Art Criticism and Modernism in the United States (eBook, ePUB)
This study is an analysis of 'high' and 'late' modernist criticism in New York during the 1960s and early 1970s. Through a close reading of a selection of key critics of the period-which will expand the remit beyond the canonical texts-the book examines the ways that modernist criticism's discourse remains of especial disciplinary interest. Despite its alleged narrowness and exclusion, the debates of the 1960s raised fundamental questions concerning the nature of art writing. Those include arguments around the nature of value and judgement; the relationship between art criticism and art history; and the related problem of what we mean by the 'contemporary.' Stephen Moonie argues that within those often-fractious debates, there exists a shared discourse. And further, contrary to the current consensus that modernists were elitist, dogmatic, and irrelevant to contemporary debates on art, the study shows that there is much that we can learn from reconsidering their writings. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, modern art, art criticism, and literary studies.- Shop: buecher

Cupidity: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 560min
From the best-selling author of Lottery comes a new novel about greed, survival, and what's really important in life. At the bottom of the heap, there's nowhere to go but up. Waitress Tammy Tyree knows this intimately. Her life is a continual struggle of managing an eccentric uncle, looking after a younger brother who's not quite right, and doing everything she can to keep her family together in the small town of Spring, Washington. But Tammy has a couple of things going for her no matter how dire things get. She's tenacious and has her own take on karma. She believes the more unfortunate things that happen to a person, the more that person is due for a windfall. Each and every misfortune is a further guarantee that a golden opportunity is just around the corner. When Tammy receives a confidential e-mail about an inheritance that's hers to claim, she's certain her ship has come in. Just a few details need to be ironed out, like a small matter of some fees to pay, bank forms to fill out, and taxes to remit, but she knows each complication brings her closer to that golden goose of egg-laying renown. What starts as a personal quest ends up embroiling Tammy and everyone she holds dear in a scheme that could be the financial downfall of them all or the rescue of a small town that's slowly but surely falling through the cracks. ungekürzt. The Orion Affair: A Joseph Michael Barber Thriller , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 958min
In the wake of a catastrophic terrorist attack on a beloved American icon, Walt Disney World, the President vows “never again”. A new covert government anti-terrorist group is established, buried deep inside the National Security Agency. Its mission – stop the next terrorist attack before it happens. Their remit is to do whatever it takes, and there are no rules. Frightening new technologies are leveraged to spy on terrorists and everyday citizens alike in pursuit of public safety. And the government deploys a new and deadly offensive weapon against terrorists operating on US soil - a domestic strike drone disguised as a civilian aircraft to mask its mission. Joseph Michael Barber, the CEO of his own security firm, Orion Bellicus, is drawn into the government’s web of deceit and incompetence when he is asked to investigate the deaths of a dear friend’s wife and children during a botched terrorist attack near Detroit, Michigan. Barber, the son of a Vietnam-era Navy sniper and a former special forces operator himself, will draw on all of his skills, training and the enormous smarts of the people working for him at Orion Bellicus to untangle the web. What he finds is astonishing and beyond his worst fears. Mistakes are made, innocent people are murdered, and the Constitution gets shredded as the new government agency becomes more focused on plausible deniability and self-preservation than protecting the American people. From the distant mirror of the Vietnam delta to the Middle East; from South America to San Francisco; and from mainland China to Washington DC, The Orion Affair delivers heart-pounding action ripped from today’s headlines. ungekürzt. Light Shining in the Forest , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 651min
Norman Stokoe has just been appointed Children's Czar by the new government. He sells his flat and moves up north to take up the position. However before his first salary cheque has even hit his bank account, new priorities are set for the government department for which he works. The Children's Czar network is put on hold but it is too late to reverse the decision to employ Norman. So he is given a P.A. and a spacious office in a new business park on the banks of the Tyne. He settles down in his new leather chair behind his new desk, to wait for the green light to begin his mission. The green light never comes. What does happen is that two children go missing. As Children's Czar, surely this case should fall within his remit, but Norman has built a career on doing nothing, on stamping pieces of paper with "send to the relevant department". Now, faced with a campaigning journalist and a distraught mother, he is forced to become involved. The search will take him to dark places and will make him ask questions about the system he is supposed to uphold. Read by David Timson. He wrote The History of the Theatre, which won an award for most original production from the Spoken Word Publishers Association in 2001. The Compleat Ankh-Morpork
Greetings, adventurer! We lay before you this most comprehensive gazetteer encompassing all the streets of Ankh-Morpork, as well as information on its principal businesses, hotels, taverns, inns, and places of entertainment and refreshment, enhanced by the all-new and compleat map of our great city state. Our city has grown well beyond its ancient walls, but the remit of this commission from the honourable Guild of Merchants was to 'map the city', the pulsing organ of commerce and culture, the heart as opposed to the body, and this we have done. In spades. We ask that when you pore over this glorious work you spare some thought for the humble cartographers and surveyors who made journeys into the darker corners of our metropolis - no less dangerous than the wilds of Skund or Bhangbhangduc. To some the only memorial is the map you now possess. Others, in their quest for knowledge, paid the highest price that scholarship demands, which is to say, a day off in lieu. And so we dedicate this map and these accompanying words to the officers, councilors and members of the Merchants' Guild and to all who will find in its pages paths yet to tread and places yet to explore within the magnificentbwonder that is the city of Ankh-Morpork.- Shop: buecher
