A true story of growing up on a farm in Ohio in the 1930s. The author was one of 10 children in this family. Excerpt: "On Saturday night we always went to Hicksville. The streets were packed full of people who came to shop, visit friends, or go to the Huber Theater to see a movie. It was hard to get a parking place if you didn't go early. "Dad gave each kid a quarter. We got in line at the theater to see Roy Rogers or Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, in the movies. It cost a dime to get in and a nickel for a box of popcorn. "After the show was over, we would walk around the streets several times to see who was there. Then we would buy a double-dip ice cream cone and still have a nickel left to buy candy. "During the war years, when we went to Hicksville, almost all of the young men were in uniform. The streets were full of sailors, soldiers, and airmen. It was a very romantic time. "I remember hearing President Franklin Roosevelt give his famous speech when he declared war on Japan, after they bombed Pearl Harbor. I was 10 years old. We were all in the living room, listening to our radio. I can still hear his voice. "After the war started, the government rationed gas, sugar, coffee, shoes, and meat. They issued books with stamps in them for each item that was rationed. Each adult and child got a book. You had to have a stamp, or they wouldn't permit you to buy the item." The book includes many vintage photographs of the author and her family as they were growing up during the Great Depression and World War II era. ungekürzt. Language: English. When 18-year-old Maya leaves Chicago for a six-week Australian home stay, she assumes she’s heading to beautiful Barangaroo with its famous Sydney Harbour views - NOT Barangaroo Creek, a stinking hot, fly-ridden, wi-fi dead zone hours from a decent body of water. Add her host brother, Gus, who wishes she landed in someone else’s sheep paddock, and Maya is convinced she’s in for six weeks of Hicksville hell.Gus has an important trip planned this summer - a trip that does NOT include helping an animal-phobic girl from the States tick off items on her seriously clichéd Aussie must-do list. So he comes up with a list of his own - one guaranteed to send Maya back across the Pacific, leaving him free to enjoy the last of his freedom before he heads off to agricultural college like every generation of his family has.But when Maya doesn’t scare that easily, sparks begin to fly. Soon Gus and Maya discover there are hidden depths to clichéd bucket-lists and secret summer trips, and that sometimes it takes someone half a world away to remind you of all the reasons you’re here. ungekürzt. Strike one Days before the biggest game of playboy pitcher Maverick Jansen's career, his brother is killed in a horrific car accident. Determined not to let his teammates down, Mav pushes through his grief only to lose control of his signature pitch - and the series. Strike two Still dealing with the backlash of his once adoring fans, Maverick learns the team's owner plans to move the ball club to small-town America. During a night of hard drinking, Mav rails against the move to Hicksville while a fan records the entire tirade. His career takes a nosedive when the video goes viral right before spring training. Kelsey Sullivan, Media Consultant, is hired by the team's owner - her childhood friend, Thomas Scott - to help restore Maverick's image and find a way to get his mojo back. As the daughter of a former minor league ball player who walked away from her and her unstable mother, Kelsey breaks her main client rule - no male athletes - to help her friend and gain a coveted position with the ball club. Strike three or...happily ever after? When they're forced to pretend they're a couple as a last ditch effort to secure his place on the team and fix his public image, Maverick and Kelsey's romance goes from on the bench to rounding the bases in no time. Maverick knows what they have is more than just soul-shattering sex, but he'll have to overcome his fear of commitment to prove to Kelsey love can save them both. But once-burned-twice-shy Kelsey might not be able to trust again unless she can bury her long-held belief that this bad boy baseball player isn't the happily ever after type. ungekürzt.
