Handel, the celebrated opera composer, was commissioned by the new king to compose the music for this grand ceremony which was due to be held at Westminster Abbey. His antiphons stood by ceremonial works by other composers such as Purcell, Blow, Tallis, Farmer, Gibbons and Child, intermingled with superb fanfares and processions of drums. The result is one of the most beautiful ceremonial works ever written for a coronation in England.

William Cornysh and Benjamin Britten were prolific writers of both sacred and secular music. Cornysh is actually two people, quite possibly father and son. Both were court musicians who excelled at writing complex and adventurous antiphons for the church, as well as beautiful secular songs for the courts of Henry VII and Henry VIII.

Volume one in the series of nine contains much of the music that Tallis wrote during the reign of Henry VIII. The two early votive antiphons Ave Dei and Ave Rosa open the album and it concludes with one of Tallis's masterpieces Salve Intemerata.

Much of the music on this recording centres around Taverner's earlier career, including the three surviving large-scale Votive Antiphons. Included, too, is his sumptuous six-part Quemadmodum, which stylistically foreshadows true "Renaissance" composition in England.

Les Pages & les Chantres du Centre de Musique de Versailles - Olivier Schneebeli (Dir) -- Marc Antoine Charpentier was one of the most prolific composers of sacred music during the "Ancien Régime". Vespers were an important service in religious worship at that time, as witnessed by the considerable number of psalm settings, antiphons, hymns and canticles.

This is one of the more unusual volumes in Leslie Howard's survey of Liszt's solo piano music. The Responsories and Antiphons, S30, are settings of plainchant from the Liber Usualis to which Liszt has added simple harmonies. The works are listed in Grove as being choral, but they are hardly suitable for performance as such and Leslie Howard is of the view that various indications in the manuscript indicate that Liszt envisaged keyboard performance.

In the Gospel of Matthew Jesus praises the head of a household who brings from his storeroom both the new and the old - nova et vetera. Having published our first CD "Tempus Adventus", as a part of a project called "In illo Tempore - the music in Slovak churches before 1600" this time we decided to showcase the New that we have in our "storeroom". This CD is based on the repertoire, prepared for our concert in the program of the "Ars Nova Cassoviae" Festival in 2008. With the preparation of this concert we have also started cooperating with the conductor Jan Mikušek. This recording interweaves the thread of "old Gregorian chant" into the sacred music production of the contemporary authors. This thread is present in different forms. Apart from three original antiphons, it appears in some pieces in the form of inspiration and, in others, in actual citation. In yet others it appears in some combination of the ancient plain chant with the modern vocal polyphony. The three falsobordones of this album (4, 7, 18) were composed at our impetus. The oldest one was composed by Renate Stivrina on the occasion of the aforementioned 2008 concert. The next two were produced especially for this CD. Falsobordone is one of the techniques which is used to present psalms during the Liturgy of the Hours, usually by alternating the plain chant and the vocal polyphony verses. This style started to be used in the 15th century (along with other forms) and was still in use in the 18th century. This style of music is widely used by our choir in the Košice Cathedral apart from other also for practical reasons and inspired our composers to arrange contemporary falsobordones. In all three cases the authors created several "musical patterns" which can be applied in the individual psalm verses. The anticipated scheme in each piece is based on the choice of two alternating models. The birth of Psalmus 85 by Mirko Krajci was also at our impetus. Although he did not create falsobordone, he was inspired by it in creating the piece. In view of the short amount of time that we had for recording it, it's inclusion on the CD was seriously threatened. However, we are extremely glad that the threat was overcome and has been included. The unison parts of the antiphons and psalms used come from the Gregorian repertoire (8th-10th century). This choice was made in order to correspond in text with other compositions in this album. Our source was Graduale Simplex. The album received a great review on the Czech radio station Vltava and we have received a lot of good feedback from the composers themselves.
