The Union's Capture of New Orleans During the Civil War: The Campaign for the Confederacy's Most Important Mississippi River Stronghold , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 91min
As the officers and soldiers of the United States have been subject to repeated insults from the women (calling themselves ladies) of New Orleans in return for the most scrupulous non-interference and courtesy on our part, it is ordered that hereafter when any female shall by word, gesture, or movement insult or show contempt for any officer or soldier of the United States she shall be regarded and held liable to be treated as a woman of the town plying her avocation. - Benjamin Butler's General Order No. 28 In 1860, New Orleans was just as unique a city as it is today. It was racially and linguistically diverse, with many French, German, and Spanish speakers, and a population of white, black, and mixed-race inhabitants. Louisiana's population was 47% slave and also had one of the largest numbers of free blacks in the country. Situated near the mouth of the continent's largest river, the Mississippi, it was an international center for trade and industry. New Orleans was the sixth largest city in the country and the largest in any of the states that would end up joining the Confederacy. The volume of trade through its port was second only to New York, and the city's commercial ties with England and Spain and cultural ties with France meant that the European powers would be looking closely at how the city fared in the Civil War, especially after it was occupied by Union forces. The Lincoln administration, fearful of European meddling in the war effort, had to constantly keep European opinion in mind when dealing with the captured city, and the story of New Orleans in the Civil War is one of far-reaching political, racial, and social tensions. ungekürzt. Luke and Acts: To the Lovers of God: The Passion Translation , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 394min
The book of Luke is a glorious gospel penned by one of the early followers of Jesus. It has been described as the loveliest book ever written giving us a very full picture of the life and ministry of Jesus. Luke applied scrupulous accuracy to all he wrote, to ensure that what we hear is factual. Being a physician, Luke learned early on the need to exhibit compassion and mercy toward others. This gospel is perhaps the most compassionate, love-filled account of the life of Jesus. Luke provides us with rich details of Jesus' love of children, the forsaken, and his ministry to women even though this was controversial in the culture of his day. Luke shares Jesus' teachings on prayer, forgiveness, and our obligation to demonstrate mercy and grace in dealings with others. The book of Acts, also written by Luke, takes up the story where the book of Luke leaves off. It provides us with the startling details of the birth of the church and the early years of expanding the kingdom of God on earth. It begins in the upper room with 120 disciples and explains the explosive outpouring of the holy spirit resulting in tongues, prophecy, miracles, salvation, and the birthing of countless churches. Acts provides us with the story of Paul's three missionary journeys, illustrating the spread of the gospel, the addition of new believers, miraculous answers to prayer, signs and wonders and deliverance. God is working in power today through his yielded lovers. This inspired account of church history awakens our souls with transforming power and gives us courage to be witnesses for Christ wherever he sends us! ungekürzt. Language: English. Mordecai Lincoln - Book 2 - Santa Anna's Leg , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 336min
1840s, action-packed adventure, with a goodly dollop of humor and romance. Fact: In the spring of 1840, a hodge-podge "army" of not very scrupulous mountain men, Mexican bandidos, and 200 Ute Indian warriors, swept down on Mexico's, Alta California. In the vicinity of El Pueblo de Los Angeles, these "brigands" gathered up and drove away, some three to five thousand prime-quality horses and mules! Little more is recorded of this event, and all sources vary wildly concerning the specifics. The following is the frolicsome fleshed-out fable of that raid, and of the unforeseen repercussions it precipitated for the destinies of three nations - Mexico, the USA, and Great Britain. The real-life players include: crusty, eccentric, Old Bill Williams, and fellow conspirator, Tom (Peg-leg) Smith, the mountain men who conceived and organized the raid, Ute Chief Walkara, who's braves did most of the dirty-work, plus "that stellar scoundrel" Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, President of Mexico, who had come north to quash the fires of California rebellion, using his usual methods of blunt force, summary trial, and instant execution. Our three "heroes" - Parson Mordecai Lincoln, mountain man Ben Hammond, and the ex-slave, Euripides - are sucked into these momentous events by merest chance. Along the way they encounter various intriguing characters in one too-close-to-call "mishap" after another. Vengeful Navajos and Comancheros, mission padres with an ax to grind, a seditious Don and his fiery daughter, American, British, and Mexican warships on hair trigger, and Mordecai's life-long nemeses - those notorious Maddox brothers - reborn! All contrive to keep "things" really popping. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Wayne Hughes. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/093373/bk_acx0_093373_sample.mp3. The Man Who Loved China , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 551min
In sumptuous and illuminating detail, Simon Winchester, the best-selling author of The Professor and the Madman ("Elegant and scrupulous" - New York Times Book Review) and Krakatoa ("A mesmerizing page-turner" - Time) brings to life the extraordinary story of Joseph Needham, the brilliant Cambridge scientist who unlocked the most closely held secrets of China, long the world's most technologically advanced country. No cloistered don, this tall, married Englishman was a freethinking intellectual, who practiced nudism and was devoted to a quirky brand of folk dancing. In 1937, while working as a biochemist at Cambridge University, he instantly fell in love with a visiting Chinese student, with whom he began a lifelong affair. He soon became fascinated with China, and his mistress swiftly persuaded the ever-enthusiastic Needham to travel to her home country, where he embarked on a series of extraordinary expeditions to the farthest frontiers of this ancient empire. He searched everywhere for evidence to bolster his conviction that the Chinese were responsible for hundreds of mankind's most familiar innovations - including printing, the compass, explosives, suspension bridges, even toilet paper - often centuries before the rest of the world. His thrilling and dangerous journeys, vividly recreated by Winchester, took him across war-torn China to far-flung outposts, consolidating his deep admiration for the Chinese people. After the war, Needham was determined to tell the world what he had discovered, and began writing his majestic Science and Civilisation in China, describing the country's long and astonishing history of invention and technology. By the time he died, he had produced, essentially single-handedly, 17 immense volumes, marking him as the greatest one-man encyclopedist ever. Both epic and intimate, The Man Who Loved China tells the sweeping story of China through Needham's remarkable life. Firebrand , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 205min
