Das neue Album des japanischen Pianist und Komponist Ryuichi Sakamoto klingt paradoxerweise zugleich sehr vertraut und dennoch vollkommen neu. Denn zum einen knüpft Sakamoto auf "Three" mit dem brasilianischen Cellisten Jaques Morelenbaum und der jungen kanadischen Violinistin Judy Kang an sein 1996 aufgenommenes Trio-Album "1996" an, auf dem er schon einmal einige der hier zu hörenden Nummern ("The Last Emperor", "Bibo No Aozora", "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" und "High Heels") gespielt hatte. Zum anderen aber wählte er nun einen vollkommen anderen Interpretationsansatz. Während "1996" von einer fast schon lateinamerikanischen Leichtigkeit und unverhohlenem Romantizismus geprägt war, dominieren auf "Three" eine gewisse klassische Formstrenge und langsamere Tempi. Die beiden Streicher spielen mit weniger Vibrato und Sakamoto selbst setzt das Dämpferpedal seines Klaviers seltener ein. Das neue Trio spielt mit einer scheinbaren Zurückhaltung und Bescheidenheit, die ihm aber in Wirklichkeit viel abverlangt. Das Resultat sind zutiefst anrührende Interpretationen, die unter die Haut gehen und noch lange im inneren Ohr nachklingen.- Shop: odax

New Decade
Die berühmte japanische Avant-Garde Künstlerin Phew kehrt für ihr kommendes Album New Decade zu Mute zurück. Bei den sechs Tracks des Albums arbeitet sie ausschließlich mit Stimme und elektronischen Elementen und beweist einmal mehr, dass sie eine absolute Expertin ihrer Kunst ist. Pitchfork beschrieb sie als eine japanische Untergrund Legende. Phew war Gründungsmitglied der Punk Band Aunt Sally aus Osaka, die sich 1980 auflöste. Seit sie als Solokünstlerin unterwegs ist, hat sie unter anderem mit Lichtgestalten wie Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jim ORourke, Ana da Silva (The Raincoats), Seiichi Yamamomoto (Boredoms) und Holger Czukay (Can) zusammen gearbeitet. Am ersten Mute Album von Phew aus dem Jahr 1992 waren Hacke (Hackedepicciotto, Einstürzende Neubauten), Jaki Liebzeit (Can) und Chrislo Haas (Crime & the City Solution, DAF, Liaisons Dangereuses) beteiligt.- Shop: odax

So muss es nicht überraschen, dass nach dem Quintett, das »Fieldtone« (2015) eingespielt hat, für »Vvolk« insgesamt 18 Musiker genannt werden, die zu diesem ruhigen Fluss an scheinbar ereignislosem Klingen beigetragen haben. Die fünf Interpreten des Debüts sind erneut vertreten, und wieder zeichnet der Schlagzeuger Stijn Cools als Komponist verantwortlich. Eine gewisse Kontinuität ist mithin vorhanden, auch bei der ruhigen Gesamtstimmung hat man es belassen. Doch selbst wenn viele der Beteiligten aus Jazz und Klassik kommen, klingt »Vvolk« nach keinem von beiden. »Handgemachter Ambient« trifft es besser. Dead or Alive Trilogy
Beginning with an explosive, six-minute montage of sex, drugs and violence, and ending with a phallus-headed battle robot taking flight, Takashi Miike's unforgettable Dead or Alive Trilogy features many of the director's most outrageous moments set alongside some of his most dramatically moving scenes. Made between 1999 and 2002, the Dead or Alive films cemented Miike's reputation overseas as one of the most provocative enfants terrible of Japanese cinema, yet also one of it's most talented and innovative filmmakers. In Dead or Alive, tough gangster Ryuichi (Riki Takeuchi) and his ethnically Chinese gang make a play to take over the drug trade in Tokyo's Shinjuku district by massacring the competition. But he meets his match in detective Jojima (Show Aikawa), who will do everything to stop them. Dead or Alive 2: Birds casts Aikawa and Takeuchi together again, but as new characters, a pair of rival yakuza assassins who turn out to be childhood friends, after a botched hit, they flee together to the island where they grew up, and decide to devote their deadly skills to a more humanitarian cause. And in Dead or Alive: Final, Takeuchi and Aikawa are catapulted into a future Yokohama ruled by multilingual gangs and cyborg soldiers, where they once again butt heads in the action-packed and cyberpunk-tinged finale to the trilogy.- Shop: odax

Experience of the Unknown
George Yohng is a pianist, composer and singer based in Vienna, Austria. His musical style aims at elegance, naturalness and harmony. George Yohng cites as main artistic influences Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Claude Debussy, York Bowen, and Joe Hisaishi. His most notable piano compositions to date are "Feeling Worth Living for," "Morning Rain," and "Experience of the Unknown," all of which are available on the album "Experience of the Unknown". The artist writes of his inspiration for composition: "How can you experience the imperceptible? It is like seeing the invisible. My music is an attempt to express the feeling of something new, energetic, dynamic, yet very deep and familiar, which is impossible to describe or feel with our immediate senses. It is my aim to create art that is nourishing and fulfilling, yet 'environmentally friendly' to human senses, soul and mind". As well as being an accomplished singer and a piano player, George Yohng holds a BS degree in Computer Science and earns his living designing software virtual musical instruments and professional audio packages.
