Cocaine + Surfing: A Sordid History of Surfing's Greatest Love Affair , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 439min
From the author of Welcome to Paradise, Now Go to Hell, a finalist for the PEN Center USA Award for Nonfiction It is likely not terribly surprising that surfers like to party. The 1960-'70s image, bolstered by Tom Wolfe and Big Wednesday, was one of mild outlaws. Tanned boys who refused to grow up, spending their days drinking beer and smoking joints on the beach in between mindless hours in the water. As the surf brands accidentally morphed into a multimillion- then multibillion-dollar industry beginning in the 1980s, however, the derelict portrait began to harm business. In order to achieve wild year-on-year growth that came to be expected, surf trunks, T-shirts and sunglasses had to be sold en masse through Midwestern mall stores. Moms in Des Moines did not want corn-fed junior to be a delinquent. And so the external surf image of the 1980s and '90s and into the present became Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton. Health, vitality, bravery, clean living, positive, and pure, with heavy doses of puritanism. Internally, though, surfing had moved on from booze and weed to its heart's true home, its soul's twin flame. Cocaine's rise in American popular culture as the choice of rich, white elites was matched, then quadrupled, within surf culture. The parties got wilder, the nights stretched longer, the stories became more ridiculously unbelievable. And there has been no stopping, no dip in passion. The surfer and his lover are entwined in gorgeously dysfunctional embrace. A forbidden love like Romeo and his Juliet, and few, if any, outside the insular surf world knew or know about this particular rhapsody. A byzantine ethic keeps interlopers far away. Bad behavior is also kept very well hidden, even from insiders, but evidence of psychosis rears its head from time to time. Overdoses, bar fights, surf contests, and murders and cover-ups. Cocaine + Surfing peels the curtains back on a hopped up, sometimes ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tom Pile. Have you ever felt a nagging sense that you’re supposed to be doing more with your life - but no idea how to figure it out, since you live in an overwhelming world? You're not alone - author Colleen Bordeaux had the same problem, and did all the wrong things to fix it - until she learned what people regret most when they die and studied what the best thinkers of humanity have said about how to not waste your brief blip on Earth.Turns out, there are only seven questions that matter in life - but most of us never ask them, and live far beneath our potential as a result. So, she answered them for herself, and found purpose, developed confidence, and quadrupled her income in the process - with no special qualifications or credentials. This audiobook is about those seven important questions, why they matter, and how to answer them for yourself to produce similar (or even better!) outcomes in your own life, highlighted with authentic, painfully honest, and often laugh-out-loud personal stories. If you listen to it, ask yourself these seven questions, and apply the answers to your own life, you’ll be the most confident person you know - clear on exactly why you’re here, what you want, where you’re going, and how to get there. This audiobook dreams of being your sidekick, a constant reminder to believe in yourself and follow your inner guide to create the most of this one life you've been given. It hopes to be a gift to your friend struggling to make a change, to your new graduate entering a world with an overwhelming number of possibilities, to your colleague unsure of their career path, to your partner, family member, student, or friend who might not see in themselves all of the gifts and potential they possess. The Newlywed Marriage: How to Put Your Marriage Back to Its Newlywed Status , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 127min
No one gets married expecting to get divorced. Why bother in the first place? We are filled with hope when we say "I do" to that other person. But the cold reality is that the divorce rate worldwide is ridiculously high and is rising every day. There was once a time when people got married and it stuck. In fact many times, these people got married after knowing each other for only a short time. They didn't live together first. They never got intimate just to "test the waters". They dove in head first and were determined to make it last. But then times changed. What brought it about? Speculation abounds when it comes to this question. Many people think it was the women's rights movement in the '70s. Others believe that it came about with the advent of more media outlets and the portrayal of sexier, promiscuous characters. Still others say it is because people just are not as committed as they once were because of the instant gratification that we expect even to this day. Whatever the reason, the divorce rate has risen alarmingly over the past few decades. Roughly half of all people who get married will get divorced within 10 years of saying their vows. From 1970 to 1996, the divorce rate quadrupled, according to the United States Census report. Many people think they have to watch out for the infamous seven-year itch that comes about after seven years of marriage. Today, couples need to watch out for the two-year itch. Dissatisfaction in marriages happens earlier and earlier as people become more disillusioned with their dreams when they do not become reality as quickly as they think they should. In the past a divorce was difficult to obtain. Only under extreme circumstances, such as abuse or adultery, were you granted a divorce. Then the courts started allowing irreconcilable differences as a reason to divorce, and then the no-fault divorce came along. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Ronald Clarkson. CBD & Hemp Oil Alchemy: Healing Through CBD Oil & Hemp Managing Severe Pain to Depression , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 135min
