King George VI In Britain The phrase "an heir and a spare" refers to the imperative for members of the royal family to provide both an heir to take on their title and a spare. King George VI, or Albert as he was known prior to his kingship, had a career in the Royal Navy and served during the First World War before King Edward VIII’s decision to abdicate his throne.  Determined to restore the British royal family in the eyes of the people, King George VI played a pivotal role in the victory of the allied nations in the Second World War.  In this audiobook you will hear about... The way of family has all but been lost to this generation, and there are several contributing factors that need to be carefully considered. The primary reason for the decline of family in this country is the absence of both fathers and mothers and any real sense of cohesion or continuity with one another. I believe that it would be safe to conclude that a large percentage of young married couples are working two or more jobs in order to make ends meet and provide the life they want for their families. Unfortunately, the pursuit of a career path has forced them to abdicate the responsibility of rearing their children to babysitters, day-care workers, teachers, and other mentors, most of whom are strangers who may or may not share the same core values. They may be decent, moral people who truly care for children in general, but they are far from friends and family who have our back and fully understand what our children need the most. There are a lot of contributing factors to the divorce rate in this country, but it may surprise us to discover that infidelity is not on top of the list. "Incompatibility" is the basic reason that couples are divorcing in North America, and that translates into a growing percentage of families being torn apart and struggling to find their way in life. ungekürzt. Personal trainer Rebecca McCall is furious when her coworker is sidelined and she's forced to teach the “Be Your Best Bride” class. As if being a size two for your wedding photos is all for which exercise is good. Could the whole thing get more vain and sexist? The class is full of preening, giggling bridezillas, but one woman stands out: the one who confesses she's only there because her fiancée signed her up. Who does that to someone about whom they care? And why can't Rebecca take her eyes off her?  Spencer Thompson is a second-guesser. After making the worst mistake of her life, she's happy to abdicate responsibility and let other people make her decisions for her. She's always felt a little bit too soft, a little bit too curvy in all the wrong places. Her fiancée apparently agrees because she signed Spencer up for a class at the gym. Terrified by the online profile of the instructor, the epitome of zero body fat, Spencer is relieved to find someone new, and realistic-looking, leading the class. Except the instructor seems to hate her, and Spencer has no idea why.    When a perfectly innocent post-workout smoothie leads to an earth-shattering kiss, Rebecca wonders if she's been wrong all along, and Spencer is challenged to make another decision that could change her life forever. ungekürzt. From Kathryn Harrison, one of America’s most admired literary voices, comes a gorgeously written, enthralling novel set in the final days of Russia’s Romanov Empire. St. Petersburg, 1917. After Rasputin’s body is pulled from the icy waters of the Neva River, his eighteen-year-old daughter, Masha, is sent to live at the imperial palace with Tsar Nikolay and his family - including the headstrong Prince Alyosha. Desperately hoping that Masha has inherited Rasputin’s miraculous healing powers, Tsarina Alexandra asks her to tend to Aloysha, who suffers from hemophilia, a blood disease that keeps the boy confined to his sickbed, lest a simple scrape or bump prove fatal. Two months after Masha arrives at the palace, the tsar is forced to abdicate, and Bolsheviks place the royal family under house arrest. As Russia descends into civil war, Masha and Alyosha grieve the loss of their former lives, finding solace in each other’s company. To escape the confinement of the palace, they tell stories - some embellished and some entirely imagined - about Nikolay and Alexandra’s courtship, Rasputin’s many exploits, and the wild and wonderful country on the brink of an irrevocable transformation. In the worlds of their imagination, the weak become strong, legend becomes fact, and a future that will never come to pass feels close at hand. Mesmerizing, haunting, and told in Kathryn Harrison’s signature crystalline prose, Enchantments is a love story about two people who come together as everything around them is falling apart. The Life and Death of King John was probably written in the 1590s but not published until the First Folio in 1623. Of Shakespeare's 11 history plays, King John is the one which deals with the story of a monarch most removed from Shakespeare's time. The historical remoteness of this ruler, and also the fact that he had no genealogical links with the Tudor dynasty, enabled Shakespeare to present him in a warts and allà fashion. The narrative of the play mirrors accords closely with the traditional portrait of a cunning, unscrupulous, vacillating, cruel and irascible sovereign, who managed to alienate his own nobles, France and the Roman Church. Philip, king of France, claims that Arthur, John's nephew, is the rightful king of England, and threatens war if John will not abdicate. The hot-tempered John contemptuously dismisses this claim and invades France. Full-scale war is about to break out when Hubert, a leading citizen of Angiers, before which both armies are encamped, suggests an ingenious diplomatic solution to the conflict: Philip's son, Lewis, is to marry Blanch, John's niece. By this arrangement, Philip gains territory and John's hold on the English throne will become more secure. All parties accede to this suggestion, except Blanch's mother Constance, and the wedding goes ahead. However, this happy resolution is destroyed by the arrival of Cardinal Pandulph, the legate of the imperialistic Pope Innocent III, who excommunicates John for appointing a bishop of whom the Pope does not approve. Philip decides that his allegiance to Rome is more important than his pact with John, and war breaks out. Later, Lewis invades England at the instigation of Pandulph, who suggests that Lewis' claim to the English throne is as strong as those of John and Arthur. John eventually reconciles with the church, and while a peace agreement between England and France is being arranged by Pandulph, dies, after being poisoned by a rebellious monk. p ungekürzt.
