Morocco
One of the foremost American photographers of the twentieth century, Harry Callahan explored the expressive possibilities of both color and black-and-white photography from the outset of his career in 1938. Following his retirement from teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1977, however, he decided to dedicate his practice exclusively to the color medium and pursue travel to foreign locales. The twenty-three photographs in this publication, taken in Morocco in 1981, are the product of Callahan's shift to a strictly chromatic palette and demonstrate his continued interest in the visual intrigue of the everyday urban landscape and the passersby who occupy it. Depicting his familiar subjects of architectural facades, random patterns of street activity, and isolated fi gures lost in thought, the images transcend Morocco's exoticism by exploring the formal and pictorial potential of the country's environment.- Shop: buecher

Monday or Tuesday , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 129min
Monday or Tuesday is a captivating introduction to Virginia Woolf, one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. These eight tales by the author of Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse reveal her early experiments in the art of fiction. The stories convey tantalizing glimpses of uncommon yet everyday characters: a ghostly couple reliving their marriage in a haunted house, the members of a feminist society trying to figure out their purpose in life, an aspiring novelist writing the life of a stranger she meets on a train, and the various passersby in London's Kew Gardens on a July day. With wit, insight, and beautiful prose, Woolf captures the strange and wonderful movements of "an ordinary mind on an ordinary day". ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Elizabeth Klett. Antwerp , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 116min
Bolano’s radical first novel makes its audiobook debut as a New Directions Pearl.Written when he was only twenty-seven, Antwerp can be viewed as the Big Bang of Roberto Bolano’s fictional universe. This novel presents the genesis of Bolano’s enterprise in prose; all the elements are here, highly compressed, at the moment when his talent explodes. From this springboard—which Bolano chose to publish in 2002, twenty years after he’d written it (“and even that I can’t be certain of”)—as if testing out a high dive, he would plunge into the unexplored depths of the modern novel. Voices speak from a dream, from a nightmare, from passersby, from an omniscient narrator, from “Roberto Bolano.” Antwerp’s fractured narration in fifty-four sections moves in multiple directions and cuts to the bone. ungekürzt. This personal diary records the many small moments that constitute a life of harmony - with the self, the natural world, and friends, family and passersby. In these hours, we watch a wild plum blossom and the moon come up between two deodar trees; we hear a redstart whistle and the rain drum on a tin roof; we recognize the aftermath of loss and the consolation of old companions. Street Life
In 1959, at just 20 years of age, Antanas Sutkus began photographing on the streets of Vilnius, then the capital of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Lithuania. Strolling through the town, his attitude was more that of a flaneur than of a photographer, observing and absorbing the essence of daily life as it was offered to him by his fellow citizens. At the time it was difficult to find safe surroundings in such a highly controlling and controlled society as Soviet-occupied Lithuania. But the streets offered open spaces, diverse passersby, bustling traffic and multiple layers of events. It was here that people tried to carve out and preserve niches for their little moments of joy. Establishing these tiny islands of individuality within such a strict and brutal system sets the frame for Sutkus' street photography and the contrasting realities of his loving observations of everyday life.- Shop: buecher

Another London: International Photographers Capture City Life 1930-1980 - Through the Lens , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 8min
Another London reviews a survey of international photographers at Tate Britain. It is an enthralling and unexpected selection, and the anthology resonates beyond this showing. It is from the Eric and Louise Franck collection, which has been donated to the Tate, and is part of the process by which the gallery has very belatedly, but with almost overwhelming enthusiasm, entered into collecting and showing photography as a medium in in its own right, with a very active patrons group supporting acquisitions. One of the benefits of Tate joining the fray is evident in the installation of this show, roughly chronological, and rhythmically paced throughout its seven sections, with images shown in clusters, and individual photographers in depth. Vitrines show a number of books with images from settlers, by such as the American Alvin Langdon Coburn, the German EO Hoppe, and passersby, (usually on the way to America), such as the Hungarian Moholy-Nagy. ungekürzt. The Sustainable Legacy of Agnès Varda (eBook, PDF)
Drawing especially on the encounters and relationships that defined her exceptional career, The Sustainable Legacy of Agnès Varda outlines a sustainable legacy for the celebrated director and visual artist. Over nine chapters, it unpacks how creation, connection, and environment form the core of Varda's artistry, which centers foremost on relationships with her family, with other artists, even with passersby she would meet in her travels around the world. Also celebrating her feminist legacy, the chapters cover a wide range, from the classic Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) to documentaries The Beaches of Agnès (2008) and Faces Places (2017) as well as selected art installations. The book's final section is dedicated to teaching Varda's work; here, ten scholars from around the world consider how Varda's art and feminist pedagogies offer unique ways to bring crucial concepts into the classroom. By seeking a sustainable praxis to discuss and teach Varda's work, and by making pedagogical concerns an explicit part of this approach, this book argues that Varda's insights about the nature of creative work will inspire new generations of viewers and audiences.- Shop: buecher
