Vivaldi was not the only composer to write for the talented girls and women of the Ospedale della Pieta, the convent school in Venice which was apparently full of young musicians trained in vocal and instrumental virtuosity sufficient to tackle virtuoso sonatas and concertos. Nicola Porpora was born in Naples, and is known as a distinguished alumnus of the more operatically inclined Neapolitan school of composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Pergolesi.Porpora worked off and on in Venice, and in 1742 became chorus master at the Ospedale della Pieta, and then from 1744 to 1747 worked in the same role at the Ospedale dei Poveri Derelitti run by the parish of S. Giovanni e Paolo. Most of the works on this CD - some of them recorded for the first time - date from this latter period. The choir was apparently in a parlous state when Porpora took it over, but he turned things around within fairly short order through rigorous daily rehearsals: as Porpora himself wrote on 4 January 1745, "To form a good choir calls for many things, the most important of which I shall describe here. [...] resonant voices possessed by girls who are determined, ready to work hard, and skilled as instrumentalists."The works here are multi-movement settings of psalms and other sacred texts, alternating arias and choruses, solo and ripieno texts, mostly lively in character except where pathos is called for in penitential texts. It makes a fine complement to the recent disc of secular cantatas on Brilliant Classics (BC94311) and is performed with native style by a historically ensemble based in Vicenza, just 60km from La Serenissma itself. The booklet contains a scholarly essay and the full sung texts are available for download at www.brilliantclassics.com.Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) was an important composer, musician and teacher of Baroque Europe. He held several important posts, notably in Dresden, London (where he was Handel's rival) and Venice. He was the teacher of the famous castrato Farinelli and Joseph Haydn. In Venice Porpora was teacher and chorus master at the Ospedale delle Pieta, a charitable institution for orphans and abandoned girls, where music was an important part of the children's education. On this disc are presented a selection of sacred works written for the female choirs of the Ospedale: highly attractive works, full of drama, expressive effects and virtuoso roles for both vocalists and instrumentalists.Excellent performances by the Coro Femminile Harmonia and the Ensemble Barocca e Musicali Affetti, conducted by Michele Perugi.A fascinating document of musical life in Baroque Venice, containing several first recordings!

Gareth Davis (Bassklarinette) - Koen Kaptijn (Posaune) - Peppe Garcia (Percussion) // "I'm actively writing for these four instrumentalists - it's not only the instrument, it's also the person", says Roland Dahinden. It's a collaboration between the quartet and the composer, and as with Duke Ellington and his musicians, the results are personal, and of universal appeal.

Leonardo García Alarcón (Cembalo) - Balazs Maté (Cello) // In the Europe of the first half of the seventeenth century, instrumental music became a source of sonic and expressive experimentation. Influenced by vocal rhetoric, composers sought to replace words with a new musical language. The virtuosity of the instrumentalists developed, as did invention, improvisation and the search for surprising sonorities.

This is a very subdued and natural sounding album that highlights Pekka's versatility, the individual and collective talents of Pekka and his guests in duet settings, as well as creating an intimate and unpretentious ambience. Impressive debut from one of Finlands's most talented musicians. GUEST STARS: Wimme Saari - voice Sanna Kurki-Suonio - voice Timo Alakotila (JPP, Aldargaz, Troka) - harmonium Arto Järvelä (JPP, Aldargaz, Pinnin Pojat) - violin Jarmo Saari (XL) - guitar Riitta Kossi (Helsinki melodeon ladies, ex-Värttinä) - accordion. BIO Living on the fortress island of Suomenlinna three kilometres off the coast of Helsinki yields a fascinating vantage point over the life and happenings in the capital of Finland - and the whole nation. Not too surprisingly, this perspective is something artists find especially appealing. One of the musicians sharing the experience with the 900 people living on this historically significant island is Pekka Lehti. Although nowadays involved in varied projects, Pekka Lehti (b. 1965 in Joensuu, Karelia) first entered the world of music by beginning to play the bass in a punk rock band. Twenty years later the man would pay tribute to that group, 'Outo Voima' ('Strange Force'), by naming his own debut album after it. But between these two cornerstones of his career, Lehti's solemn double bass has been heard in numerous situations both locally and globally. Kicking off his professional career at the age of 17, the brave bassman has plunged into a dizzying array of settings from backing up singer/songwriters to sweating the night away with jazz combos to producing a concert based on the music of Nino Rota and beyond. Many exciting projects aside, Pekka's most widely recognized working environment has been, since 1992, the modernist folklore ensemble Värttinä. As an arranger, co-leader and composer Lehti is a valuable team player in the ranks of this vanguardian world music collective which has performed live all over Europe, Asia, Latin America, and North America. The bassist can be heard on 'Aitara' (1994), 'Kokko' (1996), 'Vihma' (1998) and 'Ilmatar' (2000). Pekka Lehti steps to the fore with 'Outo Voima'. This disc presents a collection of duets with vocalists and instrumentalists with whom Pekka has crossed paths during his long and winding career in music. With the goal of capturing the strong Nordic inspiration at it's purest, most of the album was recorded 'on location' - either in Lehti's living room or the collaborators' homes. Therefore 'Outo Voima' seems possessed by an irresistible timeless magic. These meditative tunes are not only the first statement of a mature solo artist, but also a poignant cry out for peace and quiet: Impressions from the outside looking in. The Suomenlinna spirit.

