On the Pallium: Lighthouse Church Fathers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 45min
Speaking of the Greek priests of Korfou, the erudite bishop of Lincoln, lately deceased, has remarked, “There is something very picturesque in the appearance of these persons, with their black caps resembling the modius seen on the heads of the ancient statues of Serapis and Osiris, their long beards and pale complexions, and their black flowing cloak, - a relic, no doubt, of the old ecclesiastical garment of which Tertullian wrote.” These remarks are illustrated by an engraving on the same page. He thus identifies the pallium with the gown of Justin Martyr; nor can there be any reasonable doubt that the pallium of the West was the counterpart of the Greek, which St. Paul left at Troas. Endearing associations have clung to it from the mention of this apostolic cloak in Holy Scripture. It doubtless influenced Justin in giving his philosopher’s gown a new significance, and the modern Greeks insist that such was the apparel of the apostles. The seamless robe of Christ himself belongs to him only. Tertullian rarely acknowledges his obligations to other doctors; but Justin’s example and St. Paul’s cloak must have been in his thoughts when he rejected the toga and claimed the pallium as a Christian’s attire. Our Edinburgh translator has assumed that it was the “ascetics’ mantle”, and perhaps it was. Our author wished to make all Christians ascetics, like himself, and hence his enthusiasm for a distinctive costume. Anyhow, “the Doctor’s gown” of the English universities, which is also used among the Gallicans and in Savoy, is one of the most ancient as well as dignified vestments in ecclesiastical use; and for the propheticor preaching function of the clergy it is singularly appropriate. “The pallium”, says a learned author, the late Wharton B. Marriott of Oxford, “in the Greek, is the outer garment or wrapper worn occasionally by persons of all conditions of life". ungekürzt. Language: English. G-8 and His Battle Aces #1, October 1933 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 413min
Will Murray's Pulp Classics #26 G-8 and His Battle Aces Audiobook #1: The Bat Staffel by Robert J. Hogan. Read by Doug Stone. Liner Notes by Will Murray. They called G-8 the Flying Spy. History never recorded his exploits - and for good reason! No one would ever believe World War I was that wild! G-8, the high-flying ace pilot of World War I, was born in the front seat of a car barreling through the Holland Tunnel. His father was Robert Jasper Hogan, who had made quite a name for himself as a prolific pulp writer specializing in aviation fiction during the glamorous era now styled Between the Wars. Among practitioners of that now-lost art, this school of writing was styled Yammering Guns, after the sound of contending synchronized machine guns in furious action. It was the summer of 1933, and despite the Great Depression, Popular Publications was booming. Part of their Autumn expansion plans entailed launching The Spider, and a companion title to be aimed at the legions of readers who drank up fictionalized accounts of World War I Allied aces versus Imperial Germany's various bi-winged counts and barons, red and otherwise. One of Popular's star writers, Hogan was doubtless the first writer publisher Harry Steeger considered when casting about for a suitable scribe. The unnamed magazine was on the schedule as a monthly. The designated author would have to know his rudders and ailerons - and be reliable. Hard drinkers need not apply. And Hogan had been an air cadet during World War I, although the armistice came before he could ship out and see action. Steeger and Hogan hashed out an idea. It was part Eddie Rickenbacker and part What Price Glory? - which was a popular Maxwell Anderson stage play turned into a motion picture. Price stressed the horrors of war as counterpoint to the sentimental comradeship of the Allies in the trenches. Only in this case, by horror, Popular Publications meant something far more horrific than ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Doug Stone, James Gillies, Roger Price. G-8 and His Battle Aces #13, October 1934: The Spider Staffel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 252min
