Trench is a self-educated New York City Central Park Carriage Coachman, whose twin son and daughter feed “Mr. Bo Jangles” slices of “Carrots and Apples". Through unusual interactions, Trench’s relationships with characters from the social elite to the oddest of city denizen; to include a successful businesswoman, emotionally challenged war veteran, rollerblade delivery man and librarian, coincide as he takes a journey amid love, injustice, tragedy, and recovery.Carrots & Apples reflects the effects of contemporary controversial social norms in a uniquely beautiful poetic style of writing, of imagery and substance, yet synchronously uses raw dialog that exposes the harsh realities of society. While the story encompasses a variety of social attitudes toward dating, romance, friendships, and parenting; the underlying thread that drives the story is the struggle of upright, disenfranchised men and children within a bias, corrupt, custodial legal system, and an indifferent public. ungekürzt. An uncompromising wake-up call. Joy White tells uncomfortable truths and blows apart our understanding of racism, crime, and policing in our inner cities.Since the 1980s, austerity, gentrification, and structural racism have wreaked havoc on inner-city communities, widening inequality and entrenching poverty. In Terraformed, Joy White offers an insiders view of Forest Gate - an urban neighborhood in London - analyzing how these issues affect the Black youth of today. Connecting the dots between music, politics and the built environment, it centers on the lived experiences of Black youth who have had it all: huge student debt, invisible homelessness, custodial sentences, electronic tagging, surveillance, arrest, police brutality, issues with health and well-being, and, of course, loss.Part ethnography, part memoir, Terraformed uses the history of Newham as an example of inner-city life across the globe and considers how Young black lives are affected by racism, capitalism, and austerity. ungekürzt. Once every 10,000 years, the walls between worlds grow thin. The stars align, and Hell is close. It is the time of the Sha'Daa. The hordes of Hell are about to ride out upon mankind; the forces of evil are trembling with eagerness at the doors of our dimension.Oh, wait a minute.... Actually, they’re not all eager. Some have become members of the Elks, or are involved with a fun crowd at the local high school (though, granted, they’re drinking the cheerleaders’ blood. Not enough to do any real harm). Others are tied up doing custodial work with incredibly annoying chipper young assistants. And there’s a blood diamond mine in Africa that’s perfectly hellish enough without demons getting into the act. Aliens and time travelers are frantically trying to get out of Dodge, not least by buying help at a certain centuries-old Afro-Celtic swap and barter shop in Ireland. And the mysterious master of the deal, Johnny the Salesman - what’s his part in all this? Sha’Daa Pawns offers up to 19 terrifying tales of the coming apocalypse written by some of today’s most daring authors: C.J. Henderson, Michael H. Hanson, Edward F. McKeown, John Manning, Arthur Sanchez, Jeff Barnes, Sarah Wagner, Diane Arrelle, Gustavo Bondoni, Leona Wisoker, Michael D. Griffiths, Paul Barrett, Richard Groller, Mallory Makepeace, Bruce Durham, Jamie K. Schmidt, Larry Atchley Jr., Jason Cordova, and Deborah Koren. ungekürzt. Language: English. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy delivered an historic speech on mental illness and retardation. He described sweeping new programs to replace "the shabby treatment of the many millions of the mentally disabled in custodial institutions" with treatment in community mental health centers. This movement, later referred to as "deinstitutionalization," continues to impact mental health care. Though he never publicly acknowledged it, the program was a tribute to Kennedy's sister Rosemary, who was born mildly retarded and developed a schizophrenia-like illness. Terrified she'd become pregnant, Joseph Kennedy arranged for his daughter to receive a lobotomy, which was a disaster and left her severely retarded. Fifty years after Kennedy's speech, E. Fuller Torrey's audiobook provides an inside perspective on the birth of the federal mental health program. On staff at the National Institute of Mental Health when the program was being developed and implemented, Torrey draws on his own first-hand account of the creation and launch of the program, extensive research, one-on-one interviews with people involved, and recently unearthed audiotapes of interviews with major figures involved in the legislation. As such, this book provides historical material previously unavailable to the public. Many now wonder why public mental illness services are so ineffective. At least one-third of the homeless are seriously mentally ill, jails and prisons are grossly overcrowded, largely because the seriously mentally ill constitute 20 percent of prisoners, and public facilities are overrun by untreated individuals. As Torrey argues, it is imperative to understand how we got here in order to move forward towards providing better care for the most vulnerable. ungekürzt. Language: English.
