Stalin: The First In-depth Biography Based on Explosive New Documents from Russia's Secret Archives, Hörbuch, Digital, 377min
Granted privileged access to Russia's secret archives, Edvard Radzinsky has broken down the iron curtain of myth, secrecy, and lies that has surrounded Stalin's life and career, painting a picture of the Soviet strongman as more calculating, ruthless, and blood-crazed than has ever been imagined; a man for whom power was all, terror a useful weapon, and deceit a constant companion. Radzinsky uncovers the startling truth about this most enigmatic of historical figures. Only now, in the post-Soviet era, can what was suppressed be told: Stalin's long-denied involvement with terrorism as a young revolutionary; the real story of how he mangled his left arm; the crucial importance of his role during the October Revolution; his often hostile relationship with Lenin; the details of his organization of terror, culminating in the infamous show trials of the 1930s; his secret dealings with Hitler, and how they backfired; and the horrifying plans he had to send the Soviet Union's Jews to concentration camps, tantamount to a potential second Holocaust. Radzinsky also takes an intimate look at Stalin's private life, and his turbulent relationship with his wife Nadezhda, recreating the circumstances that led to her suicide. Finally, Radzinsky discovers one of Stalin's elite bodyguards, who breaks 40 years of silence to give the strongest evidence yet of the conspiracy behind Stalin's death. The Kremlin intrigues, the private worlds of the Soviet Empire's ruling class, Radzinsky thrillingly brings them to life. And the riddle of that most cold-blooded of leaders, a man for whom nothing was sacred in his pursuit of absolute might, and perhaps the greatest mass murderer in Western history, is solved. 'The Solitary Man': In Defence of Preppers , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 211min
There are millions of "preppers" that are working feverishly every day to get prepared for what they fear is a disaster about to happen in America. The motivation for prepping is different for each person. Donald has been getting his farmstead ready by making it more self-reliant in case of a solar storm occurrence that the experts say had a 12% chance of taking the electrical grid out. They should have said a 100% because it has happened and Donald was nowhere near done prepping for it when it occurred. Now the burden is on his shoulders to figure out how to pull the community together for mutual survival while trying to hold onto his own small store of preps. The Sun has exploded a coronal mass ejection and sun spot activity sent electromagnetic waves toward Earth that disabled all power and communications. His pursuing self-reliance to optimize return on resources might of just backfired on him and made him a target, as he is about to get overwhelmed with people who had not prepared and are asking or demanding to share in the food that he has put away for his family. Prepper community core values include 1) Being responsible for our own destiny as individuals, and 2) Assisting one another to advance our well-being. Prepper wisdom dictates that you are your own best bet. If you begin your life with that premise, then it will be hard to become a victim. That does not mean that you will not encounter barriers to your achievements or get victimized. This is the hard part to prepare for. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Duane Sharp. Flight of the Puffin (eBook, ePUB)
The author of The Benefits of Being an Octopus delivers a stirring novel in which one small act of kindness ripples out to connect four kids in need of support. Libby comes from a long line of bullies. To cope, she leaves motivational postcards around town for others who might feel as belittled as she does. When she hears about a kid on the other side of the country who's getting the bully treatment, she mails him a postcard saying: "You're amazing." That kid is Vincent. His plan to stop the bullying backfired in a big way, so he's stopped going to school. But when he gets Libby's note, he's so moved by her gesture that he wants to help someone, too. He starts bringing food to T, who's homeless and living on a sidewalk. T doesn't identify as male or female, and ran away from home because their family wouldn't accept them. As T and Vincent get to know each other, T helps build Vincent's confidence, and inspires him to write to a kid he saw in the newspaper recently. That kid is Jack. He's been petitioning to keep his small school open; it might lose funding if it doesn't make some changes. One of them is to add a gender-neutral bathroom--making transgender students a hot-button issue at the school board meeting. Jack gets misquoted in a newspaper that Vincent reads, and Vincent sends him a letter explaining how we all need to listen better and let people be who they are. Vincent's letter helps Jack start thinking more deeply, as does meeting Libby, who is astounded at how much change her small act of hopefulness has wrought . . . and will continue to ripple out.- Shop: buecher

