At midday on May 4, 1970, after three days of protests, several thousand students and the Ohio National Guard faced off at opposite ends of the grassy campus commons at Kent State University. At noon, the Guard moved out. Twenty-four minutes later, Guardsmen launched a 13-second, 67-shot barrage that left four students dead and nine wounded, one paralyzed for life. The story doesn't end there, though. A horror of far greater proportions was narrowly averted minutes later when the Guard and students reassembled on the commons. The Kent State shootings were both unavoidable and preventable: unavoidable in that all the discordant forces of a turbulent decade flowed together on May 4, 1970, on one Ohio campus; preventable in that every party to the tragedy made the wrong choices at the wrong time in the wrong place. Using the university's recently available oral-history collection supplemented by extensive new interviewing, Means tells the story of this iconic American moment through the eyes and memories of those who were there, and skillfully situates it in the context of a tumultuous era. ungekürzt. Pliny the Younger (61 CE-c. 113 CE) was a well-connected official in the Rome of the first century, and it is through his ten Books of Letters that we have one of the liveliest and most informal pictures of the period. As a lawyer and magistrate, he rose through the senate to become consul in AD 100 and therefore corresponded with leading figures including the historian Tacitus, the biographer Suetonius, the philosophers Artemidorus and Euphrates the Stoic and, most notably, Emperor Trajan. The letters which flowed between Trajan and Pliny in the last decade of his life form Book X and are a remarkable glimpse into the relationship an emperor would have with an ‘imperial magistrate’. The letters are particularly well known because they touch upon key topics of the time. These include the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (in which Pliny’s uncle, Pliny the Elder, died) and his interaction with the early Christians, but Pliny also gives accounts of or comments on political events, trials, and social and domestic issues. These letters effectively allow us to meet and listen to a significant Roman of the time. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Leighton Pugh. This is the 2nd book in a series of Pulp Noir. The rich history of Pulp stories are pure Americana. Written like a script from Film Noir movie, you are to be transported to a time in the 30's, 40's or 50's, where the liquor flowed freely and there was always a Crosley radio playing in some room off in the distance. The stories don't always end on a high note, or even end at all. The magic of a Pulp Noir short story is that the listener is supposed to wonder what comes next. After the last word on the page, the story for the characters moves on long after the final sentence. Unless the character is lying face down in a pool of blood or off to the clink. The listener is to guess as to what happens next and what came before.Pulp Noir is more about a small slice or life, a moment in time, and usually a dark one. So please enjoy. Pour yourself a nice warm drink, dim the lights...conjure up in your consciousness; Femme Fatales, handguns, seedy bars, bad luck, thieves, scoundrels, a book of matches, a pack of Pall Mall's, low lighting, and definitely everything in glorious black and white. ungekürzt. The first crusade of 1096 unleashed a wave of impassioned, personally felt, deeply pious Christian fury that was expressed in a mass movement centered in France and spreading to other European kingdoms, including Flanders, German speaking principalities, and Italy. Master historian Harold Lamb tells the incredible story of how Pope Urban II fanned the sparks of Christian anger into a mighty conflagration of righteous indignation with his speech of 1095 in Clermont. It was a speech that would occupy the hearts and minds of Europeans for over 200 years. Tens of thousands of peasants, both men and women, simply left their fields and workshops and joined knights and monks on a journey to take back holy Jerusalem from the infidel Muslims. A river of humanity, often hostile and destructive, flowed across Europe and into Byzantium and Asia. Led by baronial leaders like Godfrey of Bouillon, Baldwin of Flanders, Raymond of Toulouse, Robert of Normandy, and the mighty Bohemond of Taranto, their confrontation with Islamic armies would soon follow. The results of those armed clashes produced some of the most amazing stories you will ever hear. Be sure to listen to Volume 2 in this series by Harold Lamb: The Flame of Islam. ungekürzt. The power and the beauty of The Iliad resound again across 2,700 years in Stephen Mitchell's exciting new translation, as if the lifeblood of its heroes Achilles and Patroclus, Hector and Priam flowed in every word. And we are there with them amid the horror and ecstasy of war, carried along by a poetry that lifts even the most devastating human events into the realm of the beautiful. Based on the recent, superb M.L. West edition of the Greek, this Iliad is more accessible and moving than any previous version. Whether it is his exciting recent version of Gilgamesh, with more than 150,000 copies sold, or his unmatched translation of the poet Rilke, still the standard after 29 years, or his Tao Te Ching, which has sold more than 900,000 copies and has itself been translated into six languages, Stephen Mitchell's books are international sensations. Now, thanks to his scholarship and poetic power, which re-creates the energy and simplicity, the speed, grace, and continual thrust and pull of the original, The Iliad's ancient story bursts vividly into new life and will reach an even larger audience of listeners. Please note: Book 10, recognized since ancient times as a later addition to the Iliad, has been omitted in this translation. