The Coming of the Terror: Spider #36, September 1936 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 245min
Stripped of his wealth, cut off from his faithful helpers, Richard Wentworth, known and feared throughout the Underworld as the avenging Spider, struggles with his most powerful and wily foe - the Man who came out of the East! With Wentworth's best friend, Police Commissioner Kirkpatrick framed for murder; with the entire city capitulating before that new and cruelly cunning menace from the Orient, the Spider himself seems doomed to die on the torture racks of the Far East! One man against more evil than anyone could ever imagine, enemies feared by any normal man. The Spider knew that, but it did not check the wild impulse to laughter that squeezed his lungs. It was no wonder that men call the Spider mad! Once, in a typical blood-and-screaming-bullets carnage of urban combat, Police Commissioner Kirkpatrick ticked off a long list of suspects. Wentworth blurted out this self-revealing truth. "I'm suspicious of everyone," he admitted, "even of myself sometimes." And well he should be. For Richard Wentworth was an undiagnosed manic-depressive - if not paranoid schizophrenic - subject to violent mood swings, climbing to unutterable heights of exultation in one scene, then crashing into the blackest depths of despair the next. When the Spider-madness came over him, he might pick up his treasured Stradivarius violin and launch into a night-long serenade to soul-searching. Or, he might putty up his face, don black hat and cape, go out Spidering.... Nick Santa Maria brings the action to vibrant life, narrating with a fever-pitch intensity. The Homecoming Seasons (eBook, ePUB)
The Homecoming Seasons: An Irish Catholic Returns to a Changing Long Island is a deeply moving memoir of a returning native's re-experience of his childhood community. After many years abroad as a graduate student at Cambridge, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand, and as a country program director of health care and agricultural programs in central Africa, James MacGuire returned to New York and spent most of the 1980s at Time Inc., Macmillan and the Manhattan Institute. In 1990 he married and several years later, with a second child on the way, he and his wife decamped from Manhattan for a small enclave called the Isle of Wight in the village of Lawrence on the south shore of Long Island, where MacGuire had grown up.This book tells the story of MacGuire's return to this world-how it had evolved from ancient times; been inhabited by indigenous peoples; colonized by the Dutch and English; and then grew from a sparsely populated agricultural corner of western Long Island to an early summer resort, then an outer, and, finally, an inner suburb of New York City.Jamie MacGuire skillfully weaves memories of his childhood in this almost hidden world with sketches of his family and their friends before updating his account with a lovingly detailed, diary-like depiction of returning. His parents' friends now much older, the community more diverse, as he, his wife and children make new friends as they proceed into this changed world. He captures in cinematic detail the wonder of the wetlands and surrounding natural world, the poignant life, death and rebirth of community, the joys and sorrows of marriage and parenthood, and the profound exultation of safely shepherding two beloved sons to triumphant adulthood. This is an uplifting literary memoir that will earn and deserve the widest possible audience.- Shop: buecher

The Shining Mountain , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 534min
It’s a preposterous plan. Still, if you do get up it, it’ll be the hardest thing that’s been done in the Himalayas. Thus spoke Chris Bonington when Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker presented him with their plan to tackle the unscaled West Wall of Changabang - the Shining Mountain - in 1976. Bonington’s was one of the more positive responses; most felt the climb impossibly hard, especially for a two-man, lightweight expedition. This was, after all, perhaps the most fearsome and technically challenging granite wall in the Garhwal Himalaya, and an ascent - particularly one in a lightweight style - would be more significant than anything done on the Everest at the time. The idea had been Joe Tasker’s. He had photographed the sheer, shining white granite sweep of Changabang’s west wall on a previous expedition and asked Pete to return with him the following year. Tasker contributes a second voice throughout Boardman’s story, which starts with acclimatization, sleeping in a Salford frozen food store, and progresses through three nights of hell, marooned in hammocks during a storm, to moments of exultation at the variety and intricacy of the superb, if punishingly difficult, climbing. It is a story of how climbing a mountain can become an all-consuming goal, of the tensions inevitable in 40 days of isolation on a two-man expedition, as well as a record of the moment of joy upon reaching the summit ridge against all odds.First published in 1978, The Shining Mountain is Peter Boardman’s first book. It is a very personal and honest story that is also amusing, lucidly descriptive, very exciting, and never anything but immensely listenable. It was awarded the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize for literature in 1979, winning wide acclaim. His second book Sacred Summits was published shortly after his death in 1982. ungekürzt. Language: English. Alexander Hamilton, America's Founding Father of Finance: His Original Reports on Public Credit, a National Bank, Manufactures , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 498min