CBD & Hemp Oil Alchemy: Healing Through CBD Oil & Hemp Managing Severe Pain to DepressionHow to extract CBD and hemp oil, what illnesses they can actually heal, what the proper dosages are, how to use each oil, and recipes of gourmet desserts to skin care products you can make with each oil. As a patient of osteoarthritis, I have had my fair share of pain for last 11 years. Out of this 11 long years, the last two were especially bad as I could hardly get out of bed. The opioid-derived pain medicine worked for a few years, but then it felt like unless I tripled or quadrupled the dosage, they didn’t do anything for me.That’s when I started to look seriously into cannabis-derived medicine. My back was against the wall, and I was desperate to find something that would heal my pain. But the legal system in our country is not always helpful when you are trying to experiment with cannabis healing, so I moved to Golden, Colorado, where I knew I would have access to all the things I needed.I started reading everything I could find about managing pain through CBD, hemp, and THC. The more I read, the more curious I got, then I started to try them out one by one and found out not every strain of cannabis is created equal when it came to pain management.I met with a group of people who were like me and were looking for pain management through marijuana.I am happy to say that just five months after I moved to Golden, I now can function like a normal person, walk into a coffee shop, and can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee. How do you ask? Well, I won’t give the whole credit to marijuana, but a big part goes to cannabis-derived CBD and hemp, rest goes to my willingness to be pain-free without opioid-based medicines, and I did it. I am not 100 percent pain-free, but, like I said, I can finally function like a normal person. But before you buy this book, let me tell you, there is no secret that I shared here, so don’t buy ungekürzt. The Night Always Comes
?Willy Vlautin is not known for happy endings, but there's something here that defies the downward pull. In the end, Lynette is pure life force: fierce and canny and blazing through a city that no longer has space for her, and it's all Portland's loss.??Portland Monthly Magazine Award-winning author Willy Vlautin explores the impact of trickle-down greed and opportunism of gentrification on ordinary lives in this scorching novel that captures the plight of a young woman pushed to the edge as she fights to secure a stable future for herself and her family. Barely thirty, Lynette is exhausted. Saddled with bad credit and juggling multiple jobs, some illegally, she's been diligently working to buy the house she lives in with her mother and developmentally disabled brother Kenny. Portland's housing prices have nearly quadrupled in fifteen years, and the owner is giving them a good deal. Lynette knows it's their last best chance to own their own home?and obtain the security they've never had. While she has enough for the down payment, she needs her mother to cover the rest of the asking price. But a week before they're set to sign the loan papers, her mother gets cold feet and reneges on her promise, pushing Lynette to her limits to find the money they need. Set over two days and two nights, The Night Always Comes follows Lynette's frantic search?an odyssey of hope and anguish that will bring her face to face with greedy rich men and ambitious hustlers, those benefiting and those left behind by a city in the throes of a transformative boom. As her desperation builds and her pleas for help go unanswered, Lynette makes a dangerous choice that sets her on a precarious, frenzied spiral. In trying to save her family's future, she is plunged into the darkness of her past, and forced to confront the reality of her life. A heart wrenching portrait of a woman hungry for security and a home in a rapidly changing city, The Night Always Comes raises the difficult questions we are often too afraid to ask ourselves: What is the price of gentrification, and how far are we really prepared to go to achieve the American Dream? Is the American dream even attainable for those living at the edges? Or for too many of us, is it only a hollow promise?- Shop: buecher

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer AND The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Unabridged. Complete with all original illustrations)
"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn . . . It is the best book we have." -- Ernest Hemingway Complete and unabridged. Includes 335 original illustrations. Crisp text set in modern easily read font. Mark Twain's characters are surprising, unforgettable and truly human. The character Huckleberry Finn is based on one of Twain's childhood friends. Twain writes "In Huckleberry Finn I have drawn Tom Blankenship exactly as he was. He was ignorant, unwashed, insufficiently fed; but he had as good a heart as ever any boy had. His liberties were totally unrestricted. He was the only really independent person-boy or man-in the community, and by consequence he was tranquilly and continuously happy and envied by the rest of us. And as his society was forbidden us by our parents, the prohibition trebled and quadrupled its value, and therefore we sought and got more of his society than any other boy's." It is little surprise then that children are perennially drawn to Huck and his adventures. The dialogue faithfully reproduces the common speech of his day. Twain explains, "In this book a number of dialects are used, to wit: the Missouri negro dialect; the extremest form of the backwoods Southwestern dialect; the ordinary 'Pike County' dialect; and four modified varieties of this last. The shadings have not been done in a haphazard fashion, or by guesswork; but painstakingly, and with the trustworthy guidance and support of personal familiarity with these several forms of speech." The plot combines adventure, suspense and mischief with the darker side of humanity: murder, deceit, brutality and racial prejudice. It is a great adventure story and much more, enlivened by Twain's trademark humor and observations of human nature. Mark Twain's record of reported speech precisely captures the language of the Antebellum South, and so, as one might expect, there are words that are unacceptable today. Since times have changed, these have also been changed, but otherwise the text is original. Essential reading for any English speaker. Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 - April 21, 1910) was an American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. He was lauded as the "greatest humorist the United States has produced," and William Faulkner called him "the father of American literature". Features of this edition:Complete and unabridged Includes 335 original illustrations. Crisp text set in modern easily-read font. Unlike cheaper editions, this book is a standard convenient size, not A4/8.5x11.- Shop: buecher
