The Litigators
The partners at Finley & Figg often refer to themselves as a "boutique law firm." Boutique, as in chic, selective, and prosperous. Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are none of these things. They are a two-bit operation of ambulance chasers who bicker like an old married couple. Until change comes their way-or, more accurately, stumbles in. After leaving a fast-track career and going on a serious bender, David Zinc is sober, unemployed, and desperate enough to take a job at Finley & Figg. Now the firm is ready to tackle a case that could make the partners rich-without requiring them to actually practice much law. A class action suit has been brought against Varrick Labs, a pharmaceutical giant with annual sales of $25 billion, alleging that Krayoxx, its most popular drug, causes heart attacks. Wally smells money. All Finley & Figg has to do is find a handful of Krayoxx users to join the suit. It almost seems too good to be true . . . and it is.- Shop: buecher

Killer Couple: The True Story of James Marlow & Cynthia Coffman , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 35min
James Marlow and Cynthia Coffman were a troubled couple who were convicted of murdering five people during a deadly rampage that spanned multiple states. The last two victims, 20-year old Corrina Novis and 19-year old Lynell Murray were kidnapped and found strangled and sodomized, and the murderous pair were found guilty of the crimes. Whereas both Marlow and Coffman received the death penalty for Novis' death, Marlow received a second death sentence for Murray's while Coffman was sentence to life without the possibility of parole in Murray's murder. Both defendants sought to shift the onus of blame to the other with Marlow claiming it was Coffman's idea to kill the girls while he only wanted to rob them and Coffman alleging that she was the victim of battered women's syndrome. Neither ploy was successful as the pair were convicted across the board for robbery, kidnapping, sodomy, and murder. Coffman has the distinction of being the first woman sentenced to death in California following the state's reinstatement of the death penalty in 1977. ungekürzt. Language: English. Satan having come past the Earth, with meditated guile returns as a mist by Night into Paradise, enters into the Serpent sleeping. Adam and Eve in the Morning go forth to their labours, which Eve proposes to divide in several places, each labouring apart: Adam consents not, alleging the danger, lest that Enemy, of whom they were forewarned, should attempt her found alone: Eve loath to be thought not circumspect or firm enough, urges her going apart, the rather desirous to make trial of her strength; Adam at last yields: The Serpent finds her alone; his subtle approach, first gazing, then speaking, with much flattery extolling Eve above all other Creatures. Eve wondering to hear the Serpent speak, asks how he attained to human speech and such understanding not till now; the Serpent answers, that by tasting of a certain Tree in the Garden he attained both to Speech and Reason, till then void of both: Eve requires him to bring her to that Tree, and finds it to be the Tree of Knowledge forbidden... ungekürzt. Morse v. Frederick, Hörbuch, Digital, 66min
At a school-supervised event, Joseph Frederick held up a banner with the message "Bong Hits 4 Jesus", a slang reference to marijuana smoking. Principal Deborah Morse took away the banner and suspended Frederick for 10 days. She justified her actions by citing the school's policy against the display of material that promotes the use of illegal drugs. Frederick sued under 42 U.S.C. 1983, the federal civil rights statute, alleging a violation of his First Amendment right to freedom of speech. The District Court found no constitutional violation and ruled in favor of Morse. The court held that even if there were a violation, the principal had qualified immunity from lawsuit. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed. The Ninth Circuit cited Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, which extended First Amendment protection to student speech except where the speech would cause a disturbance. Because Frederick was punished for his message rather than for any disturbance, the Circuit Court ruled, the punishment was unconstitutional. Furthermore, the principal had no qualified immunity, because any reasonable principal would have known that Morse's actions were unlawful. Language: English. Narrator: uncredited. Whatsoever Things Are True , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 93min
In August 1982, a young couple was murdered in a Chicago park. Months away from their wedding, Jerry Hillard and Marilyn Green were shot to death on the bleachers overlooking a pool on the South Side of the city. A year later, Anthony Porter, a local man with a checkered past, was found guilty of the crime and sentenced to death. Fifty hours before his execution, Porter was freed, thanks to an investigation by David Protess and his students at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism. The students found new witnesses to the crime and brought attention to Alstory Simon, an overlooked suspect, who confessed to the murders. Porter's exoneration was a watershed moment in Illinois; the case helped abolish the death penalty in the state. And then, 15 years later, Simon himself was released from prison, the charges against him vacated. Protess and his team are now the subjects of a lawsuit alleging that they conspired to imprison an innocent man - and release a killer. Whatsoever Things Are True is the result of Matthew Shaer's 10-month long investigation into the crime and its aftermath, based on thousands of pages of court documents and interviews with nearly a hundred participants, some of whom have never spoken to the press. In this extraordinary work, Shaer unravels a decades-old mystery that raises questions not only about America's criminal justice system, but about the elusive nature of justice. ungekürzt.