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Alfred Molina. Even Sinners Have Souls, edited by E.N. Joy, features Noire, Chunichi, Kashamba Williams, B.L.U.N.T. and Nikki Turner. These respected authorities have all come together for the first time ever, taking a break from penning their norm, to pen a piece of work that truly flowed from their spirits. In Even Sinners Have Souls, each gritty and profound story is told in a raw and real voice, luring the listeners in by the poignant story lines, themes, and the genuine talents and abilities of each of these prolific authors. The stories have characters who face the same struggles and tragedies that any other person growing up in the hood might endure, but what makes these stories phenomenal is the fact that although the characters might be living a dangerous, immoral, and unacceptable lifestyle according to society's standards, they are not so far gone that they can't acknowledge the power of a higher being and a life-changing moment that could alter their lives forever. Be prepared to be engaged, moved, and compelled as in each tale you will see a side to these authors that you have never seen before. Do not expect what you are used to getting from these authors. Expect the unexpected. Expect more! ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: AdriAnne Bell Everett. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/061526/bk_acx0_061526_sample.mp3. Henry Thomas Hamblin was born at Walworth, London in 1873. Born into a poor family, he was determined to emerge from the rut which everyone was destined to fall into without being able to afford proper school and training. After a difficult start working in various jobs and being in debt he decided to become an Optician. Despite lack of money and poor prospects, his determination won him through and he qualified. Known then as the famous Optician, Theodore Hamblin was founder of the well-known shop in Wigmore Street. He was first and foremost a successful business man. But far from making him happy, his success gave him a growing sense of depression. It was as if something lay inside him that had not yet found a voice. All through his life Hamblin had experienced visionary experiences where he came in contact with a Divine Presence: "...It is not possible to describe such an experience," he wrote. "All care, anxiety, and fear vanished, and I felt that I was cradled in Divine Love.... The deep peace of the Eternal flowed through me like a river; yet at the same time it was as though I was being carried along on a stream of Divine Bliss..." ungekürzt. Language: English. On the planet Tython, the ancient Je’daii order was founded. And at the feet of its wise Masters, Lanoree Brock learned the mysteries and methods of the Force - and found her calling as one of its most powerful disciples. But as strongly as the Force flowed within Lanoree and her parents, it remained absent in her brother, who grew to despise and shun the Je’daii, and whose training in its ancient ways ended in tragedy. Now, from her solitary life as a Ranger keeping order across the galaxy, Lanoree has been summoned by the Je’daii Council on a matter of utmost urgency. The leader of a fanatical cult, obsessed with traveling beyond the reaches of known space, is bent on opening a cosmic gateway using dreaded dark matter as the key - risking a cataclysmic reaction that will consume the entire star system. But more shocking to Lanoree than even the prospect of total galactic annihilation, is the decision of her Je’daii Masters to task her with the mission of preventing it. Until a staggering revelation makes clear why she was chosen: The brilliant, dangerous madman she must track down and stop at any cost is the brother whose death she has long grieved - and whose life she must now fear. ungekürzt. A story of tragedy, triumph and romance in the Australian bush - the story of Sam and Jenny Bailey. Sam Bailey wanted a life on the land, just like his father. He had it all planned - he'd finish his education, have a few years in the big wide world, and then return home to take the reins from his dad, get married, and raise a family - his own version of the Australian dream. But when the car Sam was travelling in overturned on a lonely country road one Sunday afternoon, leaving him a quadraplegic, Sam discovered that in a split second your life can change forever, in ways that you had never imagined. Head over Heels is more than the story of how Sam conquered his disability through sheer tenacity and the unstinting support of family, friends, and doctors. It is a captivating romance. The day Sam met Jenny, an ABC rural journalist, he discovered love can come from the most unexpected places and overcome all boundaries. His marriage proposal to her "live" on ABC Radio moved thousands of listeners. The phones jammed and the fax machine ran out of paper as the congratulations flowed in. Head over Heels is a reminder to us all that when you love life, nothing is impossible. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William McInnes. Experience salvation, healing, and deliverance in every area of your life. For too long, the popular understanding of Christian salvation has been limited to securing a place in heaven. Sadly, many Christ-followers experience constant defeat during their time on Earth. Something is missing. The biblical concept of salvation comes from the Greek word "Sozo" and has a holistic implication. Power and victory flowed through the New Testament Church because the early Christians understood how to live out their salvation in a way that impacted every area of their lives - spirit, soul, and body. In SOZO, Dawna DeSilva and Teresa Liebscher provide revelatory teaching and miraculous testimonies that paint a stunning picture of how to experience Heaven's freedom in every area of your life. You will receive: Practical tools to deepen your relationship with the Triune God - Father God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit. Victory strategies to help you disarm lies, break harmful patterns, shift spiritual atmospheres, and access the often-unreached realms of abundant life. Keys to experience inner healing by breaking addictions, overcoming obstacles, and walking in sustained deliverance. Salvation is not simply a ticket to Heaven. It is abundant life that begins now...and continues forever. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ruby Rivers. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/072154/bk_acx0_072154_sample.mp3.
