In-between territories is a collection of 131 photographs, most of them previously unpublished, produced by Gabriele Basilico over the course of his career, from the late 1980s up to the first decade of the 2000s and beyond. The book, edited by Filippo Maggia, approaches the extensive artistic body of work left by this Milanese photographer from an angle that has received little consideration until now. Basilico's in-between territories are physical spaces and seem almost tangi ble to the gaze, but they are also mental spaces, induced in the observer by the voids, the absences determined by pauses and silences in the visual construction of the image. The depth of the light and the choice of perspective adopted by Basilico help to deter mine the equilibrium of shape between the volumes, inducing the right interpretation of the image, through that act of suspension and contemplation that the photographer often emphasized as a fundamental moment in observing the landscape, of whatever kind it may be and however it presents itself.

George Plimpton makes his riskiest foray into participatory journalism - stepping into the ring against a champion boxer - in Shadow Box, now including never-before-heard content from the Plimpton archives. Stepping into the ring against light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore, George Plimpton pauses to wonder what ever induced him to become a participatory journalist. Bloodied but unbowed, he holds his own in the bout - and lives to tell in this timeless book on boxing and its devotees, among them Ali, Joe Frazier, Ernest Hemingway, and Norman Mailer. Shadow Box is one of Plimpton's most engaging studies of professional sport, told through the eyes of an inquisitive and astute amateur. From the gym, from the locker room, ringside, and even in the harsh glare of the ring itself, Plimpton documents what it is like to be a boxer, an artist of mayhem. It is 1979 and hapless accountant Arthur and his wife, Gwen, have made a new friend. Flashy novelist Reeve is everything they're not - carefree, charismatic, and seemingly irresistible. At first, his friendship seems to offer an enticing window into a world beyond their cloistered suburban existence, but it doesn't take long for the relationship to slip into rather more sinister territory. From the moment Reeve arrives on the scene, it's clear that Arthur and Gwen don't stand a chance, and it's this festering inevitability, lurking in awkward pauses and fidgety middle-class tics, that gives this play its most haunting moments. Dramatised by Mike Walker from a short story by Ruth Rendell. Starring Reece Shearsmith as Arthur, Laura Pyper as Gwen and Michael Maloney as Reeve. Other parts are played by Rachel Atkins and David Holt. Sound Design: Steve Bond. Directed by John Dryden. A Goldhawk Production for BBC Radio 4. Language: English. Narrator: Michael Maloney. A Village Life, Louise Gluck's eleventh collection of poems, begins in the topography of a village, a Mediterranean world of no definite moment or place:All the roads in the village unite at the fountain.Avenue of Liberty, Avenue of the Acacia Trees-The fountain rises at the center of the plaza;on sunny days, rainbows in the piss of the cherub.-from "tributaries"Around the fountain are concentric circles of figures, organized by age and in degrees of distance: fields, a river, and, like the fountain's opposite, a mountain. Human time superimposed on geologic time, all taken in at a glance, without any undue sensation of speed.Gluck has been known as a lyrical and dramatic poet; since Ararat, she has shaped her austere intensities into book-length sequences. Here, for the first time, she speaks as "the type of describing, supervising intelligence found in novels rather than poetry," as Langdon Hammer has written of her long lines-expansive, fluent, and full-manifesting a calm omniscience. While Gluck's manner is novelistic, she focuses not on action but on pauses and intervals, moments of suspension (rather than suspense), in a dreamlike present tense in which poetic speculation and reflection are possible.

Knowing the U.S. presidents and their terms in office, and the sequence in which they served, is immensely helpful as a framework for studying and being informed about American history. After a brief introduction, Track 1 lists the presidents and lets you match them up by term in office; the narrator says each president's name and pauses a few seconds for you to say the term of office. Track 2 does the reverse, letting you test yourself on the term in office and then the name of that president. Track 3 names the presidents and lets you say the vice president (or vice presidents) that served under them. The next section provides a series of tracks that cover nine groupings of presidents with brief details about each one: Founding Fathers; Westerner and Maintainers; Civil War and Aftermath; Gilded Age; Return to Greatness; the Under-rateds; America Joins the World; Return of the Optimists; and the Skeptic. Perfect for students, people interested in history and geography, and listeners in general interested in becoming better informed. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Deaver Brown.
