The Venona Secrets: Exposing Soviet Espionage and America's Traitors , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 971min
The Venona Files are several intercepted communiques between the Soviet Union and American Communists following WWII. Some historians and journalists are starting to regard the Cold-War-era American Communist Party as nothing more than a quaint club of polite if misguided ideologues. In The Venona Secrets, Herbert Romerstein and Eric Breindel intend to create a new impression of treacherous Americans "who willfully gave their primary allegiance to a foreign power, the USSR.... For Communists, true patriotism meant helping to make the world a better place by advancing the interests of the Soviet Union in any way possible." By using the now-celebrated Venona documents - top-secret Soviet cables sent between Moscow and Washington, D.C., in the 1940s - Romerstein and Breindel tell a frightening story of how deeply spies penetrated the U.S. government. ungekürzt. Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart, Hörbuch, Digital, 340min
An intimate, myth-shattering new biography of Mary Queen of Scots by a premier historian that draws on a trove of newly discovered sources. Queen of Scots, the first full-scale biography of Mary in more than 30 years, offers a singularly novel, nuanced, and dramatic portrait of one of history's greatest women. John Guy draws on sources, many previously unstudied, as varied as the secret communiques of English spies and Mary's own letters. Dispelled is the ingrained popular image of Mary as a romantic leading lady, achieving her ends through feminine wiles, driven by love to murder, undone by passion and bad judgment. We come to see her as an emotionally intricate woman and an adroit diplomat, maneuvering ingeniously among a dizzying array of factions who sought to control or dethrone her. Guy's investigation of Mary's storied downfall throws sharp new light on questions that have baffled historians for centuries, and offers convincing new evidence that she was framed for the murder for which she was beheaded. The Lion of Münster: The Bishop Who Roared Against the Nazis , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 744min
The dear God placed me in a position in which I had a duty to call black 'black' and white 'white'. These words were spoken by Cardinal Clemens August von Galen, the bishop of the diocese of Münster in Germany from 1933 to 1946. In so doing, he risked death at the hands of the Nazis, one Gestapo leader even urging that he be publicly hanged. Joseph Goebbels and others in the Nazi leadership, knowing the bishop's popularity, advised waiting, subscribing to the adage that revenge is a dish best served cold. In this, the definitive English-language biography of the great Lion of Münster, listeners will encounter the young von Galen as he learns the Catholic faith and love of the fatherland from his family, members of the German aristocracy. A nobleman, a prince of his people and of his Church, the boy grew into a man, a six-and-a-half-foot tall giant of a man, who, though he loved his homeland, loved God, his Church, and his law even more; for he knew that calling his homeland back to the ways of God is the one way in which a bishop can best demonstrate that love for the people under his spiritual care. And so, in three magnificent sermons and countless other speeches, communiques and gestures, the Lion roared. This story of his life and his stirring words provides listeners with an indispensable glimpse into the confrontation between church and state in Hitler's Germany and will serve as a reminder to all men and women of good will of the duty to call black "black" and white "white". ungekürzt. Saints of the Lost Cause Saloon
You might have already heard Katy Stephan's solo voice. She can be heard on the opening and closing credits to the Warner Bros. Film Catwoman and throughout DreamWorks' Time Machine, the Sci Fi Channel miniseries EarthSea, and many other films, television shows, and advertising. During her years with the Pacific Mozart Ensemble, Katy was a soloist on the Grammy-nominated Mass with the Deutsche Philharmonie under conductor Kent Nagano, and performed in the Meredith Monk 40th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall. Katy has also recently been a soloist with the Oakland East Bay Symphony under Michael Morgan, for Stephen Sondheim's Follies, and Bernstein's Mass. Katy has performed in Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Cyprus, the U.K. and the U.S. with various groups & projects. She has been a singing salad for Dole, a backup singer for an Elvis impersonator, and the chirpy voice of more than one children's toy. Katy has created original music for several live theatre productions in association with Upon These Boards, including Under Milk Wood (Porchlight Theatre), Word For Word's Three Blooms (Magic Theatre), Lysistrata Project (Berkeley Rep), Bury The Dead (Cooper Union, New York City) and The Inkwell Communiques. She won a Bay Area Critics Circle Award in 2005 for her role as Luisa in The Fantasticks at San Francisco Playhouse. After a decade of making music for a living, Katy crept off into a room alone with a piano to create her own songs. She then collected inspired performances from some of her favorite musicians, including Ara Anderson on trumpet and sousaphone, Alex Kelly on cello, The Blue Belles (vocalists Karina Denike & Christy Winn), Aaron Novik on clarinet, and Eric Perney on upright bass. The resulting songs are beautifully crafted sonic valentines made from scraps of Chopin nocturnes, Puccini arias, vintage glass glitter, angels prayers, musical jewelry boxes, and a bloody beating heart.
