In 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships set sail from Seville, Spain, to discover a water route to the fabled Spice Islands in Indonesia, where the most sought-after commodities (cloves, pepper, and nutmeg) flourished. Three years later, a handful of survivors returned with an abundance of spices from their intended destination, but with just one ship carrying 18 emaciated men. During their remarkable voyage around the world the crew endured starvation, disease, mutiny, and torture. Many men died, including Magellan, who was violently killed in a fierce battle.  This is the first full account in nearly half a century of this voyage into history: a tour of the world emerging from the Middle Ages into the Renaissance; a startling anthropological account of tribes, languages, and customs unknown to Europeans; and a chronicle of a desperate grab for commercial and political power. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 97-100/100 Punkte  "The final blend of the 2017 Cos d'Estournel is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Very deep purple-black in color, it offers up intense scents of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and black cherries with touches of incense, spice cake, star anise and plum preserves plus a perfumed hint of potpourri. The palate is medium-bodied with very firm yet wonderfully ripe, "sweet", fine-grained tannins at just 13% alcohol-something of a miracle in our modern times. The palate sports fantastic freshness and tons of energy emitted from the intensely perfumed black fruit layers, finishing on an epically long-lingering mineral note. Truly profound."  Weinwisser: 18/20 Punkte "66 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 32 % Merlot, 1 % Petit Verdot, 1 % Cabernet Franc. 2023 – 2040" James Suckling: 97-98/100 Punkte  "Love tasting this wine. You almost want to drink it for its harmony and balance. Full-bodied and so complete with cloves, spices, dark berries and hints of chocolate. Wonderful integration on the finish." Wine Enthusiast: 96/100 Punkte  "Barrel Sample. This impressive wine is serious, dense and richly endowed with great swathes of black plum. An excellent wine from this estate, ripe black fruits, layers of acidity and dark tannins are perfectly poised. This is a wine for long-term aging." Vinous (Neal Martin): 94-96/100 Punkte "The 2017 Cos d’Estournel is matured in 60% new oak and comprises 13% alcohol, approximately the same as the 2016. It has a more expressive and welcoming bouquet than usual, maybe more indicative of how this wine will mature in bottle, less opaque than the 2016. A common theme throughout the range from Cos d’Estournel is a Pauillac-inspired backbone/tannic structure coupled with an attractive scent wafting over from the estuary...think mudflats, oyster shells and the tang of sea spray. It gains a little intensity with aeration but never fully lets go. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannin, rendering this one of the most approachable barrel samples from the estate in recent years. The coolness of the latter part of the season defines this Saint-Estèphe more than the precocity of June: streamlined, cool and linear with a velvety finish that feels sleek, to the point of being understated, though that belies its length and focus. This is simply a very classy wine in the making and typical of the more recent sophisticated style pursued by the property in recent years.“ Bitte beachten Sie die Sonderbedingungen der Subskription in unseren AGB.

Blockbuster! James Suckling: 98-99/100 Punkte »This is incredibly complex with hazelnut, currant, berry and dried-flower character. The impression of a vat of fermenting cabernet. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a long, soft and silky finish. Shows the essence of the fruit here. Fascinating. Layered and complex.« Decanter: 98/100 Punkte »There is a luxurious, languorous feel right from the very first nose here, which continues step for step all the way through the palate. It's a highly impressive wine with an amazing texture - something that is starting to mark Smith Haut Lafitte out every year. Notes of dark chocolate, black cherry and liquorice stretch out through the rich palate, displaying tension and texture.  2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Harvested 18 September to 10 October. 60% new oak. Drinking Window 2027 - 2042« Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 97-99+/100 Punkte »Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot aging in 60% new barriques, the very deep purple-black colored 2018 Smith Haut Lafitte is a little shy to begin. With coaxing, it very slowly unfurls to reveal a heart-stopping perfume of violets, red roses, kirsch, black cherries and redcurrant jelly, before giving way to a profound core of warm blackcurrants, blackberry preserves, molten licorice and cinnamon stick with nuances of dried mint, orange blossoms (yes!) and cloves. Full-bodied, the fruit does veritable pirouettes on your palate, both elegant and powerful in its expression, coating the mouth with densely packed red and black fruits while revealing tons of mineral, floral and savory sparks, framed by exquisitely fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing very long.« Falstaff: 96/100 Punkte »Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, dezente Randaufhellung. Feine Holzwürze, dunkles Waldbeerkonfit, zart nach Brombeeren und Kirschen, Nougat, tabakige Nuancen. Saftig, elegant, schokoladige Textur, eingebundene Tannine, süßer Nachhall, sehr gut anhaftend, sicheres Reifepotenzial.«  Wine Spectator: 95-98/100 Punkte  »Ripe and lush, with delicious waves of plum, blackberry and black currant preserve flavors laced with subtle charcoal, tobacco and licorice notes. There's a long flow through the finish. Beautifully rendered, capturing the ripeness of the vintage in spades without being heady at all.« Wine Enthusiast: 95-97/100 Punkte »Barrel Sample. This is a finely structured, impressive wine that displays bold tannins and a streak of freshness. This shows great balance between its bold structure and rich fruit. Its tannins are the sign of its aging potential.« Weinwisser: 19/20 »60 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 34 % Merlot, 4 % Cabernet Franc, 2 % Petit Verdot, 60 % neue Barriques, 21 hl/ha.

