For the People offers a new interpretation of populist political movements from the Revolution to the eve of the Civil War and roots them in the disconnect between the theory of rule by the people and the reality of rule by elected representatives. Ron Formisano seeks to rescue populist movements from the distortions of contemporary opponents as well as the misunderstandings of later historians. From the Anti-Federalists to the Know-Nothings, Formisano traces the movements chronologically, contextualizing them and demonstrating the progression of ideas and movements. Although American populist movements have typically been categorized as either progressive or reactionary, left-leaning or right-leaning, Formisano argues that most populist movements exhibit liberal and illiberal tendencies simultaneously. Gendered notions of "manhood" are an enduring feature, yet women have been intimately involved in nearly every populist insurgency. By considering these movements together, Formisano identifies commonalities that belie the pattern of historical polarization and bring populist movements from the margins to the core of American history. ungekürzt. In Strange Company, a delightful collection of short essays, Jean Ryan brings us closer to the natural world. From lizards to lady bugs, from the inscrutable sloth to the resplendent quetzal, Ryan reveals some of our commonalities with earth's creatures and hints at the lessons we might learn from them. Do lizards fall in love? What do sloths think about all day? Why is the blood of a horseshoe crab so valuable? Do starlings flock for fun? Can a parrot serve as a therapist? Do turtles ever grow bored with their long lives? Why would a crow foster a kitten? Can snails be fearless? These are just a few of the questions Ryan poses in Strange Company as she invites the listener on a wild journey through land, sea and sky. While these essays acknowledge our responsibility to Mother Nature, the insights they offer are affirmative and heartening. With her precise, elegant prose, Ryan draws us into the tantalizing world of animals and their oddities. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nikiya Palombi. Handbook of Energy and Environmental Security educates the reader about the wider dimensions of the distinctive yet intertwined subjects of 'energy security and 'environmental security'. The book uniquely addresses these two increasingly important topics in a comprehensive and composite manner, describing the concepts and wider dimensions of energy- and environmental security in technological, economic, social and geopolitical perspectives. Divided into three main parts, the book deals with the subject of energy security in terms of its concepts, broader dimensions and allied issues, focuses on environmental security, and covers subjects in a cohesive manner, discussing their important interfaces and commonalities. Providing valuable scholarship for academics, researchers and analysts in the fields of energy and the environment-and using case studies to illustrate national and international levels-this is a valuable resource for energy- and environmental security challenges, especially in the areas of sustainable development and climate change.

Category theory is unmatched in its ability to organize and layer abstractions and to find commonalities between structures of all sorts. No longer the exclusive preserve of pure mathematicians, it is now proving itself to be a powerful tool in science, informatics, and industry. By facilitating communication between communities and building rigorous bridges between disparate worlds, applied category theory has the potential to be a major organizing force. This book offers a self-contained tour of applied category theory. Each chapter follows a single thread motivated by a real-world application and discussed with category-theoretic tools. We see data migration as an adjoint functor, electrical circuits in terms of monoidal categories and operads, and collaborative design via enriched profunctors. All the relevant category theory, from simple to sophisticated, is introduced in an accessible way with many examples and exercises, making this an ideal guide even for those without experience of university-level mathematics.

This book is a collection of essays that explore commonalities and contrasts between strategy in armed conflict and strategy in public health. The first part uses the asymptotic limit theorems of information and control theories to study strategy as an exchange of messages between adversaries, in the context of underlying power relations. The 'messages' to be exchanged are constructed from an 'alphabet' of tactics available to each contender, in a large sense. The second part of the book explores four case histories from this perspective, ranging across agribusiness-generated pandemics, through tuberculosis and COVID-19. The final chapter attempts a strategic synthesis applicable more specifically to public health than to the remarkably - and disturbingly -- close parallel of armed conflict. Taking a unique approach to public health tactics and strategy this volume will be of interest to social epidemiologists, public health economists, public policy scientists, as well as public health researchers and practitioners.

Can you predict killing sprees? What do mass killers have in common? Why do so many of them write manifestos online, and what do these tell us? These are some of the questions David J. Krajicek seeks to answer about mass killings, a topic that is becoming increasingly urgent and desperate. In recent decades, mass shootings worldwide have increased in their savagery and frequency.Nearly all mass killers are males, and many of them are bound together by misogyny, misanthropy, and racism. They do not just "snap". They plan their assaults for months or years, drawing up detailed battle plans and accumulating weaponry. They document the process in journals or videos online, understanding that they are leaving evidence which will help the marquee lights of their futile crimes burn brighter and longer. Krajicek shows the commonalities between mass shooters and describes the psychopathic process that leads these troubled men to commit atrocities. Mass killers feed off each other's words and deeds, and it's crucial to be able to read the signals they give out to prevent future tragedies. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Nick Landrum. This book consists of 35 letters that I wrote to my aunt while I was serving in Vietnam from October of 1967 1968. The letters contain my thoughts as a young Marine and continued through the end of my tour where I was still young but far more experienced. The letters came to me when my aunt mailed them to me 33 years after Vietnam. One of her comments was she believed that I should have the letters published. My thoughts were that they were too personal to be published and would not be of any benefit to anyone. It is my opinion now that these letters might hold some insight into the young people that are in current times serving their country. It seems we all share a lot of commonalities, and I am hopeful that men and women who are serving at this time will draw some comfort from these letters. I'm also hopeful these letters will inspire others who will face difficulties after their tours to meet the challenge of readjusting. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Billy Whisenant. At a time when America debates its values and the world braces for religious war, Bruce Feiler, author of the New York Times best sellers Walking the Bible and Abraham, travels ten thousand miles through the Middle East to examine the question: Is Religion Tearing Us Apart....Or Can it Bring Us Together? Where God Was Born combines the adventure of a wartime chronicle and an archaeological detective story with an inspiring journey of spiritual exploration. Taking readers to biblical sites not seen by Westerners for decades, it uncovers little-known details about the common roots of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and affirms the importance of the Bible in today's world. Where God Was Born observes that at the birth moment of the biblical religions, all of the faiths took from one another, exchanged ideas, recognized their commonalities, and were open to peaceful coexistence. Offering a rare vision of God that can unite different faiths into a shared allegiance of hope, this is a brave, challenging, and profound work that addresses the most important issues of our time.
