Fire & Ice
Pianist, Rebecca-Sen Chan was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She played her first public recital at the age of six when her remarkable talent was already in evidence. Wrote the Daily Times (British Columbia) "Piano competition sensation...many pianists would envy her tone control. Bravo!.....fingers of steel!'' Before taking residency in the United States Rebecca-Sen Chan attained top prizes in competitions attracting the interest of artists worldwide. She was sponsored by the Nickel Foundation of Canada to further her career to study with Soulimna Stravinsky. At the Interlochen Centre for the Arts, she was the recipient of the Van Cliburn Award. Ms. Chan's performances at the Banff Centre and the Aspen Music Festival were well received with invitations to return in subsequent years. As a master student of the famed British pianist, Clive Lythgoe, she was promptly engaged in a series of solo recitals and concerto appearances. Her orchestral debut with the members of the Cleveland Orchestra playing the Liszt E Flat Major concerto was a huge success which led to specially featured performances on WCLV-FM, Cleveland's fine arts station as well as other stations on the east coast and CBC of Canada. Interlochen's classical music station IPR played her new album " Fire and Ice" during the 2008 summer festival. As a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, Rebecca-Sen Chan has continued to distinguish herself in recitals and concerto appearances. She had the deep honour of working with American concert pianist, Elena Guirola Hitchcock, who passed on the legacy of her teacher, Egon Petri. Her West Coast recital debut at Stanford University was generously promoted by Adolph Baller of the Alma Trio. She was then immediately engaged to perform the Mozart K453 concerto in San Francisco marking her West Coast concerto debut. Teaching the art of practice, discipline, love of music and mentoring young talent has been an important part of being a performing artist. She continues to work with students in master classes and as a guest lecturer. ''Fire and Ice'' marks her first of a series of albums.- Shop: odax

Roger Wright, a young, dashing, phenomenal pianist is described as "elegant and charismatic" by the American Record Guide, and praised for his astute musical intelligence by any who have heard him in concert. While these well deserved accolades are justified and even somewhat understated, what really sets this marvelous musical talent apart is his extraordinary ability to communicate with audiences in a manner that is exciting as it is fresh. A native Texan, Roger has played to critical and audience acclaim throughout the United States and abroad including New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Houston, San Diego, Calgary, Sydney, Munich, Pretoria and Dublin. He has performed onstage and in both radio and TV broadcasts in these and many other settings. Wright burst onto the national spotlight by winning the 24th Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall in New York City. His international reputation was further enhanced when he was eliminated from the 2000 Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia. The decision of the jury precipitated mass protests from listeners who followed the competition via national radio broadcast and worldwide web cast. In response to this unprecedented outpouring of support, the ABC, principal sponsor of the competition, marketed a debut recording of Wright's performances at the competition. This CD, "Piano Masterpieces" was later named "CD of the Year" by renowned Australian music critic Neville Cohn. His recording of Between Five Bells from this CD earned composer Peter Sculthorpe the Australian Performing Rights Association's (APRA) Award for the Most Performed Contemporary Classical Composition of 2001. Wright was one of 30 competitors selected for the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, where he was an audience favorite. He was a finalist at the 3rd Esther Honens International Piano Competition in Canada and Gold Medal winner of the 2003 San Antonio International Piano Competition where he also won awards for Best Performance of the Commissioned Piece and Best Performance of a Romantic Work. Roger distinguishes himself not only by his demeanor and great talent, but he also thrives on meeting and interacting with the orchestra members, youth performers and fans. Unlike many concert performers, Roger also seeks out opportunities to play before young musicians and children to share his passion for music. His genuinely charming and affable personality make him both a critical and popular guest artist in any setting and worthy of the appellation, "a phenomenal pianist", offered by the St. Petersburg Times. Interestingly, Roger (sometimes known as "Trey") was the winner of the 2004 National Scrabble Championship in New Orleans. He has appeared on ABC's The Jimmy Kimmel Show, NBC's Identity and The Today Show, CBS Good Morning America as well as ESPN, CNN, and GSN's Lingo. Roger currently resides in Los Angeles where he enjoys performing, teaching, collaborating, and writing his own compositions.- Shop: odax

Chopin Piano Music
Frederic Chopin was born near Warsaw in 1810. He was a child prodigy who published his first piece a Polonaise at seven. He received an excellent general education in Poland but left at twenty to further his career and never returned. He spent almost all his adult life in Paris where he died of TB in 1849, but his love for Poland stayed with him, as his many Polish dances - Mazurkas and Polonaises - so clearly demonstrate. Chopin has been called the 'Poet of the Piano', having never written anything which did not involve this instrument. Mazurkas Chopin wrote more than 55 Mazurkas, his final compositions were two Mazurkas. The Mazurka is a dance in 3/4 time similar to a waltz, but characterized by a strong accent on either the second or third beat or a dotted first beat. Chopin's Mazurkas evoke the Polish spirit without using actual folk melodies. The Mazurka in B-flat, Opus 7, no. 1, is one of the most popular with it's scherzando theme. Opus 63, no. 2 in F minor, published in 1847, has a lingering sadness and elegiac sound caused by sharp dissonances, chromatic passing tones, and suspensions. Opus 63, no. 3 in C-sharp minor, is eloquently lyrical and concludes with a display of Chopin's contrapuntal skill: a perfect canon at the octave. Opus 67, no. 3 in C major of 1835 is a dancing tune, although Chopin stated that the Mazurkas, like the Waltzes, were not intended for dancing. Opus 68, no. 2 in A minor, written in 1827, is the earliest of the group despite it's highest opus number. Scherzo in E Major, Opus 54 This Scherzo, the last of the four Chopin wrote, was published in 1843. It is more truly a Scherzo (literally, a joke) than the others, which are stormy and in minor key. It is playful, with a lightness rare in Chopin's larger works. The middle section has a poignant melody, and the Coda with scales running the length of the keyboard, brings the work to a brilliant conclusion. Nocturnes Nocturne is a French word indicating 'night piece'. Chopin did not invent the Nocturne, though his are best known. They range from the delicate to dramatic, and are generally in three - part form: ABA. Opus 15, No. 2 in F-sharp major. 1830-31, is among the most popular. The opening section contains one of Chopin's loveliest melodies, while the middle section, 'Doppio Movimento', is turbulent and passionate. Opus 27, no. 1 in C-sharp minor of 1840, is one of Chopin's greatest works in this form. This opus is tragic and menacing, opening with a chromatic melody. The middle section, marked 'Piu mosso', is restless and agitated. Ballade in F minor, Opus 52 Like the Scherzos, there are four Ballades. The F minor is the last. The Ballades were published between 1836 and 1843. Opus 52 is a narrative on a heroic scale. Chopin is at his most intimate and also most tragic. The opening melody has the charm of a slow, mournful waltz, but the piece is also exalted, intense and sublimely powerful, ending with a stormy, bravura coda. Lorraine Falberg Fuchs, a native New Yorker, appears regularly with chamber music groups and in solo performances. She started piano studies at the age of three, giving her first solo recital in Steinway Hall at age six. Ms. Fuchs was a semi-finalist in the first Van Cliburn Amateur Competition and was a finalist in competitions in Paris, New York and New Jersey. She has been an active participant in the Marlboro Vermont Music Festival. Ms. Fuchs is an alumna of the University of Michigan. Her studies in New York were with Willard McGregor, Leonard Shure, Claude Frank and Richard Goode.- Shop: odax