GESTIRE LO SPAZIO With only an electric bass... as simple as that A disc like no other: all the beautiful pieces in this album have been composed and played by Tiziano Zanotti on a solo electric bass, with the supplement of a few and quite singular electronic effects and the unexpected and fleeting "injection" of an acoustic piano. All tracks are by the musician himself, except tracks 6-13 by T.Zanotti/N.Ciarmatori. Track 14 is dedicated to Bruno Maderna. --------------------------- EXTRACT FROM PRODUCER'S LINER NOTES: 'This solo bass project had been around for quite a long time, initially just as a live show... It was certainly a big challenge for Tiziano Zanotti to show that the electric bass can be a valuable instrument in it's own right on a whole disc, able to hold the listener's attention with no support other than a few and unobtrusive effects and percussion sounds. Can the bass be a full solo instrument, as powerful and expressive as a piano or a guitar? Well, after listening to this CD, I believe it can. I was transported by it's beautiful melodies, with Jazz, Blues and Classical (even Renaissance!) influences, and was completely amazed by the different sounds and shades produced by a 6-string bass... The musician told me that he first had to structure the basic shape of most of the pieces in writing - just like a classical composer, as he so deeply is, and then improvised to develop his musical ideas, modify balances, explore new harmonies, all the time seeking to exploit the instrument's full potential. In the end, one thing stands out: this inspiring work by Tiziano Zanotti presents us with a new and very personal way of experiencing and playing the electric bass.' (A.B.) --------------------------- THE ARTIST BIO Bassist, double bassist and composer, after completing his classical studies, Tiziano Zanotti has attended several jazz and rock music master classes, becoming also a skilled guitar, piano and cello player. He has studied with: Marc Johnson, Furio di Castri, Palle Danielsson, Bruno Tommaso, Pat Martino, Ubaldo Fioravanti, Trilok Gurtu, Gianluigi Trovesi, Peter Erskine, John Taylor, Giancarlo Gazzani, to name just a few... He has played in several symphony orchestras like Orchestra Filarmonica Antonio Guarnieri of Adria, Orchestra Filarmonica of Udine, Euterpe and Musike groups, collaborating with chamber music groups such as Diapason and Octandre in Bologna (contemporary music), Gruppo Amadeus in Bologna (baroque music), and the Guarnieri Basses Ensemble (double bass quartet). He has also played with outstanding artists like Claudio Lolli, Nicola Piovani's Oracoeli Orchestra, Andrea Bocelli, Franz Campi, Josef Alessi, Andrea Giuffredi, Parto delle Nuvole Pesanti (among many others), and in several jazz and rock bands. His live experiences include the participation to such festivals as Clusone Jazz Festival 2007, Rock in Rho, Primo Tributo a Frank Zappa 2006, 41° Festival Pontino, Disma Music Show, Autunno Musicale Nonantolano, Organi Antichi, Scandellara Rock Festival, Bologna Sogna, Musica Attuale Brescia, Note d'Autore, Summertime in Jazz, Maggio Musicale Massese, Manà Jazz Festival, Eurocreation: progetto Pépinières, IV Festival Nazionale di Ottoni "G Corsini", Percorsi in Villa, Populart Jazz, Eroticamente, Marghera Estate Village, Circoli e Cortili, Sonica, Festival della Letteratura Poliziesca, L'assassino è il Chitarrista, Tam Tam Suoni e Culture dal Mondo, SummerFest in Dresden... He has been involved in several recording productions as a performer, arranger and artistic producer, while as a leader he has published the CDs "Minimized" (CFM 1998), "Tarabuk" (Velut Luna 2006) and 'Influences' (Echoes 2007), acclaimed by both the public and the specialized press. He is also a well-known music educator. He has taught at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Fondazione Arturo Toscanini in Parma and Idea in Bologna. In 1996 he founded the 'Centro di Formazione Musicale' in Bologna, where he worked as director and teacher of bass and double bass, publishing a number of manuals and multimedia CDs translated into English and French. His latest instructional manual, "Bassista contemporaneo" (Echoes 2006), is now a sales success. His upcoming projects include a disc for voice, double bass and effects, and the development of the Influences duo (double bass and soprano sax), with the production of a new album with original pieces and the collaboration of other instrumentalists.