The Collapse of the Soviet Union: The History of the USSR Under Mikhail Gorbachev , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 120min
The Cold War moved into one of its most dangerous phases after Brezhnev’s death as both sides deployed nuclear weapons within alarming proximity in Europe. A NATO exercise, “Operation Able Archer”, almost led to a Soviet miscalculation, and when the Soviets shot down a South Korean airliner in September 1983, claiming it had strayed into Soviet airspace, the Cold War became very tense indeed. After going through three elderly leaders in three years, Mikhail Gorbachev was chosen as the new General Secretary at the relatively young age of 54 in March 1985. Gorbachev hoped to build the Soviet economy to relieve the persistent shortages of consumer goods it faced, which were caused by enormous military spending of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev tried to introduce some economic reforms, but they were blocked by communist hardliners. Gorbachev then came to the belief that the Soviet economy could not improved without political reform as well.Limited political reforms, such as broadcasting uncensored debates in which politicians openly questioned government policy, backfired when they energized eastern European opposition movements which began to overthrow their communist governments in 1989. Gorbachev was unwilling to reoccupy these eastern European nations and use the Soviet army to put down these revolts.Inspired by the revolts in Eastern Europe, the small Soviet Baltic republics, which had long chafed under Russian rule, also began to clamor for independence from the Soviet Union. In 1990, Gorbachev allowed non-Communist party politicians to run for office throughout the Soviet Union, and the Communist Party lost to independence candidates in six Soviet republics, including the three Baltic republics. The Baltic republics then declared independence from the Soviet Union. In comparison with other Soviet leaders, Gorbachev was leader of the USSR for a relatively short period, but the changes that took place under his leadership were monumental, ungekürzt. Blitz: Trump Will Smash the Left and Win , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 436min
Buckle up — 2020 will be the political ride of your life! In November, Trump will smash the left and win!“We love David Horowitz. He thinks Trump is gonna win in a landslide in November, and he gives reasons why in the book, and he says Republicans are gonna be singing 'Happy Days Are Here Again' once November comes and the election is over and the votes are counted.” (Rush Limbaugh)"He is one of the bravest guys. He found the real intent [of the Left] was to control America. He has never, ever sat down. A true national treasure.” (Glenn Beck)“If you’re interested in debating deranged liberals with facts, you won’t want to miss this latest book.” (Donald Trump, Jr.)“Blitz is a must-read for those who want to better understand what is really happening in the ‘idea war’ for the soul of America.” (Governor Mike Huckabee)Blitz reveals the attacks made against Trump have been the most brutal ever mounted against a sitting president of the United States. Blinded by deep-seated hatred of his person and his policies, the left even desperately tried to oust Trump in a failed impeachment bid. Horowitz shows that their very attacks — targeting a man whose mission has been to “Drain the Swamp” and “Make America Great Again” backfired, turning Trump himself into a near martyr while igniting the fervor of his “base.”With the 2020 election upon us, New York Times best-selling author David Horowitz chronicles the brutal battles, bitter backlash, and leftwing lies Trump has faced as Democrats repeatedly try to sabotage his presidency. You’ll discover the left’s terrifying socialist and, in some cases, communist agendas as you’ve never seen them before. Trump’s response? In the meantime, he’s going to steamroll this opposition in November using the same playbook he has used to win before. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Phil Paonessa. Live by the Sword: The Secret War Against Castro and the Death of JFK , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1572min
