The delicious, biting wit of Saki's short stories satirizing Edwardian high society are some of the funniest and most delightful of exquisite literary miniatures. In this third volume, there are 21 glittering examples. Saki was the pen name of Hector Hugh Monro. He was born in Burma in 1870, where his father was a senior official in the Burma Police. From the age of two, he lived with two maiden aunts and his grandmother in Devon, and was educated in Exmouth and at the Bedford Grammar School. Later he travelled in Europe with his father. He joined the Burma police, but resigned after a year because of ill health and returned to England where he began his writing career as a journalist and short story writer for magazines and newspapers. Saki is regarded as a master of the short story. At the start of the First World War he refused a commission, enlisted as a private, and went to France where, in November 1916, he was killed by a shot to the head, his last words being "Put that bloody cigarette out." ungekürzt. The Chronicles of Clovis, which was published in 1911, was the third of Saki's collections of short stories. The character of Clovis Sangrail is, like Saki's earlier hero, Reginald, vain, sarcastic, and self-regarding and another vehicle for Saki's delicious, biting wit satirizing Edwardian high society in some of the funniest exquisite literary miniatures. An explosive BBC Radio 4 comedy drama about two morally-polar characters, both in love with the same woman, who has just - tragically - died. Originally broadcast as the 'Afternoon Play' on 22 March 2011. The Magnificent Andrea is the first original radio play by Nigel Planer ('The Young Ones', 'Hairspray'), in which two wonderful characters, Barry (Roger Allam) and Nigel (Nigel Planer), collide and wrestle over the memory of their shared inspirational warrior woman - and of course, her home. Andrea's former husband, boozy columnist Barry, is at the tail end of a career marked by low achievement in pugnacious, snide journalism. By contrast, Nigel - recent partner until her sudden death - is an alternative but ultra-orthodox, politically-correct naturopath. We join Barry after a typically hearty breakfast on his way from Chelsea to attend the funeral in South London, where he confronts his squeaky-clean nemesis Nigel. The lugubrious Barry is appalled at the ceremony, and it is while milling outside that the basically decent Nigel makes the mistake of inviting Barry back to the house - Barry's house - for the reception. There the fireworks really start… A dark and funny play about mourning, loss and recovery, The Magnificent Andrea also stars Sally Orrock, Brian Bowles, Jane Whittenshaw, Sam Dale, Joanna Monro and Stuart McLoughlin. Language: English. Narrator: Roger Allam, Nigel Planer, full cast. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/rt/bbcw/004944/rt_bbcw_004944_sample.mp3. Digital audiobook in aax.

The Book of Modern British Verse, edited by William Stanley Braithwaite (1878-1962). This anthology, first published in 1919, is very much a record of its time. Many of the poems deal with the cataclysmic trauma of World War One and the emergence of a new world order after the fading of the Edwardian era. Among the authors of the 151 poems can be found the names of Rupert Brooke and Ivor Gurney, best known as war poets. As well as poets like Edward Thomas, whose stars have somewhat faded, there are also contributors who are still celebrated today, but largely for literary pursuits other than poetry, ranging from James Joyce to the mystic philosopher Evelyn Underhill. In the words of the anthologist: "This little collection is intended to present to American readers the character of contemporary British verse. The period has now definitely assumed the name of 'Georgian'. It began with John Masefield and has grown into the newer blossoming of Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, and Robert Nichols." The poets whose work is represented in this anthology are, in order of appearance: Ralph Hodgson, Willoughby Weaving, John Freeman, Osbert Sitwell, Seosamh MacCathmhaoil (Joseph Campbell), John Drinkwater, TW Earp, William H. Davies, Fredegond Shove, Harold Monro, Ford Madox Hueffer, Richard Middleton, Thomas MacDonagh, William H. Davies, Lucy Lyttelton, Gordon Bottomley, Francis Ledwidge, Hester Sainsbury, Elizabeth Rendall, Gerald Gould, Hilaire Belloc, George Rostrevor, J.Turner, Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke, Aldous Huxley, James Joyce, Richard Aldington, May Doney, James C. Welsh, John Masefield, Bernard Gilbert, Padraic Colum, Iris Tree, Lascelles Abercrombie, Anna Wickham, James Elroy Flecker, Walter de la Mare, Viola Taylor, Robert Graves, Sherard Vines, Sacheverell Sitwell, James Stephens, Edith Sitwell, Cicely Fox Smith, Eva Gore-Booth, Evelyn Underhill, Winifred M. Letts, Wilfrid Wilson Gibson, Ivor Gurney, FS Flint, Herbert ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Denis Daly. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/mike/001751/bk_mike_001751_sample.mp3. Both episodes of the BBC Radio 4 two-part dramatisation of Anthony Trollope's classic 'Miss Mackenzie', a tale of a woman, past the bloom of youth, who inherits a fortune and is then beset by suitors from which to choose. Originally broadcast on 9 and 16 January 2011 in the 'Classic Serial' slot. Miss Mackenzie by Trollope was the runner-up in Radio 4's 'Neglected Classics' vote. Margaret Mackenzie is a single woman in her mid-thirties who receives a large inheritance when her brother dies. She must then deal with what comes with the fortune, including several suitors, who may, or, may not, simply be after her money. She decides to rent a small house in Littlebath and takes her surviving brother Tom's daughter with her as her ward. Tom and his wife, Sarah, are horrified that they have been left no money, especially as they find themselves in financial difficulties. Margaret's suitors include her brother's junior partner, Mr Rubb, a handsome young man but 'in trade'; and her cousin, John Ball, a widowed father of seven. John is a gentle soul who lives with his ailing father and his supercilious mother, Lady Ball, and the oleaginous Mr. Maguire, a curate in Littlebath. Unfortunately Mr. Maguire has a rather terrifying squint. Miss Mackenzie has to pick her way through this romantic minefield, not knowing who is the best suitor or whether each man wants to marry her for her fortune rather than love. Dramatised by Martyn Wade, 'Miss Mackenzie' stars David Troughton as Anthony Trollope, Hattie Morahan as Miss Mackenzie and Philip Franks as John Ball. Also featured amongst the cast are Margaret Tyzack, Stephen Critchlow, Lloyd Thomas, Sam Dale, Joanna Monro, Leah Brotherhead, Sean Baker, Claire Harry, Christine Kavanagh and Henry Devas. Directed by Tracey Neale. Language: English. Narrator: David Troughton, Hattie Morahan, Philip Franks. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/rt/bbcw/004868/rt_bbcw_004868_sample.mp3.
