Mit Elgar präsentiert der preisgekrönte britische Cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason ein brandneues Album mit Werken rund um Elgars Cellokonzert das wohl bekannteste im Kanon der klassischen Werke für Solocello, das in diesem Monat das 100-jährige Jubiläum seiner Uraufführung feierte. Zusammen mit dem international renommierten London Symphony Orchestra und seinem berühmten Musikdirektor, Dirigent Sir Simon Rattle, nahm Sheku das Cellokonzert in den Abbey Road Studios auf.Die Inspiration, Cello zu lernen, kam Sheku im Alter von acht oder neun Jahren, nachdem er Elgars beliebtes Konzert in der berühmten Aufnahme von Jacqueline du Pré aus dem Jahr 1965 hörte. Das Werk "appelliere unmittelbar an [seine] Emotionen", so erklärt der heute 20-Jährige, der das Stück bereits viele Male zusammen mit Orchestern auf der ganzen Welt aufgeführt hat.Für sein neustes Album verwendet Sheku Elgars berühmtes Werk als Ausgangspunkt, das ihm den Blick auf die weitere musikalische Landschaft Europas vor und nach dem Krieg erlaubt, So sind auf diesem Album Werke von Edward Elgar, Julius Klengel, Gabriel Fauré und dem in der Schweiz geborenen Ernst Bloch vereint.