In this fascinating and masterful work of research, Gus Russo finally unmasks the hidden secrets that have surrounded the Kennedy assassination for 35 years.Russo's audiobook is packed with never-before-seen documents and photographs, and never-before-known information - the result of tireless research and exhaustive interviews with countless key players in the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations. When the Warren Commission released the statement that “Oswald acted alone with no clear motive”, it was clearly an inadequate explanation. For years, this conclusion, combined with official silence on the topic, encouraged professional doubters, or “Kennedy researchers”, to wonder if the government itself had some complicity in the crime. But these skeptics were asking the wrong question. The question never asked was not who killed JFK, but why he was killed. And the answer to this question is the reason for over 30 years of government coverups. In Live by the Sword, Gus Russo attacks this very question. Guiding listener through the labyrinth of information and intrigue, he explores the assassination in context, explaining the atmosphere of the times as well as the actions that led, inexorably, to the defining moment of this generation. This background prepares you for the stunning realization that is the core of this audiobook: The Kennedys' relentless pursuit of Castro and Cuba backfired in tragedy on that terrible day in November 1963.An acclaimed investigative reporter and longtime student of the Kennedy presidency, author Gus Russo was one of the lead reporters on Frontline’s landmark 1993 documentary, “Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?” Most recently, he served as chief investigative reporter for ABC’s Dangerous World: The Kennedy Years, hosted by Peter Jennings. He has assisted authors Gerald Posner, Seymour Hersh, and Anthony Summers with their books on Kennedy-related subjects, and has served as consultant to ungekürzt. Language: English. Lu: Track, Book 4 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 290min
Selected as one of the Young Adult Library Services Association's 2019 Top 10 Amazing Audiobooks for Young Adults! Lu must learn to leave his ego on the sidelines if he wants to finally connect with others in the climax to the New York Times best-selling and award-winning Track series from Jason Reynolds. Ghost. Patina. Sunny. Lu. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle-school track team - a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other but to themselves.Lu is your quintessential pretty boy athlete, complete with fancy cleats, sunglasses, and a lot of attitude. The kind of guy you either hero-worship or want to punch. He runs the most loved race - the 400 meter dash - and is crazy talented. He should be - he’s been running track since he was small; because he’s albino his parents got him involved in sports to help with his confidence. But it sort of backfired - now Lu has confidence to spare, and the swagger hasn’t earned him any friends. As in none. Plus, his dad, who also shares his son’s penchant for being flashy, has gotten caught up in some type of illegal activity. The Newbies on the team (Ghost, Patina, and Sunny) don’t put up with Lu’s shining around, but they also don’t avoid him like everyone else does. They call him out on his BS but include him in the horseplay. Will they be the first kids to crack through his armor and see more to him than the cloak of peacock that hides his lack of color? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Guy Lockard. Car Crazy: The Battle for Supremacy Between Ford and Olds and the Dawn of the Automobile Age , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 681min
In Car Crazy, G. Wayne Miller, author of Toy Wars: The Epic Struggle Between G.I. Joe, Barbie, and the Companies That Make Them and Men and Speed: A Wild Ride Through NASCAR's Breakout Season, takes listeners back to the wild and wooly years of the early automobile era - from 1893, when the first US-built auto was introduced, through 1908, when General Motors was founded and Ford's Model T went on the market. The motorcar was new, paved roads few, and devotees of this exciting and unregulated technology battled with citizens who thought the car a dangerous scourge of the wealthy that was shattering a more peaceful way of life. As the machine transformed American culture for better and worse, early corporate battles for survival and market share transformed the economic landscape. Among the pioneering competitors were: Ransom E. Olds, founder of Olds Motor Works, inventor of the assembly line (Henry Ford copied him), and creator of a new company called REO; Frederic L Smith, cutthroat businessman who became CEO of Olds Motor Works after Olds was ousted in a corporate power play; William C. "Billy" Durant of Buick Motor Company (who would soon create General Motors); and genius inventor Henry Ford. The fiercest fight pitted Henry Ford against Frederic Smith of Olds. Olds was the early winner in the race for dominance, but now the Olds empire was in trouble, its once-industry leading market share shrinking, its cash dwindling. Ford was just revving up. But this was Ford's third attempt at a successful auto company - and if this one failed, quite possibly his last. So Smith fought Ford with the weapons he knew best: lawyers, blackmail, intimidation, and a vicious advertising smear campaign that ultimately backfired. Increasingly desperate, in need of dazzling PR that would help lure customers to his showrooms, Smith staged the most outrageous stunt of the era. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Don Hagen.