When the world's finest restaurateurs need assistance, they know they can rely on the Gourmet Detective's discriminating palate to get the job done. After a family of eccentrically dysfunctional British aristocrats hires the sleuth to design a menu for their medieval-theme castle resort, he anticipates a great opportunity to explore a forgotten but nonetheless mouth-watering cuisine. A cake walk? Maybe not, but with the bloodshed of the Middle Ages centuries past, it should at least be safe.... Wrong again. Exploring new variations on succulent recipes for fresh venison with traditional frumenty-a pudding made from wholewheat grains, chopped almonds, egg yolk and saffron-the discerning sleuth finds himself the prime suspect in a murder investigation! It seems that a professional joust re-enactor's goose was cooked after he finished one of the investigator's feasts, and authorities have determined the cause of death: poisoning. To make matters worse, the dead actor had stood in at the last minute for the scion of the infighting noble family... had the poison been meant for him? And why would someone want to kill him? Before he can answer these questions, the intrepid Gourmet Detective will have to dodge stray arrows, escape a flooding dungeon, avoid the authorities' suspicion, and nab the crooks-all while finding a way to get four-and-twenty live blackbirds under the crust of a pot-pie already filled with chicken, bacon, mushrooms, raisins, and cloves. Can the Gourmet Detective solve the crime, save his skin, and design an authentic assortment of medieval Europe's most prized delicacies in the meantime? One way or the other, it won't be a banquet. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: David Baker. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/005941/bk_adbl_005941_sample.mp3. With a history so vast, it is difficult to preserve the traditions and cultures from the olden times, yet Korea seems to have maintained it despite the many invasions and situations that it went through. Nationalism and patriotism is reflected in all the Koreans. Every country has their own mythology and belief of how their people came to be, and the Koreans have theirs too. The Korean mythology speaks of a demigod Hwan Woong who came down on earth on Taebak Mountain, which is now the Gangwon-do Province in South Korea. The demigod met a bear and tiger living in a cave who wished to become humans. The demigod asked them to eat 20 cloves of garlic and refrain from sunlight for 100 days if they wished to become man. The tiger failed the test, as it couldn't withstand the dark, but after 21 days, the bear became a woman. Since there was no one for the woman to procreate, Hwan Woong turned himself into a man, temporarily creating the Korean race. Maybe this is why the Koreans love garlic and use it extensively in their cooking. While the mythology seems too fun to hear, the history of Korea speaks of something else. Korea happens to be one of the most culturally homogeneous countries in the world. They have very few physical and cultural differences amongst them. Koreans have great respect for their ancestors and elders. Confucian culture dominates the area and it is seen in other factors of life as well, where age and marital status of a person gives him or her certain seniority. The Koreans are simple people today with an extensive history of their ancestors. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Andrea Giordani. Mit voller Spannung und Vorfreude verkosteten wir Château Mouton Rothschild. In der Nase Cabernet-Frucht pur, Mouton-typische Cassis-Aromen! Dazu leichte Anklänge von Heidel- und Preiselbeere, Pimentos, Tabak. Enorm viel Extrakt am Gaumen. Lange, runde Tannine, wunderbar strukturiert, unglaublich vielschichtig mit traumhafter Länge. Der Block-Buster des Jahrgangs! Weinwisser: 19/20 Punkte  "Sattes Granatrubin. 2028-2050"  James Suckling: 98/100 Punkte  "This is a very shy and tight Mouton with blackberries, blackcurrants and hints of terracotta. Full body and very integrated tannins that are extremely polished and beautiful. Spicy and white-pepper finish. Sexy and exciting. So long and refined." Wine Enthusiast: 96-98/100 Punkte   "Barrel Sample. The wine develops slowly on the palate, gradually revealing its powerful tannins and solid structure. It has the classic black currant fruitiness of Cabernet Sauvignon, to match the robust, lasting tannins. This impressive wine will develop slowly with great power." Decanter: 96/100 Punkte "Vibrancy is one of the key themes of the year in the most successful properties, and this has bright, plump fruit and good depth of colour, even if it´s less concentrated than the past few vintages. The Pauillac first growths have done a great job in 2017, and it´s hard to question the depth of fruit and richness here - there´s no doubting that this is a great Mouton. Cassis and blackberry notes are delivered with precision, but there is a clear restraint that is another signature of 2017, and perhaps doesn´t reflect Mouton´s personality as much as some of its neighbours. There´s not the same weight of tannins as 2016 (around 70 IPT this year, still a high amount), but it´s a beautiful, persistent, gorgeous wine that will age gracefully. 