Night Storm: Night Trilogy, Book 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 689min
Dear Listener, You met Alec Carrick in Night Fire. He returns full force - and believe me, this man’s got force - in Night Storm, the third novel of the Night Trilogy, which I wrote in the Fall of 1988. The Paxtons are shipbuilders in Baltimore. Alec Carrick is an English nobleman who wants to buy them out. Genny Paxton isn’t at all what she seems. She dresses like “Eugene” and wants to build her own sailing ships without male interference. Alec, a man of great insight, knows exactly what lies beneath those britches. He gets Genny’s goat more times than she can count. This is a love story filled with wit, humor, and outrageous circumstance. It’s got more unexpected spins than a roulette wheel. Then there’s five-year-old Hallie, Alec’s daughter, a charmer who will take hold of your heart and never let go. Do enjoy Alec and Genny - and let me know which of the novels in the Night Trilogy you like best. —Catherine Coulter ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Anne Flosnik. Christmas Customs of Old Whitby , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 25min
This booklet covers most of the known Christmas customs at this famous old seaport. It is based on the script of a radio program that I wrote and narrated for BBC Radio Cleveland in 1991 and it was broadcast on Christmas day of that year. Whitby was the port where Captain Cook, the famous Royal Navy explorer and navigator learnt his trade from Quaker shipbuilders and he no doubt experienced, if not participated in this book's customs as a young apprentice seaman. Whitby was (and probably still is) a town bathed in ancient superstitions, particularly those of the town's sea folk. Small wonder then that it plays such a significant part in Bram Stoker's famous Gothic horror novel Dracula. The stories about these customs were collected by me from the extensive historical records and books of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, which I was a member of, as well as face-to-face discussions I had with some of the townsfolk, in the course of my duties as The Collector of Dues for the Port of Whitby in the 1980s. ungekürzt. Voyagers of the Titanic: Passengers, Sailors, Shipbuilders, Aristocrats, and the Worlds They Came From , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 678min
Late in the night of April 14, 1912, the mighty Titanic, a passenger liner traveling from Southampton, England, to New York City, struck an iceberg four hundred miles south of Newfoundland. Its sinking over the next two and a half hours brought the ship—mythological in name and size—100 years of infamy. Of the 2,240 people aboard the ship, 1,517 perished either by drowning or by freezing to death in the frigid North Atlantic waters. What followed the disaster was tantamount to a worldwide outpouring of grief: In New York, Paris, London, and other major cities, people lined the streets and crowded around the offices of the White Star Line, the Titanic’s shipping company, to inquire for news of their loved ones and for details about the lives of some of the famous people of their time. While many accounts of the Titanic’s voyage focus on the technical or mechanical aspects of why the ship sank, Voyagers of the Titanic follows the stories of the men, women, and children whose lives intersected on the vessel’s fateful last day, covering the full range of first, second, and third class—from plutocrats and captains of industry to cobblers and tailors looking for a better life in America. Richard Davenport-Hines delves into the fascinating lives of those who ate, drank, reveled, dreamed, and died aboard the mythic ship: from John Jacob Astor IV, the wealthiest person on board, whose comportment that night was subject to speculation and gossip for years after the event, to Archibald Butt, the much-beloved military aide to Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, who died helping others into the Titanic’s few lifeboats. With magnificent prose, Voyagers of the Titanic also brings to life the untold stories of the ship’s middle and third classes—clergymen, teachers, hoteliers, engineers, shopkeepers, counterjumpers, and clerks—each of whom had a story that not only illuminates the fascinating ship but also the times in which it sailed.
