and subjective. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Duke Holm. New York Times best-selling author Robin Cook returns with another ripped-from-the-headlines medical thriller, where DNA science, biotechnology, and religion collide. It's been more than thirty years since New York City medical examiner Jack Stapleton's college graduation and almost as long since he'd been in touch with former classmates Shawn Doherty and Kevin Murray. Once a highly regarded ophthalmologist, Jack's career took a dramatic turn after a tragic accident that destroyed his family. But that, too, is very much in the past: Jack has remarried - to longtime colleague and fellow medical examiner Laurie Montgomery - and is the father of a young child. But his renegade, activist personality can't rest, and after performing a postmortem on a young college student who had recently been treated by a chiropractor, Jack decides to explore alternative medicine. What makes some people step outside the medical establishment to seek care from practitioners of Eastern philosophies and even faith healers? Jack's classmate Shawn Doherty is now a renowned archeologist and biblical scholar at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, whose taste for good wine and generally deteriorating health are taking a toll on his career. He has recently obtained permission for a final dig beneath Saint Peter's, and despite his long-standing grudge against the Catholic Church, begins his research - which eventually takes him to Jerusalem and Venice - only to make a startling discovery with ecclesiastical and medical implications. And when Kevin Murray, now Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York, gets wind of Shawn's findings, he's desperate to keep them from the public. Kevin has strong political ambitions within the Church, but his association with Shawn threatens to undermine them. Kevin turns to his old friend Jack to help protect an explosive secret - one with the power to change lives forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: George Guidall. All four of Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary Sherlock Holmes novels, collected in a unique Graphic Deluxe edition with an introduction by Michael DirdaIn 1886, an unsuccessful ophthalmologist on the southern coast of England decided to try his hand at writing a detective story. Unlike his historical romances, which required the utmost care, this could be dashed off quickly. The first draft, featuring a Mr. Sherrinford Holmes, was a bit rough around the edges, but with a little revision, something astonishing emerged: Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and A Study in Scarlet. As if with no warning, they sprung forth from their creator's head, fully-formed in a new style so well-defined it felt immediately like an established genre. Their partnership cemented within pages of the book's opening-the sum of their parts accomplishing far more than they could apart. Sporting his signature billowing coat and pipe in hand, the genius investigator Holmes captivated readers with his alluring melancholy and superhuman intuition, while Watson remained ever the perfect foil, a classic Victorian gentleman with brilliant intellect.Collected here are all four Holmes novels-A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Valley of Fear-tracing the origins of the pair up through their greatest showdowns with arch-enemy Professor Moriarty. Set in the seductive shadow-world of Victorian London, they are at once an indelible portrait of their time and immortal stories unmarred by passing time. Though endlessly reinterpreted, reinvented and imitated, they have never been surpassed: the stories of Holmes and Watson lives on as immediate and original in our time as in their own.
