Freedom Flyers: The Tuskegee Airmen of World War II , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 562min
In this inspiring account of the Tuskegee Airmen - the country's first African American military pilots - historian J. Todd Moye captures the challenges and triumphs of these brave aviators in their own words, drawing on more than 800 interviews recorded for the National Park Service's Tuskegee Airmen Oral History Project. Denied the right to fully participate in the U.S. war effort alongside whites at the beginning of World War II, African Americans - spurred on by black newspapers and civil rights organizations such as the NAACP - compelled the prestigious Army Air Corps to open its training programs to black pilots, despite the objections of its top generals. Thousands of young men came from every part of the country to Tuskegee, Alabama, in the heart of the segregated South, to enter the program, which expanded in 1943 to train multi-engine bomber pilots in addition to fighter pilots. By the end of the war, Tuskegee Airfield had become a small city populated by black mechanics, parachute packers, doctors, and nurses. Together, they helped prove that racial segregation of the fighting forces was so inefficient as to be counterproductive to the nation's defense. Freedom Flyers brings to life the legacy of a determined, visionary cadre of African American airmen who proved their capabilities and patriotism beyond question, transformed the armed forces - formerly the nation's most racially polarized institution - and jump-started the modern struggle for racial equality. ungekürzt. Slough House
*Now a major TV series starring Gary Oldman*'The best thriller writer in Britain today' Daily Express'As a master of wit, satire, insight... Herron is difficult to overpraise' Daily Telegraph'The greatest comic writer of spy fiction in the English language' The Times 'Kill us? They've never needed to kill us,' said Lamb. 'I mean, look at us. What would be the point?'A year after a calamitous blunder by the Russian secret service left a British citizen dead from novichok poisoning, Diana Taverner is on the warpath. The Collected Best of Robert Service , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 81min
This new audiobook features a collection of Service's very best and most beloved verses from his time living in and writing about the Klondike.A rover in his youth, Robert Service ended up settling down as a banker in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, in the early part of the century. There, he wrote and recited the crowd-favorite ballads such as "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee", eventually releasing a volume of his work entitled Songs of a Sourdough. He would later transfer with the bank to Dawson City, where he quickly realized his poems had become a great success. He retired from the bank and moved into a two-room cabin on Eighth Avenue, where he committed to writing full-time and produced a novel and two additional volumes of verse about life in the Klondike. He said good-bye to his little cabin in Dawson in 1912, and though he was never able to return, he kept the Yukon very dear to his heart. He continued to write about the First World War, life in Paris, and his time in the Yukon up until his death in 1958 at the age of 84. The cabin still stands in its original location in Dawson City. It is open to visitors in the summer months, where recitations of his work have occurred regularly on the front lawn since 1917.Verses included in this audiobook:"The Spell of the Yukon""The Shooting of Dan McGrew""The Cremation of Sam McGee""The Ballad of Blasphemous Bill""The Men That Don't Fit In""The Trail of 98""The Call of the Wild""The Rhyme of the Remittance Man""At Thirty-Five""The Ballad of Hard-Luck Henry""I'm Scared of It All""A Rolling Stone""The Law of the Yukon""The Song of the Mouth-Organ""The Prospector""Bill the Bomber""The Song of the Wage-Slave""Goodbye Little Cabin" ungekürzt. Secret Service Dogs: The Heroes Who Protect the President of the United States , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 584min
In an age fraught with terrorism, United States Secret Service canine teams risk their lives to safeguard the president, the vice president, their families, visiting heads of state, and a host of others. Unprecedented access to these heroic dog teams has allowed a fascinating first-time-ever look at a very special breed of heroes. Wherever the president goes, there will be dogs. They'll be there no matter what the country or state. They'll be there regardless of the political climate, the danger level, the weather, or the hour. "If you let down your guard on the job," says Special Agent Bill G., canine program manager, "it can change the history of the world." It's a burden Secret Service dog handlers take extremely seriously regardless of their specialty. Tactical dog handlers on the White House lawn, handlers whose dogs sniff for explosives around the world, and those who walk their amiable floppy-eared dogs up and down Pennsylvania Avenue all live one common mantra: Not on my watch. Or my dog's. Secret Service Dogs immerses listeners into the heart of this elite world of canine teams who protect first families, popes, and presidential candidates: the selection of dogs and handlers, their year-round training, their missions around the world, and, most important, the bond - the glue that holds the teams together and can mean the difference between finding bombs and terrorists or letting them slip by. "These animals will gladly run into a hail of gunfire," says '"Stew", a Secret Service ERT tactical canine unit supervisor. "All they ask in return is for their handlers to throw the ball with them, pet them, and talk to them in an embarrassingly high voice." Secret Service Dogs celebrates the Secret Service's most unforgettable canine heroes. It is a must-listen for fans of Maria Goodavage, anyone who wants a rare inside view of the United States Secret Service, or anyone who just loves dogs. ungekürzt. Language: English.
