One of the most remarkably inventive voices of his generation, author Will Self delivers a new and stunning work of fiction. In Walking to Hollywood, a British writer named Will Self goes on a quest through LA freeways and eroding English cliffs, skewering celebrity as he attempts to solve a crime: who killed the movies. When Will reconnects with his childhood friend, the world suddenly seems disproportionate. Sherman Oaks, scarcely three feet tall at 45, and his ironically sized sculptures - replicas of his body varying from the gargantuan to the miniscule - spark in Will a flurry of obsessive-compulsive thoughts and a nagging desire to experience the world by foot. Ignoring his therapist and nemesis Zack Busner, Self travels to Hollywood on a mission to discover who - or what - killed the movies. Convinced that everyone from his agent to his friends and bums on the street are portrayed by famous actors, Self goes undercover into the dangerous world of celebrity culture. He circumambulates the metropolitan area in hallucinating and wild episodes, eventually arriving on the English cliffs of East Yorkshire, where he comes face to face with one of Jonathan Swift's immortal Struldbruggs. A satirical novel of otherworldly proportion and literary brilliance, Walking to Hollywood is a fantastical and unforgettable trip through the unreality of our culture. ungekürzt. Language: English. From the moment pub landlord and keen amateur entomologist, Arnold Matson, arrives in Blinkington-on-the-Treacle to take over his new hostelry, the listener is guided superbly by one of Britain’s best-loved actresses, Prunella Scales, as she introduces local characters and intimately narrates her way through a colourful collection of vignettes and poignant flashbacks that are both comically funny and disturbingly familiar. Set in an imaginary backwater village, Dandruff dips delightfully into the intricacies and miniscule absurdities of everyday life. Author John Mayfield’s world blends originality with an amalgamation of Dylan Thomas, P. G. Wodehouse, G. K. Chesterton and Alan Bennett, and can accurately be described as ‘kite flying for the imagination’. John Mayfield was born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and worked on over 2,000 audiobooks as a sound engineer and director in London for 10 years before moving to Ireland ‘to meet myself.’ He returned to the UK to form an Internet Radio Station dedicated to spoken word and, despite the fact he has written since the age of five, Dandruff on the Turtleneck is his first audio release. Prunella Scales is most warmly remembered for her role as Sybil in John Cleese’s classic Fawlty Towers, but her exceptional talent has created many other highly regarded roles in film, TV, and theatre ungekürzt. Learn how to stay optimistic during hard times, just like the Auschwitz survivors did. The horrid acts of Auschwitz concentration camp really need no introduction. It is nearly impossible to discuss this topic with someone who does not know at least a few points about it. The acts, if applied to any other context, may be restricted to the older populous, but even children grow up knowing about the genocide of World War II. Everyone knows of The Diary of Ann Frank, which portrays a girl being moved around during the Holocaust and eventually going to a concentration camp. Even Schindler's List, the timeless Hollywood classic, portrays the difficult time that the inmates had while being imprisoned at the time. The History Channel, among many other platforms of history and horrid acts of humanity or war, spares no detail regarding these atrocities. Despite all of this, it would be impolite for me to begin this audiobook without briefly outlining the facts of Auschwitz. Even if you are already aware of the particulars, at least this book will set the scene and provide you with the most miniscule perspective of the people who endured (and those who could not) this absolutely horrible point in history. Perhaps then you may realize exactly what they had to cope with to get through. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Dave Wright. At 18, after moving to London with dreams of becoming an actress, an impressionable girl who paints freckles on her face begins work experience in a West End theatre company. In between mail-outs and making cups of coffee, she meets the formidable producer Thelma Holt. Within a fortnight Thelma has stolen her, cancelled her audition for RADA, sent her to evening classes to learn to type, organised a miniscule salary and renamed her. From that moment she becomes Sweetpea. Her days are spent in an eccentric office where Alan Rickman or Vanessa Redgrave might pop in at any moment. Evenings are filled with the adrenaline of an opening-night performance or the chatter of a smart restaurant where casting for the next production is discussed. Existing somewhere between glamour and penury, Sweetpea finds herself surrounded by dynamic personalities and struggling to trust her own creative instincts. Over the years her apprenticeship takes in unusual demands, misbehaving actors, divinely inspired directors and a hot-air balloon ride with British theatre's finest. Get Me the Urgent Biscuits is a keenly observed memoir about the vanishing world of London's West End in the 1980s and 1990s, in which a young woman is swept into the orbit of a theatrical impresario. Shrewd, poignant and irresistibly funny, above all it is a coming-of-age story about the search for independence and an ode to the beguiling nature of theatre. Read by Sweetpea Slight. ungekürzt. Why are banking systems unstable in so many countries--but not in others? The United States has had twelve systemic banking crises since 1840, while Canada has had none. The banking systems of Mexico and Brazil have not only been crisis prone but have provided miniscule amounts of credit to business enterprises and households. Analyzing the political and banking history of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil through several centuries, Fragile by Design demonstrates that chronic banking crises and scarce credit are not accidents due to unforeseen circumstances. Rather, these fluctuations result from the complex bargains made between politicians, bankers, bank shareholders, depositors, debtors, and taxpayers. The well-being of banking systems depends on the abilities of political institutions to balance and limit how coalitions of these various groups influence government regulations. Fragile by Design is a revealing exploration of the ways that politics inevitably intrudes into bank regulation. Charles Calomiris and Stephen Haber combine political history and economics to examine how coalitions of politicians, bankers, and other interest groups form, why some endure while others are undermined, and how they generate policies that determine who gets to be a banker, who has access to credit, and who pays for bank bailouts and rescues. From a brilliant new