Kat has survived. She returns to Athelia as herself, Katherine Wilson. Edward, elated at learning she is alive, vows to bring her back to the palace. The obstacles, however, seem impossible to overcome. Marriage between a royal and a commoner is not recognized, not to mention that he is already legally bound to Katriona Bradshaw, who will do anything to keep her position as princess. And there's even more to worry about. Due to an uncommonly harsh winter, the people of Athelia have been suffering from inflated food prices, and are getting irritated at supporting the small, elite group of aristocrats. An uprising in a neighboring country only adds fuel to the fire. Can Kat and Edward finally get a happily-ever-after? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Luci Christian. First published in 1752, "Micromegas" is one of Voltaire’s best-known works. It is a tale of mordant irony, and actually the original science-fiction short story. Arriving on Earth from the star Sirius, the gigantic explorer Micromegas discovers the people of Earth, so small compared to him that he first believes that no creature this size can hope to achieve any degree of intelligence; he will soon discover the ways and thoughts of these diminutive people, who clearly have an over-inflated idea of their own importance in the universe. Voltaire's extrapolations of sun-powered interstellar flight, alien civilizations, and the two moons of Mars, are designed to make us see ourselves in a new light and laugh at what we find. This week on Car Talk, Darlene's bumpy road-trip prompts Ray to remember his explosive lesson about the dangers of over-inflated tires. Elsewhere, Cynthia hopes Tom and Ray can settle her brothers' tug-of-war over a vintage Camaro, but it's more likely they’ll just add a Magliozzi family feud to the mix. Also, Bill's steering wheel is re-enacting "Ghostbusters" by oozing an odd substance; Marsha's wondering if adding oil to her coolant is the end of the world, or at least the end of her Previa; and on Stump the Chumps, we find out if marriage cured Ellen's fiance of his high-performance add-on addiction. All this, plus the return of the Puzzler, and lots more, this week on Car Talk. [Broadcast Date: September 13, 2014] Language: English. Narrator: Tom Magliozzi, Ray Magliozzi. This week on The Best of Car Talk, Richie tried to save money on oil changes by installing a dual-filtration system on his truck. The resulting acrid smoke seems to prove Tom and Ray’s mantra that, “It’s the stingy man who pays the most.” Elsewhere, Mare’s husband accidentally inflated their tires to 90 PSI. Should Mare get rid of the tires, or her husband? Also, Scott’s beloved “Uncle Know-it-All" gave him some questionable transmission advice, so he’s turning to two Know-Nothings; John’s trying to slow down his lead-foot son by putting blocks of wood under the gas pedal; and did you know that William Shakespeare was Italian? Neither did we, but Tom and Ray seem to think he was. There’s much ado about a whole lot of nothing, this week on The Best of Car Talk. [Broadcast Date: April 4, 2015] Language: English. The youngest soldier who fought in the Great War is believed to have been just 12 years old. Many thousands of other boys are known to have faked eye tests, inflated their small chests and stood on tiptoes to bluff their way into a war of unforeseen horror. How and why so many under-aged boys were able to get to the battlefields is a complex mystery of World War I, and until Richard van Emden's classic account, largely unexplored. Boy Soldiers of the Great War tells for the first time the incredible stories of the boys who went to fight for their country. Richard van Emden, having amassed a unique collection of personal testimonies and hitherto unpublished diaries and letters, brings to life their stories of heroism and sacrifice. There are many honest and highly ethical people in businesses, and public offices, including those in the newspaper industry but honesty can only maintain an upper-hand when accountability for potential dishonestly remains in place and is practiced when necessary. I also feel that the type practices I describe in the chapters of this audiobook, that I witnessed first-hand as a contract newspaper distributor, including illegitimate methods for increasing circulation by some newspaper companies, is far more common than the general public may realize. This also means that the cost of advertising being purchased from these newspapers, by businesses and consumers is sometimes illegitimately inflated by dishonest companies, based on false circulation numbers. Could it be that this is possibly one of the reasons for the continuing downfall of printed newspapers, with honest ones suffering, along with the dishonest ones? ungekürzt. Language: English. In today's world, considerable time and effort is devoted to appearance, both for individuals and organizations; the right look, an impressive title, a favourable connection. The focus is on the surface, with considerations of substance often overlooked. In this book, Mats Alvesson demystifies some popular and upbeat claims about a range of phenomena, including the knowledge society, consumption, branding, higher education, organizational change, professionalization, and leadership. He contends that a culture of 'grandiosity' is leading to numerous inflated claims. We no longer talk about plans but 'strategies'. Supervisors have been replaced by 'managers', and managers are referred to as 'executives'. Management itself is about 'leadership'. Giving advice is 'coaching'. Companies become 'knowledge-intensive firms'. This book views the contemporary economy as an economy of persuasion, where firms and other institutions increasingly assign talent, energy, and resources to rhetoric, image, branding, reputation, and visibility. This second edition uses a wide range of empirical examples to illuminate the realms of consumption, higher education, organization, and leadership in the 21st century. Exploring new areas such as strategic management in higher education, title inflation, and the increasing imbalance between knowledge, manual, and care work, this provocative and engaging book challenges established assumptions and contributes to a critical understanding of society as a whole.
