Jumping Spider Hears Distant Sounds , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 4min
Accidental chair squeaks in a lab have tipped off researchers to a new world of eavesdroppers. Spiders don’t have eardrums, though their exquisitely sensitive leg hairs pick up vibrations humming through solids like web silk. Biologists thought airborne sounds more than a few centimeters away would be inaudible. But the first recordings of auditory nerve cells firing inside a spider brain suggest that the Phidippus audax jumping spider picks up airborne sounds from at least three meters away."Jumping Spider Hears Distant Sounds" is from the November 12, 2016 issue of Science News. ungekürzt. A Rare Recording of Navajo Code Talker Dan Akee, Hörbuch, Digital, 5min
Dan Akee was part of the Navajo code talker units of the US Marine Corps that relayed radio and phone messages in their native dialect during World War II operations. The method was fast and indecipherable to enemy eavesdroppers, as Navajo is an unwritten language of extreme complexity - with its syntax, tonal qualities, and various dialects - making it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. It has no alphabet or symbols, and is spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest. By one estimate, at the time of World War II, the Navajo language was understood by fewer than 30 non-Navajos. Approximately 400 Navajo code talkers took part in every assault the US Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions, and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language. The code was never broken by the Japanese, and its security has been credited with contributing significantly to the capture of Iwo Jima in 1945. The following are two recordings from code talker Dan Akee. Language: English. Narrator: Dan Akee. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/live/000580/bk_live_000580_sample.mp3. A Longbourn Quartet: A Pride and Prejudice Short Story Collection , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 32min
Four short stories set in the beloved world of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, which explore missing scenes and paths not taken in the original story."A Slip and a Trip"This little misstep takes place at the dance at Lucas Lodge, at which Elizabeth declines Darcy’s offer of a dance. Though in canon Jane and Bingley aren’t mentioned as even being present, they must surely have been there."The Darcy Inquisition"The scene: Darcy’s house in London, a week post-Hunsford. Darcy has lapsed into despair; Georgiana, fearing for him, has called for her cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, to help. They intend to interrogate Darcy to find out what is wrong, but somehow, things go slightly awry.Based on selected nuggets from the wonderful Monty Python sketches of The Spanish Inquisition.Incidentally, did you know that one of Jane Austen’s suggestions for Colonel Fitzwilliam’s first name was Montgomery? That discovery inspired this whole ficlet."Mr. Bennet’s Call"This is my imagining of a scene omitted from Pride and Prejudice. In the original work, we discover that Mr. Bennet paid a call upon Bingley when he teases Mrs. Bennet about not being able to escape the acquaintance. I found myself wondering, what was said in that call?"The Exception That Proves the Rule"You know the rule. Eavesdroppers rarely hear good of themselves. So, this is a what-if one-shot that is intended to be the exception to that rule. Our little tale begins at Netherfield, while Elizabeth is there nursing Jane. Elizabeth comes downstairs to dispatch the letter to her mother, requesting that the carriage be sent to collect them. Of course, she must ask Mr. Bingley for the use of a rider to convey the message to Longbourn, so she goes looking for him. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Catherine Bilson.