literary voice comes a groundbreaking exploration of how trails help us understand the world, from tiny ant trails to hiking paths that span continents, from interstate highways to the Internet. In 2009, while hiking the Appalachian Trail, Robert Moor began to wonder about the paths that lie beneath our feet: How do they form? Why do some improve over time while others fade? What makes us follow or strike off on our own? Over the course of the next seven years, Moor traveled the globe, exploring trails of all kinds, from the miniscule to the massive. He learned the tricks of master trail-builders, hunted down long-lost Cherokee trails, and traced the origins of our road networks and the Internet. In each chapter, Moor interweaves his adventures with findings from science, history, philosophy, and nature writing-combining the nomadic joys of Peter Matthiessen with the eclectic wisdom of Lewis Hyde's The Gift. Throughout, Moor reveals how this single topic - the oft-overlooked trail - sheds new light on a wealth of age-old questions: How does order emerge out of chaos? How did animals first crawl forth from the seas and spread across continents? How has humanity's relationship with nature and technology shaped world around us? And, ultimately, how does each of us pick a path through life? Moor has the essayist's gift for making new connections, the adventurer's love for paths untaken, and the philosopher's knack for asking big questions. With a breathtaking arc that spans from the dawn of animal life to the digital era, On Trails is a book that makes us see our world, our history, our species, and our ways of life anew. ungekürzt. International Latino Award in the category "best mystery novel" and an honorable mention for "best adventure novel". Three million copies sold worldwide by the so-called "queen of the Spanish adventure fiction" and one of the top writers in the Spanish language. Holy relics are disappearing from sacred spots around the world, and the Vatican will do whatever it takes to stop enterprising thieves from stealing what is left of the scattered and miniscule splinters of the true cross the Catholic Church has in its possession. Dr. Ottavia Salina, a brilliant paleographer, toils at her classified workspace deep within Vatican City, analyzing and restoring some of the world's most valuable religious artifacts, until she is called upon by the highest levels of the Roman Catholic Church and commissioned with a mysterious new assignment: She is to decipher the strange tattoos - seven Greek letters and seven crosses - found on an Ethiopian man's corpse. Next to what was left of the body were three pieces of wood - suspected by Vatican scholars to be fragments of the Vera Cruz, actual splinters from the cross on which Christ was crucified. With the help of the captain of the Pope's infamous Swiss Guard and a renowned archaeologist from Alexandria, Dr. Salina is able to uncover a shocking truth: For hundreds of years, a secret brotherhood that refers to itself as the Staurofilakes, headed by a mysterious figure called Cato, has been hiding the true cross and means to gather all remaining fragments for themselves. The markings on the Ethiopian corpse, they soon discover, correspond with each of the seven deadly sins, and are part of the complicated, possibly deadly initiation ritual used to deem candidates worthy of membership into the brotherhood. ungekürzt. For fans of The Lost City of Z, Walking the Amazon, and Turn Right at Machu Picchu comes naturalist and explorer Paul Rosolie’s extraordinary adventure in the uncharted tributaries of the Western Amazon - a tale of discovery that vividly captures the awe, beauty, and isolation of this endangered land and presents an impassioned call to save it. In the Madre de Dios - Mother of God - region of Peru, where the Amazon River begins its massive flow, the Andean Mountain cloud forests fall into lowland Amazon Rainforest, creating the most biodiversity-rich place on the planet. In January 2006, when he was just a restless eighteen-year-old hungry for adventure, Paul Rosolie embarked on a journey to the west Amazon that would transform his life. Venturing alone into some of the most inaccessible reaches of the jungle, he encountered giant snakes, floating forests, isolated tribes untouched by outsiders, prowling jaguars, orphaned baby anteaters, poachers in the black market trade in endangered species, and much more. Yet today, the primordial forests of the Madre de Dios are in danger from developers, oil giants, and gold miners eager to exploit its natural resources. In Mother of God, this explorer and conservationist relives his amazing odyssey exploring the heart of this wildest place on earth. When he began delving deeper in his search for the secret Eden, spending extended periods in isolated solitude, he found things he never imagined could exist. “Alone and miniscule against a titanic landscape I have seen the depths of the Amazon, the guts of the jungle where no men go, Rosolie writes. “But as the legendary explorer Percy Fawcett warned, ‘the few remaining unknown places of the world exact a price for their secrets.’” PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio. ungekürzt. Nationally known pastor, Bill Winston brings this powerful message of God's provision, healing, and more that is already resident in the believer and available to those who will seek God's direction. If the Kingdom of God is in us, why aren't we living lives of greatness in our world? Bill Winston recognizes that there are two kingdoms at work in this world, and tragically, even within the church, the majority of people are still living under the destructive lies and patterns of Satan's rule. They don't have the power and provisions of God - wisdom, understanding, peace, joy, health, abundant material provision, life-changing ministry, and so much more - because they simply have not recognized the kingdom in them. The promises of God rarely come from some outside sovereign work of God, but from the kingdom already inside. The pastor of one of America's fastest growing churches, Winston helps believers to start walking their faith out in miraculous ways. Why? We have a power within us that is supernatural and flies in the face of the world's arrogant - but ultimately inadequate - self-reliance on human understanding and effort. With the faith of a child, even as small as a mustard seed, we unleash God's provision and power in our lives not by focusing on what we want, but by asking what the King of the Kingdom, God Almighty, wants us to accomplish. We quickly discover that our "grand dreams" and aspirations are miniscule in light of the greatness He has in store for us to do. This audiobook is not for Christians who are complacent and desire the status quo. This is a soul-changing book that will turn the timid into the bold, and result in miracles that will build God's Kingdom right here and right now. ungekürzt. Language: English.
