  Bloch's single-span second sonata, subtitled Poème mystique (1924), is mainly on the striving side - a beautiful, rhapsodic unfolding - while brutalism is obtruded by the middle movement of Shostakovich's 1968 sonata. Duration: 70'18 One of the aims of the Jade label is to preserve Australian musical history by re-mastering and releasing significant recordings. The centrepiece of this release is a live recording made in Christ Church St. Lawrence, Sydney, at the Liturgy on Good Friday in 1979, sung to traditional plainchant with choruses by Tomas Luis de Victoria (1549-1611) by Charles Dale, Donald Haws and Brian Copeland with the Church choir conducted by Colin Sapsford. This is preceded by Allworth's Times Remembered for 3 oboes and two organ works by Eric Gross. The religious theme is also present in solo piano and organ works by Allworth, and No. 4 of Austin's Meditations (for piano) on the Ten Commandments. Secular music is represented by Allworth's 3 piano solos titled after well-known TV soap operas, Carr-Boyd's jazzy piano piece Carl's Motel Music, and 3 of Strahan's satirical songs for voice and guitar written for a Breakfast Show TV spot, and performed by the composer.   Watching the Parade

  WATCHING THE PARADE contains 14 original songs. The material springs from blues and there are elements of folk and other roots music in it. It's got a foot in the past, but it's all brand new. The tracks cover a variety of styles and sounds. The centrepiece is Mark's 1934 National Trojan resonator guitar, and he also plays acoustic 12-string and 6-string and electric guitars. The tracks feature a wide variety of instrumental combinations, including double bass, mandolin, harmonica, organ, piano, drums and percussion - which are played by some of London's top roots musicians. The songs cover a variety of themes. Some are rooted firmly in the present day, some imagine the past world of the early blues greats, some use imagery of the past to talk about the present. They all have something to say. The aim is to tap into the timeless quality of the early blues to produce music totally relevant to the present day.
