Ranger Cade Rigens is working to establish the nation's newest national park in one of the most rugged and remote parts of the American West. On the cusp of a history-making public hearing, the park's most vocal opponent comes to Cade with news about a young man who went missing doing research in the mountains. Venturing into the wilderness with a political adversary as his guide is the least of Cade's problems. As he struggles to uncover what happened, he gets the attention of militant activists who stymie his progress and threaten his safety. As he gets close to unraveling it all, he discovers at the center a mystery as old as the region's settlement. Deception at the Diamond D Ranch is grounded in present-day political tensions about federal land in the West. It also draws on the story and heritage of Basques who moved to the West at the turn of the twentieth century to work as miners and sheep herders. Basque language, dance, traditions and stories dating to 6000 BC are thriving in the Intermountain West, and the central riddle in Deception at the Diamond D Ranch hinges on the lore and legends of this vibrant and influential heritage.

Over the last several centuries, Spanish has been across multiple continents and forged connections between all of them.Spanish has persisted as a linguistic force since the Spanish empire began to cover the world over. The language spoken now isn’t quite the same as the language spoken in the 15th century on the first voyage to the new world, but the similarities between that variety of Spanish and the modern-day variety of Spanish sets you up for libraries worth of literature from all over the world in the Spanish language. What’s more is the sheer beauty of the fact that Spanish, since it’s covered the world over, has taken in a number of influences from other languages. Through its journey starting as a mere dialectical splinter of vulgar Latin (the version of Latin spoken by the general populace of the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire), Spanish has picked up plenty of influences from all kinds of different languages and cultures, most notably from Arabic during the Arab occupation of Spain from the 700s to around the 13th century, but also from the Goths, the Basques, the Native Americans, and the Celts. So, in other words, when you learn Spanish, you’re setting yourself up to be involved in learning a whole wealth of cultural and historical information in what is a relatively passive manner. That sheer attachment to history is one of the most beautiful things about learning language, in general. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: John E. Martinez. Learn about the history of whaling with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The history of whaling is a fascinating look at international efforts to protect finite resources in international waters, otherwise known as common territory or commons. While whaling can date back to 6000BC, large-scale whaling is thought to have commenced around the twelfth century with the Basques who killed a large number of right whales in the Bay of Biscay. Despite very primitive modes of slaughter, using hand-held harpoons and man-powered boats, they were believed to have depleted the local whale stocks within a century. In the following centuries, even without significant technological improvements, whaling continued unchecked in the North Atlantic and resulted in the extinction of the gray whale and a significant reduction in the numbers of other species.
