Self deception in "Memento" (Christopher Nolan, 200) and "The Machinist" (Brad Anderson, 2004). How memory loss is shown as a product of guilt (eBook, PDF)

Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Film Science, grade: 72, University of Greenwich, course: Film Studies, language: English, abstract: Throughout this essay I explore the ways in which the memory loss of Trevor Reznik and Leonard Shelby can be seen as a symptom of guilt. Whilst it may be drawn that Trevor's mental health is impacted by his insomnia, and Leonard's condition is explained by the accident, the complex narratives allow various readings, through which it can be speculated that the tormented mental states of both men results in a process of self deception, of which memory loss is a key element. Throughout the films there are various "clues" in the form of flashbacks, formative techniques, and the doubling of personality which suggests their guilty conscience plays a prominent role in their amnesia. Whilst the protagonists' lives are controlled by their inability to remember, their memory loss can be seen as a coping mechanism to shield traumatic events of their personal history from their current selves. In all, I discuss how the abnormal mental states of the protagonists can be seen as a result of psychological trauma and a guilty conscience, through which their subsequent memory loss is used in a process of deception.

Journal of the Plague Year , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 608min

First published in March 1722, 57 years after the event that struck more than 100,000 people, Journal of the Plague Year is a compelling portrait of life during London's horrific bubonic plague. Through the eyes of H.F. (speculated to be Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe, from whose journals the book was supposedly adapted) we witness great grief, depravity and despair: crazed sufferers roam the streets, unearthly screams resound across the city, death carts dump their grisly loads into mass graves, and quackery and skulduggery feed on fear. But there is kindness and courage too, as mutual support and caring are upheld through the worst of days. Defoe's Journal is considered one of the most accurate accounts of the plague, and includes many contemporary theories about the disease, along with rolls of the dead and a literary mapping of London, street by street, parish by parish. It is a fascinating and intimate account from one of the earliest proponents of the novel. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio. ungekürzt. Occupied Earth: Stories of Aliens, Resistance and Survival at All Costs , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 733min

For years, writers and filmmakers have speculated about the possibility of the Earth being invaded by aliens from another planet. But what if the aliens have been watching us, infiltrating us via human collaborators, or even surgically altering themselves to look human? Occupied Earth is a groundbreaking anthology that explores the idea of what the world would look like years after its conquest. Twenty years after a successful invasion by the Makh-Ra, human beings still exist, only they have become subservient to a new race of occupiers who now govern the devastated planet. But, as much at things continue with some sense of normalcy, something has happened in the Mahk-Ra's empire. Earth, once considered a strategic beachhead of major importance to the empire, has been downgraded in its value. Things are starting to degrade. Our planet is the last place any self-respecting Mahk-Ra officer wants to be assigned. Yet, despite everything, life continues. Occupied Earth brings us face to face with annihilation - and shows how we can pull ourselves back from the brink. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Elise Arsenault, Michael Hinton. Seeded Deep 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 17min, (USK 18)

Rodriguez is captain of the scout ship Eleanor, which had carried Wren Fisher, the scientist who discovered a plant-animal hybrid that could potentially change humankind's reality on a monumental scale. The medical possibilities are beyond imagination. However, upon close reading of the report that Wren had submitted before her presumed death, the scientists on the Harbinger speculated that any interaction with the new species would lead to death for the human or other equally horrifying consequences, such as rapid phenotype expression changes due to radically altered DNA. Although all the ramifications and implications of the new information is not completely understood yet, the conclusion is definite - the crew has to get out of there. And even more upsetting: anyone who has come into any contact with the plantimals is going to be left on the planet's surface permanently. When young and beautiful crewmember Alexis Anderson starts acting very strangely, she's going to have to be taken...hard and without protection. Rodriguez knows it's a matter of life or death to make Alexis cum. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sierra Kline. The Bridge at Chappaquiddick , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 563min

And on its surface, the Chappaquiddick Incident (as it has infamously become known) was a simple but tragic traffic accident. However, its political fallout caused it to become the most speculated-upon car accident until Princess Diana's fatal ride, some 28 years later: Was Kennedy drunk? Was he trying to conceal an affair by deliberately killing Kopechne? Why did he wait for so long before reporting the accident? And who else was involved? Olsen tells the tale with as much detail as was made available to him. Though there is apparently only a single living eye-witness to the accident (Kennedy himself, who described having the "sensation of drowning" on live television a week later), Olsen tracks down the incongruous statements made by others who were indirectly involved and comes to a potential conclusion which would be difficult to refute. There is no legal evidence of this conclusion, of course, but his alternate explanation of events turns much of the circumstantial evidence into a logic-of-sorts. And his presentation thereof causes one to reflect seriously on the nature of the official record of events as told through Kennedy's lips. ungekürzt. Language: English. Dead Coast: Living Dead, Book 3 , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 444min

The origins of the outbreak were never in dispute, although at first almost no one believed the dead were actually rising. When the island nation of Haiti was struck by wave after wave of violent earthquakes killing thousands, the Z-virus lurched spectacularly to life. Early reports of cannibalism from inside the country were disregarded until shocking live video splashed across the world's television and computer screens. Suddenly everyone was a believer. Nevertheless, in many ways it still didn't seem real. Anything could happen out there, in the barbarous realm of the third world, beyond the pale of civilization. There were myriad reasons that it could never happen here. Health and security protocols, a literate, well-informed public, etc., were all on our side. In truth, the virus was already here and spreading like the viral videos sent out from Haiti during the first days after the quake. News anchors and subject-matter experts (yes, there were subject-matter experts on the living dead) speculated and conjectured until theory gave way to the infected, pus-filled reality breaking down doors and smashing through windows with flailing, rotten hands. ungekürzt.