They called G-8 the Flying Spy. History never recorded his exploits - and for good reason! No one would ever believe World War I was that wild! "Be warned! Each night with the setting of the sun the giant Tarantula Spider will spin his web across the Front. If you send your ships out tonight - he will eat them!" HQ scoffed at this warning. But G-8 saw it carried out, saw four Yank planes devoured by the most ghastly creature that ever stalked the skies. What was this new horror? How could Yank bombers hope to get past its net of death? Among the heroes of the pulps who soared through their adventures, G-8 flew higher and farther than any of his contemporaries. His true name unknown, the Flying Spy was no mere flyboy, but the champion ace of World War I. Shadow People (LP+CD)
What was old is new again The old adage is so tired that nobody takes its proper measure: all people hear is the word old , when the important one is new . Making new things out of old things is an act of alchemy. The proof is in this fifth album no rest for the wicked of Perpignan which is blown right open here and there by a few very contemporary guests. After the opener, Ouverture , with its almost surf-like guitars, comes Le Premier Jour , where Lionel Limiñana talks about his rock baptism with the punks, the mods, the skinheads and the Lambrettas of his youth in the South of France. What comes just after is the seismic shock of Istanbul is Sleepy : the Imprimatur of Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre is simply enormous. Then comes Emmanuelles Seigner s super sexy tornado on the title track, and Dimanche follows, with Bertrand Belin. Lionel sees him as a French Nick Cave who writes songs that resemble films. . The Gift features Peter Hook who scrapes his bass guitar again here, obviously a song reminiscent of an early period New Order. Finally, the Limiñanas on their own send out an instrumental cavalcade with a furious beat, like a Kraut Morricone, Motorizzati Marie followed by Pink Flamingos , introduced with psych rock pads played backwards forming a vaporous song bathed in acoustic arpeggios. A respite in the album before the fuzz and the abyssal bass of Trois Bancs violently shakes the ghost of Gainsbourg: an electroshock in talk over. And to close the scene, a love message: De La Part Des Copains , its organ, its tambourine, its quaver and its brass place it in the classic soundtrack category revered by the band. An ideal conclusion for this incredible faultless record. The rock n roll epiphany thus continues. It belongs to those who will listen full blast to Shadow People and will doubtless feel the urge to plug a guitar into an amp. A valve amp, of course. TRACKS: A1. Ouverture. / A2. Potions
Gerard Starkie is one of the finest singers in England. That might sound like pure rhetoric but the evidence has long been evident from the two magnificent albums that Starkie recorded with his former band, Witness. Those records Before the Calm in 1999 and Under a Sun in 2001 received the most extraordinary critical applause, some of which was especially reserved for Starkies own performances. The Times newspaper, for instance, claimed that Starkies vocals are imbued with that nebulous quality of soul fragile, sensitive and exuding a dignified stoicism doubtless born of experience while Q magazines review of Under a Sun stated that almost overburdened by yearning melodies, chief Witness Gerard Starkie sings about lifes travails in aching tones reminiscent of REMs Michael Stipe. Witness were always a band that was meant to be. Even back in 1999 Uncut magazine was claiming that this time next year Witness will be a leading contender for best album of the year. Frustratingly, things didn't work out that way. Formed in Wigan during April 1997, the band moved to Bristol following the release of Before the Calm three years later. In addition to formidable reviews, the album also found favour with the public on the back of a rising live reputation for the band, Before the Calm made the UK charts in the summer of 1999. It was after the release of the second Witness album, however, that the band quit Island Records. Despite phenomenal reviews, the album stubbornly refused to realise it's heightened commercial expectations. By the start of 2004 the band decided on a different direction, with Gerard Starkie now working as a solo artist. 'The band didn't split acrimoniously and there were no bust ups. Dylan Keeton (bass) is still heavily involved in what I'm doing now. Going solo doesn't mean I'll be playing with a bass drum strapped to my back and cymbals on my knees', says Starkie. 'Witness used to work democratically. It's a much more single-minded process now. Obviously that's going to have an effect', he says. 'I've also been working songs on a computer rather than just an acoustic guitar and again, that alters the flavour but, at the end of the day, it's still me writing the songs, so don't expect a hip hop album.'- Shop: odax