100% new oak. (Image is the 2015 bottle; the design for the 2017 label will be revealed later)." Vinous (Neal Martin): 94-96/100 Punkte "The 2017 Mouton-Rothschild was picked from 7 to 29 September and matured in 100% new oak. This First Growth is driven by the Cabernet Sauvignon, as you would expect given the high percentage, expressive pencil lead and cedar that infuse the slightly introspective black fruit. Dare I say that it actually reminds me of Latour in style? The palate is medium-bodied, finely tuned and precise, a more masculine Mouton-Rothschild compared to the last three vintages, fresh with a sustained, lightly spiced finish that lingers in the mouth. That backbone is accentuated more during my second visit in mid-April. It is a cliché but this Mouton-Rothschild is unashamedly “classic” in style, perchance “le petit frère” of the 2010 MoutonRothschild that also contained a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon (though before you search the archives, yes, the 2011 and 2012 contained the same proportion!) Tasted twice with consistent notes.“ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: 97-99/100 Punkte "The 2017 Mouton Rothschild has one of the highest percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon ever at 90%, with 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Very deep purple-black in color, the nose is already singing of crushed black currants, warm blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of violets, star anise, cinnamon stick and cloves plus wafts of pencil lead and unsmoked cigars. Mediumbodied, wonderfully delicate yet intense in the mouth (gaining some richness in the mid-palate on my second taste two and a half weeks later), it has super fine-grained, smooth tannins and incredible freshness, finishing very long with tons of tightly wound layers. Wow. This vintage is going to be very long-lived in the cellar!“ Bitte beachten Sie die Sonderbedingungen der Subskription in unseren AGB.

Situated about 25 miles off the Tanzanian coast, Zanzibar, with its sultans and spices, merchants and mosques, dhows and doorways of richly carved timber, has captured the imagination of travelers and writers for hundreds of years. It has long evoked a romantic mystique, calling up images of an island paradise in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Its gleaming Muslim Swahili town, built of white coralline limestone, can trace approximately 1,000 years of maritime trading, and it also sustained a plantation economy based principally on slaves and cloves. Stone Town is one of the few historic trading cities from the Swahili civilization that remains a viable urban center to this day. For much of the last millennium, Zanzibar served as the center of maritime interaction and trade between Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India, and the architectural and urban heritage of the island reflects the complex fusion of these cultural spheres. By tracing the changes seen in the archaeological record, it is possible to identify the transformations that occurred in the landscape, people, and architecture of Zanzibar. The earliest known people to call Zanzibar home, the Swahili, built their iconic coral rag houses on the strategically important Shangani Peninsula. It was therefore a populated island that European traders discovered during the Age of Exploration. The main settlement in Zanzibar was Mji Mkongwe (“old town” in Swahili), better known as Stone Town. It is today but one part of the modern Zanzibar City, but it is a site that has gone through many fascinating stages of development in history. Starting as a small and nondescript fishing village, the settlement became a royal residence and commercial bazaar through a complicated network of ethnic and cultural relations. The Portuguese were especially prominent in their activities in Stone Town, though their influence declined at the close of the 17th century, when the sultans of Oman emerged as the dom ungekürzt.
