The Secret Lives of Planets
'A deft, frequently dramatic tour'Nature'A wonderfully clear and readable book . . . Gives a splendid overview of our Sun's planetary system, including its history and exploration'Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell*We have the impression that the solar system is perfectly regular like a clock, or a planetarium instrument. On a short timescale it is. But, seen in a longer perspective, the planets, and their satellites, have exciting lives, full of events - for example, did you know that Saturn's moon, Titan, boasts lakes which contain liquid methane surrounded by soaring hills and valleys, exactly as the earth did before life evolved on our fragile planet? Or that Mercury is the shyest planet? Or, that Mars' biggest volcano is 100 times the size of Earth's, or that its biggest canyon is 10 times the depth of the Grand Canyon, or that it wasn't always red, but blue? The culmination of a lifetime of astronomy and wonder, Paul Murdin's enchanting new book reveals everything you ever wanted to know about the planets, their satellites, and our place in the solar system.- Shop: buecher

Geometrical Formulation of Renormalization-Group Method as an Asymptotic Analysis (eBook, PDF)
This book presents a comprehensive account of the renormalization-group (RG) method and its extension, the doublet scheme, in a geometrical point of view. It extract long timescale macroscopic/mesoscopic dynamics from microscopic equations in an intuitively understandable way rather than in a mathematically rigorous manner and introduces readers to a mathematically elementary, but useful and widely applicable technique for analyzing asymptotic solutions in mathematical models of nature. The book begins with the basic notion of the RG theory, including its connection with the separation of scales. Then it formulates the RG method as a construction method of envelopes of the naive perturbative solutions containing secular terms, and then demonstrates the formulation in various types of evolution equations. Lastly, it describes successful physical examples, such as stochastic and transport phenomena including second-order relativistic as well as nonrelativistic fluid dynamics with causality and transport phenomena in cold atoms, with extensive numerical expositions of transport coefficients and relaxation times. Requiring only an undergraduate-level understanding of physics and mathematics, the book clearly describes the notions and mathematical techniques with a wealth of examples. It is a unique and can be enlightening resource for readers who feel mystified by renormalization theory in quantum field theory.- Shop: buecher

The Half-life of Facts: Why Everything We Know Has an Expiration Date , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 474min
New insights from the science of science.... Facts change all the time. Smoking has gone from doctor recommended to deadly. We used to think the Earth was the center of the universe and that Pluto was a planet. For decades, we were convinced that the brontosaurus was a real dinosaur. In short, what we know about the world is constantly changing. But it turns out there’s an order to the state of knowledge, an explanation for how we know what we know. Samuel Arbesman is an expert in the field of scientometrics - literally the science of science. Knowledge in most fields evolves systematically and predictably, and this evolution unfolds in a fascinating way that can have a powerful impact on our lives. Doctors with a rough idea of when their knowledge is likely to expire can be better equipped to keep up with the latest research. Companies and governments that understand how long new discoveries take to develop can improve decisions about allocating resources. And by tracing how and when language changes, each of us can better bridge generational gaps in slang and dialect. Just as we know that a chunk of uranium can break down in a measurable amount of time - a radioactive half-life - so too any given field’s change in knowledge can be measured concretely. We can know when facts in aggregate are obsolete, the rate at which new facts are created, and even how facts spread. Arbesman takes us through a wide variety of fields, including those that change quickly, over the course of a few years, or over the span of centuries. He shows that much of what we know consists of “mesofacts” - facts that change at a middle timescale, often over a single human lifetime. Throughout, he offers intriguing examples about the face of knowledge: what English majors can learn from a statistical analysis of The Canterbury Tales, why it’s so hard to measure a mountain, and why so many parents still tell kids to eat their spinach because it’s rich in ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sean Pratt. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/gdan/000795/bk_gdan_000795_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.- Shop: Audible

Self-Healing Materials (eBook, ePUB)
Self-Healing Materials: Principles and Technology, Second Edition provides engineers and researchers in both industry and academia the information they need to deploy self-healing technology in a range of potential applications, from adhesives to the automotive industry, and from electronics to biomedical implants. Sections discuss the principal mechanisms of self-healing and how these are applied to the development of materials that have the ability to repair themselves, either with minimal or no human intervention. In addition, the book provides a theoretical background and a review of the major research undertaken to date, providing a thorough grounding in this concept and related technology. Other sections compare the parameters of different self-healing technological processes, such as fault detection mechanisms, methods of triggering and turning off the healing processes, the activation energy of self-healing processes, the means and methods of delivery of the healing substances to the defect locations, self-healing timescale (rate of self-healing), and the extent of self-healing (healing efficiency, recovery of properties, etc.). In addition, mathematical modeling of the processes of self-healing (molecular dynamics simulation), the morphology of healed areas, and other important topics are thoroughly discussed. Helps materials scientists and engineers reduce risk of degradation and materials failure by using self-healing materials in a range of applications Provides real-world application examples so practitioners can assess the applicability and usefulness of self-healing materials in their work Includes guidance on the efficiency and efficacy of self-healing mechanisms, with coverage of different parameters considered and methodologies used Discusses typical aids and additives in self-healing materials, including plasticizers, catalysts, shape-memory components, and more- Shop: buecher

THE BLOCKCHAIN FUTURE 2022
Over recent years, cryptocurrency has generated more headlines than any other phenomenon in the world of finance. It has achieved things that no other investment mechanism has ever achieved, in a timescale that is barely believable. And it has resonated with a new generation of Internet-savvy entrepreneurs and consumers, who almost intrinsically understand its particular qualities and advantages. Yet as important as cryptocurrency has been in liberalizing finance and currency, the most important revolution in this sphere is still to occur. This is due to technology that has always underpinned cryptocurrency, without ever attracting the frenzied attention associated with the express escalation in the value of Bitcoin. The blockchain is the technology that makes cryptocurrency possible. It is an incredible innovation that makes it possible to compile huge registers of transactions, which can not only be updated in real-time, but also retain the privacy of those transactions indefinitely. The blockchain guarantees equality, granting all participants within a system equal access, while also ensuring that the vandalism of the system underlying the blockchain is impossible. This is no mean feat. It is something that has only become conceivable due to the paradigm shift that has occurred via what is sometimes described as the Technological Age. This whirlwind has swept up each and every one of us, at least in the Western world, in recent years. The unstoppable force created by technology can be exciting; offering a wealth of new opportunities and experiences. And it can be inspirational; enticing us with the possibility of exploring new frontiers and solving epoch-defining problems. But, perhaps above all else, it can be difficult to understand and keep up! The world revolves at a lightning pace nowadays, and the breakneck speed of change means that grasping the latest zeitgeist can be challenging. Technological development has been a fundamental part of human society since the first industrial revolution, but this change has certainly accelerated in the 21st century- Shop: buecher
