Fifty years ago, neuroscientists thought that a mature brain was fixed like a fly in amber, unable to change. Today, we know that our brains and nervous systems change throughout our lifetimes. This concept of neuroplasticity has captured the imagination of a public eager for self-improvement - and has inspired countless Internet entrepreneurs who peddle dubious "brain training" games and apps. In this book, Moheb Costandi offers a concise and engaging overview of neuroplasticity for the general listener, describing how our brains change continuously in response to our actions and experiences. Costandi discusses key experimental findings, and describes how our thinking about the brain has evolved over time. He explains how the brain changes during development, and the "synaptic pruning" that takes place before brain maturity. He shows that adult brains can grow new cells (citing, among many other studies, research showing that sexually mature male canaries learn a new song every year). He describes the kind of brain training that can bring about improvement in brain function. It's not gadgets and games that promise to "rewire your brain" but such sustained cognitive tasks as learning a musical instrument or a new language. (Costandi also notes that London cabbies increase their gray matter after rigorous training in their city's complicated streets.) He tells how brains compensate after stroke or injury; describes addiction and pain as maladaptive forms of neuroplasticity; and considers brain changes that accompany childhood, adolescence, parenthood, and aging. Each of our brains is custom-built. Neuroplasticity is at the heart of what makes us human. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Tim Andres Pabon.

Jim Vilatzer was going nowhere - working in his parents' restaurant, sleeping in his childhood bedroom - until he ran up gambling debts that forced him to go somewhere far away...fast. He uses his Russian-language skills (learned from his emigre grandparents) to cadge a job in Moscow finding and interviewing survivors of the Gulag. At first, he only finds that they are well hidden and leery of sharing their horrific stories, but he also discovers that he's falling in love with their homeland. He is intoxicated by Moscow's brooding, ironic atmosphere, its vast reservoir of entrepreneurial energy, its otherworldly churches and majestic subways. On any given day, petty indignities are more than offset by random acts of kindness.Jim's taste for gambling is satisfied merely by living in a city that teems with risk and promise. So he blithely accepts a big win when a chance meeting with a lovely aspiring actress leads not only to romance but also to her grandfather, a concentration camp survivor who does actually want to share his story. Soon Jim is on a roll, scoring interviews with other survivors, learning harrowing and fascinating things about bygone atrocities and feeling like he has finally found where he belongs. But his apparent success has earned him the attention of Russia's Interior Ministry and CIA. Jim has become an unwitting cog in a scheme to spirit Soviet scientists and their deadly secrets out of Russia and into the hands of the highest bidder. Pursued ruthlessly by both sides, he must flee again, this time to the lawless border country, where an economist-cum-mobster is preparing to peddle the world's most dangerous technologies to whichever terrorists can muster the cash first. ungekürzt. It takes a monster to catch one. Zane Walker - FBI, Magickal Crimes Division There's a reason the bureau sends me undercover with the worst drug cartels in the world - my magick is as illegal and dirty as the enhancers they peddle. Just the kind that "Pennies" Machnik - Dziki crime lord - likes to use on his enemies. Being his enforcer lets me keep my own monster locked up while I build a case against him. If I can bring Pennies in, maybe I can finally put the stigma of what I am behind me. But when people start overdosing on his street drugs, a beautiful witch storms in, making demands she thinks she can back up with magick. I have to make a split second choice...and the monster comes raging out. Ever Strange - CEO, Strange Medical Technologies Someone has killed my father. They made it look like an overdose, but Asher Strange, the world-renown researcher of medical magick, never took an illegal drug in his life...much less tawdry magick enhancers. A long line of us stretches back to the first days of High Magick - no way he would throw that away chasing a quick high. "This book is very timely: the instrumentalization of history for political goals has become a pressing issue and worrisome feature of many polities, to the point of challenging even the most consolidated democracies. Focusing on Yugoslavia's fragile successor states, the authors explore plurifold analytical levels, including local, regional, transnational, European and global perspectives. The authors comprehensively demonstrate how politicizing history, in the postwar and postcommunist societies of what was once Yugoslavia, has prevented both reconciliation and democratization."-Sabine Rutar, Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, Germany"Ognjenovic and Jozelic focus here on the former Yugoslavia before and after its fragmentation to explore and evaluate the various uses of histories by nationalists, both those who promoted 'federal nationalism' and those who peddle specific local nationalisms in successor states. The book deals specifically with the Western Balkans, but these developments have their parallels in many other parts of the world, and the book will be useful well beyond the region on which the study is based."-Paul Mojzes, Professor Emeritus, Rosemont College, USA"The former Yugoslavia has become a battlefield for the 'Memory Wars', in spite of the wealth of judicially established facts and available evidences gathered about the atrocities in the region, and various initiatives aimed at dealing with the past and efforts at transitional justice. Focusing on three periods of Yugoslav history - the Second World War, socialist Yugoslavia and the Yugoslav wars of 1991-2001 - the contributors show that despite these efforts to deal with the past, sustainable peace and reconciliation across ethnic and religious groups remain a distant aim." -Marijana Toma, Center for Cultural Decontamination, SerbiaThis book analyzes how nationalists in the former Yugoslavia have politicized history to further their political agendas, retaining and prolonging conflict among different cultural and religious groups, and impeding the process of lasting reconciliation. It explores how narratives have been (mis)used, drawing on examples from all of the former Yugoslav republics. With contributors from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, it provides a vital assessment of how nationalists have attempted to (re)shape public collective memory and relativize facts.

Theodore (Ted) 'Tah' Henning II was first inspired to write Naked Gadarene Man after an 11 year hiatus from songwriting. He wrote it in about thirty minutes! As he mused about the song, an angel of God literally spoke to him and said, 'Now go sing it to prisoners in jail.' This voice spoke to him three times this same command. After meeting Chp. Don Anderson, they two began a three and a half year association doing mini-crusades in the local county jail. In the process, God inspired Theodore with more songs that ministered God's loving message to prisoners everywhere. TRAIN IS A COMIN' is an outgrowth recording of some of those inspirational songs. Recorded at Grayham's Studio315, a whole host of vocalists and musicians collaborated for the project. Notables are Terry Scherrer who played bass on all songs, Billy English provided drums and percussion, Gary Carpenter did peddle steel guitar, Kirk Rutherford lead guitar, Sherry Hill did a guest violin spot, Joseph Bunger did several keyboard arrangements and Larry Ray Reed provided his Saxaphone expertise. All in all, we hope you enjoy these inspirational songs in a variety of genre styles. The Biblical messages contained in them are timeless.
