The Memory of All That , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 884min
The price of a soul, or cost of success, for a hero in Hollywood. Robert Peterson, encouraged by easy words and the success of one novel, is a Hollywood innocent. His first lessons are harsh; pornographic films with a waiter's job to pay the rent seem the only option. Then he meets a powerful, eccentric British producer who, liking a Svengali role, adds Robert to his stable of wannabes. But there is a price.... Bryan Forbes' powerful novel is filled with great characters. The women in Robert's life include the wholly ambitious, sexy Amanda; the domesticated Tracey, with the morals of an alley cat; and the beautiful, empty Lauren, whom only the camera defines. And the men who teach him the lessons of life include a knife-throwing English director more histrionic than his stars; the agents, double-dealing in wives and clients; and the fellow scriptwriters with strange secrets. Who could live in the middle of all this scheming ambition and survive? ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: William Hope. The Old Curiosity Shop, Hörbuch, Digital, 351min
We defer to AudioFile for a spot-on description of this award-winning audio edition of The Old Curiosity Shop. "This 1841 exercise in pathos and villainy defines 'Dickensian' in all its fascinatingly repulsive excess, containing as it does one of the most celebrated scenes in all Victorian fiction - the death of Little Nell. The abridgment heard here excises many of the author's tedious redundancies (he was paid by the word) while retaining most of what makes Dickens Dickens. Scofield, one of the giants of the British stage, turns the redaction into a lesson in actor's tact. He has decided to meet the melodrama head on but with the utmost control. He gives us the lush narrative intimately, as if reading to us at our elbow, and engraves the characters with all the vividness of an aural Daumier or Hogarth. He pulls out the stops on heaviness and gloom without actually becoming bogged down by them, his warmth and love of the material keeping him buoyant. In addition to his histrionic acumen and artistry, he possesses one of the most distinctive and exciting voices of the English-speaking world. It would be a pleasure to hear him read the London phone book. Warning: Sensitive listeners should purchase a box of Kleenex to keep handy before playing this recording." Y. R. I Want to Live: The Story of Madhubala , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 410min
Madhubala - the very name conjures up vivid images of a love goddess possessing bewitching beauty, dazzling radiance, subtle sensuality and, above all, a tantalizing screen presence. Her ‘reel life’ histrionic performances held (and continue to hold) audiences/viewers entranced. Her talent was phenomenal, and she could literally glide through a movie, whatever be the role. She could convey an impressive array of emotions with her eloquent eyes and facial expressions without resorting to melodramatic contortions. Tragedy, romance, comedy, drama, and what have you - she could take everything in her stride, exquisitely and flawlessly, as convincingly proved by superhits such as Mahal, Tarana, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and the magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam. All this she achieved despite a major heart disease, which assumed serious proportions as her career soared. This volume presents a fascinating panorama not only of the ‘reel life’ Madhubala but also of the ‘real life’ Madhubala, who was an extremely compassionate and caring human being, but lived in the shadow of her dominant father. The author recounts her captivating saga, right from her first film - Basant (1942), as a child star, up to the magnificent Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and beyond. Enthralling cameos from her masterpieces such as Mahal, Mr & Mrs 55 and Amar are depicted in graphic detail. Also, all the drama involved in her love affair with Dilip Kumar, which culminated in intense acrimony, has been poignantly portrayed. The last few years of her life were spent in virtual solitude in spite of her being married to Kishore Kumar, and death, in a way, came as a release for her. ungekürzt. Language: English. Crush OCPD: Help for Couples Hindered by Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder: Transcend Mediocrity, Book 92 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 25min
Many of my readers and listeners write to me asking how to better help their spouse or partner who has OCPD. After writing my book on OCPD - 35 Underlying Causes of OCPD, I jumped directly into researching everything that I could in order to help these couples to find a way to grow together. I knew some of the steps that helped OCPD couples because of my own experiences in growing and learning with my OCPD/Aspie spouse, but I wanted to find a much more "big picture" way to approach and "cure" or lessen OCPD tendencies. While doing my research, I stumbled across information on different types of monkeys and apes which explained the various types of brains and levels of empathy, emotional maturity, and social skills that are evident in society today. There are three types of great apes that are said to relate to the different types of personality disorders that are evident if you look at the human race and normal human behaviors. The concept is that the Bonobo apes represent the humans who have traits and tendencies typical of avoidant personality disorder and dependent personality disorder. The chimpanzees represent antisocial personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and histrionic personality disorders. The last subset of apes that fell on the chart are the orangutans, which are largely representative of paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders. The purpose of looking at this link between human and apes is that it is possible that the differences in human empathy, social skills, and personality are not so much "abnormal" as they are simply slightly more primitive and animalistic in nature.... Essentially, these personality traits that we are classifying as "abnormal" are actually somewhat normal range. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: D Gaunt. Narcissistic Personality Disorder: How to Combact the Abuse of Narcissism , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 281min
Persons with narcissistic personality disorders are self-centered and arrogant people with appropriate behavioral patterns, do not need to think and empathize with other people, and have a feeling of extreme admiration. How does narcissistic personality disorder occur? Is there any treatment?Persons with narcissistic personality disorder are those who are indifferent to someone else's thoughts and wishes. Narcissistic people who are arrogant, who are insensitive to the experiences and experiences of others and who constantly want to bring themselves to the forefront are called narcissistic. These people do not put themselves in the place of others, they do not understand others.Narcissist people tend to feel worthless, even though they seem to engage with them. They cannot come to criticism of others. They like to use them for their own purposes. They are insatiable in power and love and have the characteristics of seeing themselves as one of a kind. They can't empathize with anyone. They expect approval and attention from others. When their expectations are not met, their self-esteem is shaken, and they feel resentment and depression. They despise anyone who doesn't show interest or respect.Since this personality disorder is associated with antisocial, borderline, and histrionic personality disorders, it is very difficult to diagnose. As they age, their beauty and strength disappear. They become angry in the face of negativity, and have a sense of revenge. They become unconcerned in the criticism of their lives. They see the criticism as worthless. The following criteria are combined; the person may be diagnosed with narcissistic disorder.People who use others for their own interestsPeople who are reluctant to understand the feelings of other people, who cannot empathize, who envy others, or think that others are jealous of themPeople who think that they are very importantPeople who constan ungekürzt. Sinfonie 10
"Maxim Shostakovich eschews histrionic gesture, there is much quiet eloquence, grandeur of outline and an impressive gravity to his soberly measured account of the first movement. ... The scherzo is massively weighty, brutal but less pointedly vicious than usual." - Gramophone- Shop: odax
