Bones of My Grandfather: Reclaiming a Lost Hero of WWII , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 511min
A grandson’s quest to bring a fallen war hero home.In November 1943, Marine 1st Lt. Alexander Bonnyman Jr. was mortally wounded while leading a successful assault on critical Japanese fortifications on the Pacific atoll of Tarawa. But it was not until August 2015 that he was finally laid to rest. Bonnyman Jr. was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart for his heroic actions during the bloody battle, which would ultimately claim the lives of almost 2,000 Marines and 5,000 Japanese soldiers. But the lieutenant, along with hundreds of other Marines, was buried in an unmarked grave. He was left behind and his remains never recovered.More than seventy years later, Bonnyman Jr.'s grandson, Clay Bonnyman Evans, took up the search for his grandfather and those other Marines left behind. In Bones of My Grandfather, Evans tells the story of his mission against all odds. His journey began at home, where research into his grandfather’s past uncovered a flawed hero with a checkered past at odds with the narrative he’d been told. Abroad, his first visits to Tarawa would be fruitless, frustrated by nature, bureaucratic red tape, and the US government's own stagnant search for the Marines. But with the help of archaeologist Kristin Baker and Mark Noah, a former pilot who leads international efforts to locate lost American servicemen as part of his History Flight charitable foundation, Evans accomplished his mission. On May 29, 2015, Clay Bonnyman Evans exhumed the bones of his grandfather. More than seventy years after giving his life for his country, a World War II hero was finally buried alongside his family in Texas. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Clay Bonnyman Evans. Marine Close Air Support In World War II (eBook, ePUB)
This paper traces the development of close air support (CAS) by the United States Marine Corps in World War II. The study examines how the Marines started developing their doctrine in the 1930s and adapted their (CAS) system based on the outcome of battles on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, as well as during operations in support of the U.S. Army in the Philippines. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of Marine CAS doctrine, liaison organizational structures, aircraft, and air-to-ground weapons. This study is pertinent because it describes how the Marines developed a very effective weapon that greatly increased the potency of its amphibious operations. Additionally, this was initially accomplished during a period of very limited financial resources (before the start of World War II) and then limited time resources (during the war crisis). This study also shows how the Marines worked to support the forces on the ground with the best CAS system possible despite the opposition.- Shop: buecher

Strong Men Armed: The United States Marines Against Japan , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1034min
Written by Robert Leckie, whose wartime exploits are featured in the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg HBO miniseries The Pacific, Strong Men Armed is the perennial bestselling classic account of the U.S. Marines' relentless drive through the Pacific during World War II. As scout and machine-gunner for the First Marine Division, Leckie fought in all its engagements until his wounding at Peleliu. In Strong Men Armed, Leckie uses firsthand experience and impeccable research to re-create the nightmarish battles of the Pacific campaign---from Guadalcanal to Okinawa---as ships, men, and guns moved over vast distances to fight an enemy that was willing to defend to its last man. Here is the whole sweeping epic of the Marines who battled---and won---on the bloody beaches at Guadalcanal, the unforgiving reefs at Tarawa, the rain-soaked mud of New Britain, the dark gray soil and deadly caves of Mount Suribachi, and the muddy slopes of Shuri Castle on Okinawa. It is a masterful narrative by a writer the New York Times praised as possessing the "rare gift of capturing all that is human in the most inhuman of man's activities." ungekürzt. Language: English. The Rods and the Axe: Carrera, Book 6 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1104min
Tarawa. Iwo. Normandy. Names that shine in the military history of two worlds, places where brave men stormed ashore and fought their way to victory no matter the odds. But then there are other names: Marathon. Malta. Gallipoli. Balboa’s Patricio Carrera has driven the Tauran Union from his adopted country, driven them out with appalling loss and worse humiliation. That’s not enough though. To finally finish his enemies, Carrera needs to draw them back for a more telling defeat. He cannot take the battle to them because, beyond some long-range bombardment capability, he cannot reach them. But when they return, they don’t plan to come alone; they insist on having someone else do most of the bleeding for them. Carrera understands this. And that’s why he’s provoked the Zhong Guo mercilessly, infuriating their ruling Empress. He needs the Zhong in the war, to buck up the Taurans to continue the war to its bitterest end. But to get to Carrera, the Zhong must take the Isla Real, the strongest island fortress on two worlds. In the process, they’ll learn why Marines never forget those other names....Gallipoli…Malta…Marathon. Carrera’s enemies are about to learn why the expression "blood-stained water" is not just a literary allusion. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: James Fouhey.
