Stirring It Up , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 344min
From the beginning, Stonyfield Farm turned conventional business practices on their head and grew to become the world's largest organic-yogurt producer. What Gary Hirshberg saw early on was that organic isn't just about food. It's a way of thinking that embraces cyclical, non-linear resource use where waste from one action becomes food for another. The company has enjoyed a compounded annual growth rate of more than 26 percent for 13 straight years, while the yogurt category as a whole has grown at a much slower pace of 6-8 percent. Hirshberg shares the secrets that helped his company skyrocket to success, and argues that traditional business practices are ultimately counterproductive and have helped create many of the problems that threaten to make the world uninhabitable. Hirshberg will explain how Stonyfield's counterintuitive way of doing business demonstrates that companies can be environmentally conscious, and will prove that in doing so, they can make bigger profits than their more conventional counterparts. This book will appeal both to consumers who want quality and a better world, and companies who want steady profits and growth. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Gary Hirshberg. Woman Walking Ahead: In Search of Catherine Weldon and Sitting Bull , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 954min
This book restores a little-known advocate of Indian rights to her place in history. In June 1889 a widowed Brooklyn artist named Catherine Weldon traveled to the Standing Rock Reservation in Dakota Territory to help Sitting Bull hold on to land that the government was trying to wrest from his people. Her efforts were counterproductive; she was ordered to leave the reservation, and the Standing Rock Sioux were bullied into signing away their land. But she returned with her teenage son, settling at Sitting Bull's camp on the Grand River. In recognition of her unusual qualities, Sitting Bull's people called her Toka heya mani win, Woman Walking Ahead. Predictably, the press vilified Weldon, calling her "Sitting Bull's white squaw" and accusing her of inciting Sitting Bull to join the Ghost Dance religion then sweeping the West. In fact Weldon opposed the movement, arguing that the army would use the Ghost dance as an excuse to jail or kill Sitting Bull. Unfortunately she was right. Up to now history has distorted and largely overlooked Weldon's story. In retracing Weldon's steps, Eileen Pollack recovers her life and compares her world to our own. ungekürzt. Language: English. Under New Management: How Leading Organizations Are Upending Business as Usual , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 391min
A provocative work that challenges the traditional and widely accepted principles of business management - and proves that they are outdated, outmoded, or simply don't work. Do open floor plans really work? Are there companies that put their employees' welfare first and their clients second? Are annual performance reviews necessary? Dr. David Burkus is a highly regarded and increasingly influential business school professor who challenges many of the established principles of business management. Drawing on decades of research, Burkus has found that not only are many of our fundamental management practices wrong and misguided, but they can be downright counterproductive. These days, the best companies are breaking the old rules. At some companies, email is now restricted to certain hours, so employees can work without distraction. Netflix no longer has a standard vacation policy of two to three weeks but instructs employees to take time off when they feel they need it. And at Valve Software, there are no managers; the employees govern themselves. The revolutionary insights Burkus reveals here will convince companies to leave behind decades-old management practices and implement new ways to enhance productivity and morale. ungekürzt. Better than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 274min
Classroom management is traditionally a matter of encouraging good behavior and discouraging bad by doling out rewards and punishments. But studies show that when educators empower students to address and correct misbehavior among themselves, positive results are longer lasting and wider reaching. In Better Than Carrots or Sticks, longtime educators and best-selling authors Dominique Smith, Douglas Fisher, and Nancy Frey provide a practical blueprint for creating a cooperative and respectful classroom climate in which students and teachers work through behavioral issues together. After a comprehensive overview of the roots of the restorative practices movement in schools, the authors explain how to:Establish procedures and expectations for student behavior that encourage the development of positive interpersonal skillsDevelop a nonconfrontational rapport with even the most challenging studentsImplement conflict resolution strategies that prioritize relationship-building and mutual understanding over finger-pointing and retributionRewards and punishments may help maintain order in the short term, but they're, at best, superficially effective and, at worst, counterproductive. This audiobook will prepare teachers at all levels to ensure that their classrooms are welcoming, enriching, and constructive environments built on collective respect and focused on student achievement.PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt. Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 341min
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the Black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding Black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of Blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer Black college graduates than would otherwise exist. And so it goes with everything from soft-on-crime laws, which make Black neighborhoods more dangerous, to policies that limit school choice out of a mistaken belief that charter schools and voucher programs harm the traditional public schools that most low-income students attend. In theory these efforts are intended to help the poor - and poor minorities in particular. In practice they become massive barriers to moving forward. Please Stop Helping Us lays bare these counterproductive results. People of goodwill want to see more Black socioeconomic advancement, but in too many instances the current methods and approaches aren’t working. Acknowledging this is an important first step. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: J. D. Jackson. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/brll/006364/bk_brll_006364_sample.mp3. Oil, Illiberalism, and War: An Analysis of Energy and US Foreign Policy , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 547min
The United States is addicted to crude oil. In this book, Andrew Price-Smith argues that this addiction has distorted the conduct of American foreign policy in profound and malign ways, resulting in interventionism, exploitation, and other illiberal behaviors that hide behind a facade of liberal internationalism. The symbiotic relationship between the state and the oil industry has produced deviations from rational foreign energy policy, including interventions in Iraq and elsewhere that have been (at the very least) counterproductive or (at worst) completely antithetical to national interests. Liberal internationalism casts the United States as a benign hegemon, guaranteeing security to its allies during the Cold War and helping to establish collaborative international institutions. Price-Smith contends that the "free market" in international oil is largely a myth, rendered problematic by energy statism and the rise of national oil companies. He illustrates the destabilizing effect of oil in the Persian Gulf, and describes the United States' grand energy strategy, particularly in the Persian Gulf, as illiberal at its core, focused on the projection of power and on periodic bouts of violence. Washington's perennial oscillation between liberal phases of institution building and provision of public goods and illiberal bellicosity, Price-Smith argues, represents the shadow liberalism that is at the core of US foreign policy. ungekürzt.