In 1855 the westward expansion of slavery was all but assured. Pro-slavery forces had swarmed the newly-opened territory of Kansas and packed its legislature. They had the support of all three branches of the federal government and the Army. Yet within two years, a ragtag free-state militia, led by a wild-eyed crusader named John Brown, scored a series of tactical victories that helped turn the tide in Kansas - while putting America on the path to civil war. Of all the men in Brown's army, one stands out: the young Jewish immigrant August Bondi, a freedom fighter since the age of 14. With a scrupulous eye toward history, author Aaron Barnhart brings this remarkable story to life and shows how a young man's conscience, like John Brown's broadsword, can cut both ways. From Vienna's barricades to bleeding Kansas to the Civil War, August Bondi was continuously engaged in the struggle for freedom for half of his young adult life. As an old man, he wrote down what he remembered, and author Aaron Barnhart closely followed Bondi's autobiography in writing Firebrand. Barnhart also drew upon the 1958 novel Border Hawk: August Bondi, by children's author Lloyd Alexander (winner of the Newbery Medal and National Book Award), to bring Bondi's story back to life. The story begins in 1848. The Bondi family is leaving for a better life in America. But 15-year-old Anschl doesn't want to go. He's found his life's purpose in Vienna, fighting on the barricades against a tyrant king. In America, Anschl tries to put his past behind him, changing his name to August and seeking adventure aboard a Texas riverboat. But there is a new tyranny in his adopted land called slavery, and its presence all around him rekindles the fire in the young freedom fighter. It leads him to Kansas Territory and the adventure of his life alongside the notorious abolitionist John Brown. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Aaron Barnhart. Strangers on a Bridge: The Case of Colonel Abel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 823min
Originally published in 1964, this is the "enthralling...truly remarkable" (The New York Times Book Review) insider account of the Cold War spy exchange that is now the subject of the major motion picture Bridge of Spies by Steven Spielberg, starring Tom Hanks - with a new foreword by Jason Matthews, New York Times best-selling author of Red Sparrow and Palace of Treason. In the early morning of February 10, 1962, James B. Donovan began his walk toward the center of the Glienicke Bridge, the famous "Bridge of Spies" that then linked West Berlin to East. With him walked Rudolf Ivanovich Abel, master spy and for years the chief of Soviet espionage in the United States. Approaching them from the other side, under equally heavy guard, was Francis Gary Powers, the American U-2 spy plane pilot famously shot down by the Soviets, whose exchange for Abel Donovan had negotiated. These were the strangers on a bridge, men of East and West, representatives of two opposed worlds meeting in a moment of high drama. Abel was the most gifted, the most mysterious, the most effective spy in his time. His trial, which began in a Brooklyn United States District Court and ended in the Supreme Court of the United States, chillingly revealed the methods and successes of Soviet espionage. No one was better equipped to tell the whole absorbing history than James B. Donovan, who was appointed to defend one of his country's enemies and did so with scrupulous skill. In Strangers on a Bridge, the lead prosecutor in the Nuremburg Trials offers a clear-eyed and fast-paced memoir that is part procedural drama, part dark character study, and plays like a noirish espionage thriller. From the first interview with Abel to the exchange on the bridge in Berlin, here is an important historical narrative that is "as fascinating as it is exciting" (The Houston Chronicle). ungekürzt. Six Encounters with Lincoln: A President Confronts Democracy and Its Demons , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 1055min
From an award-winning historian, an engrossing look at how Abraham Lincoln grappled with the challenges of leadership in an unruly democracy. An awkward first meeting with US Army officers, on the eve of the Civil War. A conversation on the White House portico with a young cavalry sergeant who was a fiercely dedicated abolitionist. A tense exchange on a navy ship with a Confederate editor and businessman. In this eye-opening book, Elizabeth Brown Pryor examines six intriguing, mostly unknown encounters that Abraham Lincoln had with his constituents. Taken together, they reveal his character and opinions in unexpected ways, illustrating his difficulties in managing a republic and creating a presidency. Pryor probes both the political demons that Lincoln battled in his ambitious exercise of power and the demons that arose from the very nature of democracy itself: the clamorous diversity of the populace, with its outspoken demands. She explores the trouble Lincoln sometimes had in communicating and in juggling the multiple concerns that make up being a political leader; how conflicted he was over the problem of emancipation; and the misperceptions Lincoln and the South held about each other. Pryor also provides a fascinating discussion of Lincoln's fondness for storytelling and how he used his skills as a raconteur to enhance both his personal and political power. Based on scrupulous research that draws on hundreds of eyewitness letters, diaries, and newspaper excerpts, Six Encounters with Lincoln offers a fresh portrait of Lincoln as the beleaguered politician who was not especially popular with the people he needed to govern with, and who had to deal with the many critics, naysayers, and dilemmas he faced without always knowing the right answer. What it shows most clearly is that greatness was not simply laid on Lincoln's shoulders like a mantle, but was won in fits and starts. ungekürzt. Language: English.
