Heaven on Earth
I wrote and performed all of the songs on this CD. My daughter, Emily, sings on Bay-o and Heaven on Earth. My friend Geoff Schultz plays drums on Bay-O and Steady Walkin. I play mostly acoustic, electric and bass guitars on the tracks, but also mixed in some mandolin, harmonica, autoharp, kayagum, hammered dulcimer, ukulele, and various percussion instruments. Heaven on Earth for example is ukulele, bass and percussion for the music tracks. The CD was recorded in my modest basement studio with a small digital recording machine. All of the lyrics are G rated, so not to worry around young or sensitive ears. Thanks for listening, Peace, Robby.- Shop: odax

Jane Curtis Plays Zither Music from Vienna
If you already know and love Viennese music and the sound of the zither, or if you need an introduction to this wonderful kind of music, Jane Curtis's Zither Music from Vienna is for you. There are even three short video segments with close-up views of her hands showing how the instrument is played. Bring up the video by inserting the CD into a computer, clicking the CD drive to see the contents, and double-clicking a title. This is a great collection of Viennese music from Mozart to Karas, old styles and new, including classical, popular, and folk, all her own arrangements except for Karas's original Café Mozart Waltz from The Third Man. Jane Curtis has been involved with the zither for a long time, as performer, arranger, composer, teacher, and author. You may also have heard her background music on the Great Chefs television series. Her repertoire covers many forms and styles, many times and nationalities. As a former resident and frequent visitor in Austria and Germany, and with an Austrian grandmother, she is specially attuned to Viennese and other Austrian music. In describing her playing, reviewers and listeners on both sides of the Atlantic speak of it's beauty, liveliness, technical precision, and feeling for the music. The zither heard on this CD is the true European zither, very different from the autoharp, the koto, and various other stringed instruments sometimes referred to generically as zithers. This instrument originated over two hundred years ago in the German-speaking alpine regions of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. It began as a rudimentary device with three strings over a diatonic fretboard and (at first) only one open string acting as a drone accompaniment. From this modest beginning it has evolved into the fine instrument of today. The zither consists of a flat sounding-box with five strings over a fretboard along one side and an additional 24 to 42 strings stretched over the sounding-box, played open. Playing the zither is thus playing two instruments at the same time, making it the most difficult of all instruments to learn. The tones from the fretboard strings are clear and bright, while the open strings produce softly resonant tones, more like those of the harp. The combination of these two types of tone gives the zither it's unique sound, and the direct touch of the fingers on the strings enhances the quality of tone. Once you can play the zither (it takes at least a few months to play even simple music), it lends itself to many types and styles of music. It is especially suited to modulation and can provide great tonal and harmonic variety through such techniques as harmonics, metallico (striking close to the bridge), and pizzicato (the only time a zither is plucked, as distinct from the firm pulling motion required to make the strings sound). The zither heard on Zither Music from Vienna was made at the master workshop of Horst Wünsche, Markneukirchen, Germany, and recorded acoustically to preserve the true zither sound.- Shop: odax

Islas
Ian's desire here was the creation of contemporary yet tuneful chamber music, with most of the tracks written with Kyle Horch (saxophones) Guillem Calvo (violin) and Pavel Timofjevsy (piano) in mind. Woven into the violin sonata are themes, harmony and phrasing with a provenance in Celtic and psychedelic music. It's composed in a traditional 19th Century style with much use of rubato and flexible tempos. The delays often found in electronic music can be heard in Astral Hurdy-Gurdy. In Limes Groves the piano imitates the Autoharp (prominent in Bluegrass music), with each instrument providing a pulsing part somewhere in the textures. The title track Islas (Spanish for Islands - with Ian enjoying Spain and Malta when he can escape London) is influenced by ambient/new age music. The piano creates a dreamy texture over which the soprano sax plays long melodic lines. As well as composing music ranging from classical and jazz to electronica and new wave - Ian plays keyboards, trombone and bass guitar - alongside new instruments like turntables and laptops. His classical saxophone compositions have been played by Saxploitation and John Harle with the Brodsky Quartet. Ian has always had a passion for unconventional instrumentations - his first album San Gejtanu on the Music Chamber label featured Kyle Horch alongside an octet of violins and violas.- Shop: odax

