A Mind That Found Itself: The Complete Work Plus an Overview, Summary, Analysis and Author Biography , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 407min
The success of an autobiography can be measured by many different aspects. Some works are of merit for entertainment purposes alone. Many Hollywood celebrities find an audience for their life's story due to their willingness to share closely held secrets and peculiarities. We are drawn in because of the salacious promise of a glimpse into a life more glamorous or unusual than our own. There are autobiographies that are written in order to record a person's contributions to fields such as science or politics. Still, more find their way into publication in order to tell an inspiring story, to uplift, to stand as an example to humanity of the limitless potential of the human spirit and our ability to overcome adversity. Clifford Whittingham Beers' A Mind that Found Itself - An Autobiography, fulfills all of these goals and yet achieves a much higher purpose. Beers records his personal journey to a place that few will ever visit, and far fewer will ever return. Beers' personal, detailed account of his descent into insanity, his two-year journey within public and private institutions, and his unusual recovery and mission afterward elevates this to much more than an autobiography. Beers' story invites us to see both the enormous shortcomings of the mental institutions of his time, but also the inner workings of his mind as he lost his grip on reality. Early in his institutional experiences, he vows to explore every ward and record every injustice. Despite Beers' own acknowledgement of his loss of reason, he maintained enough direction to willfully contrive situations that would get him committed to wards with more advanced levels of security for patients deemed violent. He did this deliberately, for the purpose of his research. This autobiography, published when Beers emerged from his institutional life, led to a revolution in an understanding of insanity and the way the insane are treated in the United States. ungekürzt. The CSS Hunley: The History and Mystery of the Civil War's Most Famous Submarine , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 75min
After a year of independence, the government and people of the Confederacy were beginning to worry. During their first year after seceding from the United States, everything had gone well. In 1861 and early 1862 the rebel army enjoyed success after success, and the initial optimism of those in the North who thought the rebels could be defeated in a few months had settled into the grim acknowledgement that the war would take years and cost many thousands of lives. Now things were turning against the South. It had lost ground in the west, and more seriously its economy was being strangled by a Union naval blockade on its ports. At the beginning of the war, Union General Winfield Scott had rightly seen that one of the Union’s greatest advantages was that it had far more warships. He introduced the Anaconda Plan, in which the Navy encircled the Confederacy like a vast snake, blocking every port and major river and cutting it off from the outside world. The Confederate Navy tried to fight off the blockade but was seriously outgunned. Confederate blockade runners, independent operators with fast ships, became national heroes for their daring races across the ocean with Union warships hot on their heels. While their adventures made for good headlines, the goods they slipped through the blockade weren’t nearly enough to solve the chronic shortages. The South needed a different solution. It needed some sort of vessel that could defeat the blockading ships and yet be within the financial and technological means of the Confederate war chest. It was the proposed solution to this problem that led to one of the strangest and inspiring stories of the Civil War—that of the CSS H. L. Hunley, the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel. It is the story of its obsessive inventor, Horace Lawson Hunley, and his brave and determined crewmembers. It is also a story of technology well ahead of its time. However, as historic and groundbreak ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Kevin Kollins. Your Angels Surround You: Welcome Them into Your life... , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 101min
Angels are those magnificent beings of dazzling divine light who fill my life with indescribable joy, hope, and love. They surround me, unseen yet felt. Silent but present. They wait quietly by my side. They wait patiently for a thought, a whisper, a question, an acknowledgement of their presence, even a smile of happiness. I am so very grateful for their angelic blessings. I have been nudged by my Angel of Spiritual Wisdom to write this book. She is an Angel that is one of the ancient ones; her wisdom is the wisdom of the ages and beyond. I now realize that she has been by my side since I was born. As I reached the age of wisdom she presented herself to me. My Angel of Spiritual Wisdom is a beautiful being of light and love, and my vision of her is very clear. She is dressed in white; her white hair is long and curly. She sparkles from head to toe, and her voice is gentle. She answers my every question, and is my liaison between the heavenly realm and the earthly realm. Yes, she has encouraged me to write this book. She wants me to share my knowledge and experience of the angels that have been in my life with you. Most importantly, she wants me to show you how to contact your angels. She also wants me to encourage you to welcome and acknowledge the angels in your life. You see your angels are waiting for you to reach out to them. They want you to ask them for their help. You can ask them for help with anything, and they will be there. They will surround you with their light and love. They are waiting for you now; yes, this very moment they are waiting for your thought, your whisper, your question. Reach out to them, and your life will change forever...and you too will dance to the magical spiritual symphony of life with your angels by your side. ungekürzt. Language: English. A Likely Lad
Peter Doherty is the last of the great rock 'n' roll stories - maybe even the best ever rock 'n' roll story. Since his band The Libertines rose to international fame, he has proved endlessly fascinating, the subject of numerous books, documentaries, magazine articles, front-page newspaper headlines and TV news reports. This, for the first time, is his version of his story. As an icon Doherty is on a par with the early Rolling Stones and Sid Vicious as a bad boy and public enemy. To his hundreds of thousands of devoted fans he is a cult hero, a modern-day rebel Rimbaud. He divides critics - for every award and accolade (Greatest Hero of Rock or No 1 on the Cool List) there is a scathing review, an objection almost to his very being. Musically, there is no doubt he has defined the past twenty years of British rock 'n' roll with his sound, words, attitude, lifestyle, aesthetic and early buccaneering use of the internet to communicate with fans directly. It is also true that too often his talents as a songwriter and performer have been over-looked amid the whirlwind of controversy and scandal that has tailed him since his first spell in prison in 2003. Hard drugs, deaths, tiny gigs on the hoof, huge stadium shows, collaborations, obliterations, gangsters and groupies - Doherty has led a life of huge highs and incredible lows. It is all here: the music; the friendships; the distractions (exhibitions of blood paintings, modelling for famous fashion designers, lead roles in esoteric French films); deaths and self-destruction (he admits working as a rent boy). We are inside mansions, decadent parties, the jailhouse, the studio, in crack dens, at home (Doherty has two children) and, of course, in bed. With his trademark wit and humour, Doherty reflects on his era-defining relationship with supermodel Kate Moss and the other significant women (and men) in his life. Doherty also talks poetry, Paris (where he spends much time), philosophy, books, politics, football (QPR), cars, managers, the music business and his key influences (from Hancock to Baudelaire). There is humour, warmth, insight, baleful reflection and a defiant sense of triumph. There is harrowing detail and acknowledgement of the damage hard drugs have done - the endless litany of misdemeanours such as drink-driving, car theft, possession of heroin, crack and ketamine, robbery, hit-and-run and blackmail. Doherty's description of multiple stretches in jail, attempts at rehab, painful relapses, gruesome hospital emergencies, and estrangement from his family are eye-wateringly candid and free from self-pity. In a remarkable section, Doherty ruminates on his recent rapprochement with his father, a former Major in the British Army, after a decades-long wall of silence.- Shop: buecher
