Brewster’s Millions , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 342min
Would you be able to spend a million dollars in cash and leave yourself penniless if it meant you would then be given many more millions? That’s poor Monty Brewster’s dilemma in this charming tale. Just as poor Monty Brewster, twice heir to a fortune, is beginning to adjust to his cold and distant grandfather’s “paltry” million-dollar bequest, an even more mysterious benefactor emerges offering to leave him some “real” wealth. All he has to do is be penniless at nine o’clock on the morning of his 26th birthday. It seems like an easy task, but Monty discovers that it is no simple matter to divest oneself of a million dollars, especially as the bank insists on paying him $19,607.84 in interest per day. And what can you do when each ridiculous “sure-loss” suddenly skyrockets when you invest in it? Money seems to flow in faster than a person can throw it overboard. And then there are Peggy and Barbara; how are they going to react to each attempt to squander a fortune? Can Monty keep the girl while losing the money? First published in 1902 under the pseudonym Richard P. Greaves, Brewster’s Millions was one of George Barr McCutcheon’s most successful titles. The prolific author was noted for his ability to write page-turners, full of vivid characters and with an attention to detail. There have, in fact, been six movie versions of this one book, most recently starring Richard Pryor and John Candy. That is vivid testament to a great story well told. ungekürzt. Language: English. Childgrave , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 627min
When photographer Jonathan Brewster’s four-year-old daughter, Joanne, tells him about her new invisible friends, he doesn’t think too much about it. But then he sees them for himself: weird and uncanny images of the dead appearing in his photographs. The apparitions seem to have some connection to Childgrave, a remote village in upstate New York with a deadly secret dating back three centuries. Jonathan and Joanne feel themselves oddly drawn to Childgrave, but will they survive the horrors that await them there? The third novel by Ken Greenhall (1928-2014), whose works are receiving renewed attention as neglected classics of modern horror, Childgrave (1982) is a slow-burn chiller that ranks among Greenhall’s best. “Writing in Shirley Jackson’s precise, sharp, chilly prose, Greenhall delivers a slippery book that can’t be pinned down, all about spectral photography, little dead girls, snowbound small towns, and the disquieting proposition that maybe God is not civilized.” - Grady Hendrix, author of Paperbacks from Hell “A very well-orchestrated, eerie tale.” - Publishers Weekly ungekürzt. Offerings , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 488min
Kate Brewster’s quest to become the first woman to run a Wall Street institution is about to come to fruition. Wooed away from a top job at a competing firm by Ed Roth with promises of breaking the glass ceiling when she succeeds him as the head of the investment bank Drake Carlson, Kate learns that she has real potential for the top spot. First, she must prove her worth by unconventionally putting together an IPO for a small games maker whose most valuable but unknown asset may be a painting stolen from a Jewish family as they fled Austria after the Nazi invasion. Kate’s professional challenges play out amid a family crisis: Her husband’s company is imploding and he may have to relocate to a remote part of China to save even a small portion of his business. Her integrity is challenged when she’s accused of slowing down a deal to sell her husband’s company to divert the sizeable sales commission to Drake, her new company. As a result, Kate uncovers an illegal trading scheme involving her partners, and their downfall triggers another firm’s attempt at a hostile takeover of Drake. Against seemingly impossible odds, Kate is able to strike a balance between the demands of the deal she is running and the right of a patriarch’s family to seek closure for wounds that date back generations. ungekürzt.
