    Der Pianist und dreifache Grammy-Gewinner Ramsey Lewis gehört mit seinen Stücken "The In Crowd", "Hang On Sloopy" und "Wade In The Water" zu den wenigen Jazz Musikern, die Pop-Hits landen konnten. 1930 in Chicago geboren, lernte er schon im Alter von vier Jahren Klavier zu spielen und begann seine Karriere als Fünfzehnjähriger in der Band "The Cleffs". Sein Werdegang erinnert in vielem dem seines nur fünf Jahre älteren Kollegen Ahmad Jamal, der seit 1950 in Chicago begonnen hatte sich einen Namen zu machen und sich ganz früh auf sein eigenes Trio stützte, anstatt in vielen Bands den Klavierstuhl zu besetzen. Dementsprechend gibt es von beiden Musikern nur sehr wenige Aufnahmen als Sideman. Aus den "Cleffs" spaltete sich Lewis erstes Trio ab mit Isaac "Redd" Holt am Schlagzeug und Eldee Young am Bass, das bis 1966 zusammenbleiben sollte. Gleich mit ihrem Debüt "Ramsey Lewis and his Gentle-men of Swing" hatten sie ihre Erfolgsformel gefunden und die bestand in einem bodenständigeren Ansatz mit starken Blues und Soul Elementen im Gegensatz zum intellektuelleren Ahmad Jamal. Gelegentlich wurde das Trio von Streichern und Bläsern unterstützt, um die kontinuierliche Plattenproduktion des Trios abwechslungsreicher zu gestalten. Aber auch die wenigen Sideman-Aufnahmen von Lewis zeigen, dass er ein großes Talent am Klavier war, egal in welchem Kontext. Mit dem Vibraphonisten Lem Winchester gab es einen interessanten Sound-Vergleich zum Modern Jazz Quartet in der gleichen Besetzung. Auch die sehr rare Aufnahme im Projekt des Ellington-Bassisten Jimmy Woode ist ein echtes Juwel. Dass die Sängerin Lorez Alexandria den großen Durchbruch nie schaffte, bleibt ein ewiges Rätsel, denn ihre Produktion mit Ramsey Lewis kann man heute noch mit großer Freude anhören. Als versierter Hardbop-Pianist glänzt Lewis in der hochkarätig besetzten Band von Schlagzeug-Gigant Max Roach. Auch wenn sich Lewis später seine Musik kommerzieller ausrichtete, genießt er heute noch eine große Popularität, auch als Radio Moderator.