Alternative Blueprint 1 / Various
Alternative Blueprint is a new U.K. label leaning towards the outer leftfield of electronica. This CD showcases our 4 artists - Minimal Pig, Automated Acoustics, Optikatechniqua & Amor Veneris, and gives a taste of things to come... We are committed to the freshest sounding electronic & acoustic music hybrids. We specialise in rare & unusual instruments, subtle synth programming & unique rhythms. Our artists are doing something different, and are hard to categorise, as all the best music is. Check them out individually for the full picture of the Alternative Blueprint sound. Profile of our current artists:. Minimal Pig: Deep electronica with a selection of weird instruments played live & the occasional vocal tune, always with fresh beats to spin your head round. Seriously high saturated Phat content, so those with a weak heart should get doctor's advice before listening. He concentrates on progressing his tunes, to make electronic music that's cerebrally appealing. Equally at home on the dancefloor or laid-out on the sofa. He is in his early 20's, from the middle of nowhere, he plays loads & loads of instruments, is a self confessed music technology & recording geek, and has made about a zillion tunes. He is constantly striving to create fresh sounds, e.g. complex routing arrangements, hanging loads of pan lids from his shed roof, taking a snare drum out & stomping on the floor for the bass drum, taking an old remote answerphone bleeper & short-circuiting it with knives & forks after soldering an amp with distortion onto it. Etc. Etc. Optikatechniqua: Originally from Barbados, with the hard dub influence in full effect, now living in the South-West UK, Optikatechniqua takes ragga, electro & jungle, breeds them together & then scares the crap out of the resulting sprog! This is dark, mutant, fast, heavy music that is genuinely unique. This stuff never fails to get the dancehall itching. True story - Optikatechniqua was playing a 4 hour set in a basement club underneath a certain branch of The Body Shop, he was playing with his own rig he'd brought in. The next day there was a complaint from the manager of the Body Shop, as the bass had knocked loads of bottles off the shelves & they'd had tons of stock smashed! Result! If you want to drop THE tunes that make the dancefloor go utterly mental, then Optikatechniqua is the way to do it. Automated Acoustics: Automated Acoustics is a bit of a departure from the usual Alternative Blueprint sound, but we loved it so much when we heard it that we had to grab him. He plays about 12 instruments, including some really obscure African ones, & records the some of the most beautifully poignant, unique music we've ever heard. He loves broken, old instruments with character. His Auto-harp has a nest of spider's webs inside the soundbox - any instrument that was once used as a home for some beast must have massive karma attached. His cello is priceless to him, but only cost £35 (it's that beaten up) but it means that he can do things to it that would give Yo Yo Ma nightmares & need counselling. When I was playing it around to test the waters, 5 people independently said 'sounds like Voodoo',and they were right - it is positive voodoo. Mainly instrumental, but sometimes with Intelligent lyrics, sung with the deepest voice you've heard in a long time, jazzy brush stick drums, cello, autoharp, Mbira, organ, piano, guitar, subtle synthesizers & home-made percussion complete the unique sound. Amor Veneris: Amor Veneris is apparently Latin for the Vagina. This sums up the sound nicely - warm, delicate but powerful with an unexplainable beauty that surrounds you & leaves you wanting more. A lush blend of dripping electronica, saucy live instruments, blistering beats & natural sounds recorded on location. E.G. Amor Veneris once carried an entire drum kit & mobile recording unit down a slippery railway embankment in the middle of winter & (allegedly) broke into a disused British Rail tunnel to record subterranean drums & vocal sounds. He has also done a tune composed mainly of the varied sounds of snow, and another one using only sounds from his favourite woods ( including the animals, of course). We are actively discouraging psychiatric assessment.- Shop: odax