OVERTURE - JADE CD 1123 An anthology of works by Australian composers in a wide range of styles and musical groupings: saxophone quartet, mandolin ensemble, solo mandolin, solo piano, solo organ, and wind ensemble with percussion. Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 - ERIC GROSS (b.1926) SUITE LATIN AMERICAN op.302 (2008) for multi-instrumentalist Saxophone Quartet. The TANGO CONCERTANTE, completed in 2007 received a very enthusiastic reception by the members of the Fo(u)r Fans - Saxophone Quartet to whom this Suite is dedicated. It was therefore decided to create a suite of movements in a Latin American style. The title of each movement indicates the style, mood and rhythmic provenance of the musical content, with the BALADA providing a calm and gentle contrast to the other, livelier movements. Because of the versatility of the instrumentalists for whom the suite has been composed, the composer succumbed to the temptation to provide additional variety of timbre by utilising also instruments other than the various saxophones, which the members of this ensemble play so expertly. Track 1 - Tango Concertante Track 2 - Rumbaphonics Track 3 - Balada Track 4 - Samba Track 5 - Hat This Suite was recorded privately in Weimar, Germany in 2008 and the fifth movement, "Hatdance" will be recorded in due course. The members of the Fo(u)r Fans- Saxophone Quartet are: • Ruediger Trosits-Sopr.Sax/Flute/Bb Clt. • Berndt Klinke-Alto Sax/Sopr.Sax/Flt/Picc./Bb Clt./B'Clt. • Holger Arndt-Ten.Sax/Eb Clt./ B'Clt. • Jens Kaiser-Baritone Sax/Bb Clt. Track 8 - ERIC GROSS. SALLYGRAPHY FOR PIANO is a musical tribute to pianist Sally Mays who is heard here playing this light-hearted piece. Track 7 ANN CARR-BOYD (b. 1938) MUSIC FOR AN IMAGINARY ITALIAN FILM (1985) Music for an Imaginary Italian Film was originally performed and commissioned by the Australian Mandolin Society and the First Performance was at one of their music camps. The music was later recorded at Studios 301 in 1992 with the Large Ensemble of the Sydney Mandolins conducted by Adrian Hooper. Music for an Imaginary Italian Film has proved to be one of Ann Carr - Boyd's most popular pieces together with her FANDANGO (1982), also written for the Sydney Mandolins. This track is the new digitally mastered recording especially created for this compact disc. Track 8 ROBERT ALLWORTH A WINTER'S LANDSCAPE (1972-2010) Pianist John Martin plays this piece which was revised and is dedicated to the memory of DEREK FRANCIS LEE WARD, to whom this album is also dedicated. This is my freshman effort, and I am actually very proud of it considering the time it took. I have now been through it and am ready for someone to sponsor me for the next time. The Band: Ken Lovern - Piano and Hammond Organ. Terry Swope - Guitar. James Albright - Bass. Sam Platt - Drums, Percussions. Guest appearance of Kyle Dahlquist on Accordion on the "Hideaway" track. "6 AM" actually started off as a noodling project with a wonderful guitarist (I should say instrumentalist- he is crazy talented) Brad Dungca. 'For You, Oh Love' and 'For You My Love' are actually the same song, except that the second is a ballad with a more AABA structure rather than the shorter AA. A great suggestion made by another great guitarist, Max Berry. This was a nice little experiment for me. "For You My Love" Ken Lovern was on had to help with the arrangement as well as the performance. "Check Please" and "On the Other Hand" are just fun songs. "Time Just Slipped" was actually a ballad when I wrote it and recorded a demo of it. Another exercise though- I wanted to change the style of this song for this CD. "Something With Someone" - even my sad songs have hope. "Hurry" - Though I had that written, it ended up being a collaborative effort with the band to arrange. Lots of fun... "Too Late" - A lounge/soul fusion. "He Moves Me" - An old song I wrote that I found again and was glad to re-visit. 'Hideaway' - very different from the others, and yet I felt it was a good way to end the CD. I even have the drummer (Sam) adding some background vocals on it towards the end. I really am glad I did this project. I had a great group of instrumentalists to work with! It's pretty much face value- what you hear is what you get. No clever innuendos or hidden agendas- just good music I like to think. It was a learning experience, and as I listen to it (being my own critic of course) I actually am glad to finally share this. Hope it gives someone else a little positive power in their day!