Though best known for his primary authorship of the Federalist Papers, his death in a duel at the hands of Vice President Aaron Burr on the banks of the Hudson River and his star role in a 21st-century musical, it is often overlooked that Alexander Hamilton was instrumental in creating the key financial building blocks of the young United States of America. The first incumbent of the office of secretary of the Treasury on September 11, 1789 (under George Washington), Hamilton submitted a series of financial reports, meticulously researched, many of which, as Professor Mark Spencer explains in his introduction to this audiobook, became the economic foundations on which the US was built. The three reports presented here are the most important: The First Report on Public Credit (1790), Report on a National Bank (1790) and Report on the Subject of Manufactures (1791). The exultation following the victory of independence was tempered by some harsh fiscal realities - not least the question of war debt. The war was expensive: there existed $54 million of national debt and a further $21 million carried by individual states. How were both these debts to be managed? Being appointed secretary of the treasury was a tough assignment, not least because Hamilton’s strong character often brought him into conflict with other major figures, including Barr and Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton concluded that the nation should assume all the debt, aiming thereby to create a consolidated national debt. The Report on a National Bank was ‘the capstone’ of Hamilton’s transformative financial plan. Here, Hamilton called for the creation of a Bank of the United States which, among its functions, would be the supply of notes serving as the national currency. He concluded that the Bank would also provide a stable source of credit. The Report on Manufactures was, as Professor Spencer explains, ‘a program for federal stimulation o ungekürzt. Sacred Hearts: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 896min
The year is 1570, and in the convent of Santa Caterina, in the Italian city of Ferrara, noblewomen find space to pursue their lives under God's protection. But any community, however smoothly run, suffers tremors when it takes in someone by force. And the arrival of Santa Caterina's new novice sets in motion a chain of events that will shake the convent to its core. Ripped by her family from an illicit love affair, 16-year-old Serafina is willful, emotional, sharp, and defiant - young enough to have a life to look forward to and old enough to know when that life is being cut short. Her first night inside the walls is spent in an incandescent rage so violent that the dispensary mistress, Suora Zuana, is dispatched to the girl's cell to sedate her. Thus begins a complex relationship of trust and betrayal between the young rebel and the clever, scholarly nun, for whom the girl becomes the daughter she will never have. As Serafina rails against her incarceration, others are drawn into the drama: the ancient, mysterious Suora Magdalena - with her history of visions and ecstasies - locked in her cell; the ferociously devout novice mistress Suora Umiliana, who comes to see in the postulant a way to extend her influence; and, watching it all, the abbess, Madonna Chiara, a woman as fluent in politics as she is in prayer. As disorder and rebellion mount, it is the abbess's job to keep the convent stable while, outside its walls, the dictates of the Counter-Reformation begin to purge the Catholic Church and impose on the nunneries a regime of terrible oppression. Sarah Dunant, the best-selling author of The Birth of Venus and In the Company of the Courtesan, brings this intricate Renaissance world compellingly to life. Amid Sacred Hearts is a rich, engrossing, multifaceted love story, encompassing the passions of the flesh, the exultation of the spirit, and the deep, enduring power of friendship. ungekürzt. After the Flood
Conor referred to After The Flood as his opus, his life's work as a songwriter 14 great songs with voice and guitar. Often, he was working on these songs 6 hours a day learning to play slide going back to the very origins of popular music from a small flat in Cork City. He was looking around the city trying to make sense of the changes of the Ireland of the Celtic Tiger and looking back to his early years in the Czech Republic. The man himself is a quiet, shy, unassuming man, born in Dublin 1978. He first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and began writing songs at the age of 13. His first album 'Violent Dawn' was written between the ages of 16 and 21.It was recorded in 2002 in the Czech Republic and was bootlegged a good deal but never released. His songs: 'Loaded Gun' and 'Hanging Out' from Violent Dawn had a good deal of influence on contemporary music. Other songs such as: 'Travelling Blues,' 'Linda Brown,' 'Cordelia,' and 'Morning Tune' from After The Flood show a startling new maturity to Buckley's work...an authenticity...a putting away of the bluffs of the nonstop life - late nights, the mornings, the poverty, the joy, the exultation. 'After The Flood' will surprise you by it's sheer lyrical brilliance and the voice like a jet of blood on the horizon. It's sheer, determined voice calls out -I will go on, or in the words of James Joyce, 'damn the critics and detractors...' Buckley's statement that he did a little for Irish music in the Czech Republic speak of his general modest outlook but his performance on Old Town Square in 2008, literally brought Irish music to the whole city. The artwork of the album resembles a Van Gough portrait or Van Reubens and from start to finish this is a classic...by PR Simonova.- Shop: odax