Winter Delights
The multi-talented musicians of Cambiata offer a delightful draught of Renaissance cheer for a cold winter's night with this collection of Christmas songs and instrumental settings from England, Germany, and Spain. The versatile quartet, based in Bethlehem, PA, is joined by Alyssa Thatcher, who adds her lovely lyric soprano voice to many of the carols on this recording. John Playford provides the tune for the opening piece, Drive the Cold Winter Away, and Thomas D'Urfey, author of Wit and Mirth: Pills to Purge Melancholy, is generally recognized as the author of the 12-verse ballad text. Cambiata has woven two of these verses into a setting that begins slowly and austerely with unaccompanied voice, then gradually builds to a rousing climax. Greensleeves, one of the most popular and immediately recognizable of all Renaissance melodies, was originally a secular song, and only since 1856-when William Dix added the words "What Child is This?"-has it assumed the role of a Christmas classic. Cambiata offers three settings of this evergreen melody: the first, track 2, is the elaborate and highly ornamented version for English consort by John Johnson, arranged here for solo lute with viol, harpsichord, and recorder accompaniment. It begins in a stately 4/4 time, then moves seamlessly into a spritely 6/8 jig. The second, track 10, is a set of variations for lute by Francis Cutting in 6/8 time. The third setting, track 13, comes from John Playford's The Dancing Master, and segues into Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind, from Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It, sung to the tune of another popular Playford tune, "Goddesses." The refrain "This life is most jolly" is perfectly captured in Cambiata's effervescent arrangement. Rorate Coeli Desuper is a hauntingly beautiful Scottish hymn based on the tune "The Strily Vale." The text, an accretion to the Advent liturgy by the early 16th century poet William Dunbar, is full of rich and evocative imagery. Sara Cox's soaring recorder counterpoint in the second verse is the perfect embodiment of the "celestial fowlès" of Dunbar's poetry. The dulcet sounds of high and low recorders suggest a dialogue of shepherds at the beginning of Quem Pastores Laudavere, a very familiar German tune dating back to the 14th century. Via a solo recorder rendition of the medieval Polish carol Jesuza Judasz Przdal, the medley ends with the cheerful Tempus adest floridum, a 16th century Finnish tune much better known to the English-speaking world as "Good King Wenceslas." Another tune with early origins, Ther is no ros of swych virtu, beautifully illustrates the medieval theme of Jesus as the new-flowering rose, a sentiment also heard in the popular German carol, Es ist ein Ros. The Spanish Carol, with it's flamenco-like guitar accompaniment and syncopated strings, perfectly complements the ever-popular villancico, Riu Riu Chiu. Here, a colorful battery of percussion instruments punctuates a back-and-forth exchange between recorder and krummhorn, again evoking a pastoral duet. No Renaissance Christmas collection would be complete without a lullaby, which evokes the image-so often rendered in paintings of this era-of the tender relationship between the Virgin and the Child. Cambiata offers two of the most beautiful in the repertory: The Lute Book Lullaby ("Sweet was the Song the Virgin Sung") and the Coventry Carol, both affectingly sung by Alyssa Thatcher. Cambiata's arrangement of the very familiar carol The Holly and the Ivy employs only lute and strings accompanying the voice. This is a gentle, lulling rendition of a tune first collected by Cecil Sharp in the early 20th century but doubtless of earlier origin. The text is an amalgam of pagan and Christian imagery, and contains a feature common to several songs on this CD: a comparison of the newborn Jesus to a flower or blossom. Sing Hey for Christmas presents the lustier side of English Yuletide celebrations-a Hogarthian depiction of Christmas revelry that gets a little out of hand. The saucy tune, known as "Dargasson" in the Playford collection, with even saucier words from an anonymous 17th century source, encourages us to throw another log on the fire, make a return trip to the wassail bowl, and toast the New Year.- Shop: odax
