This true story is for anyone whose plans have veered alarmingly off-piste. It will make you laugh. It might also make you cry. Jennifer Gardner quickly discovers that going to Hong Kong to live a beautiful and rich new expatriate life is, as the Chinese proverb says, like looking for ivory in a dog's mouth. Her new home, unlike those of her favorite authors, is not Tuscany or Provence. Neither is it toddler-free. She should have seen it coming, really. Enduring extreme heat, isolation, and strange expatriates turns out as easy as a snake trying to swallow an elephant. Jen's husband has work problems, and the local food, throngs, and hospital all intimidate. Jen's cheery resolve and her health, waver. Then disasters strike. But with them come surprises. Happiness - and hope - hide everywhere. Who can resist a Chinese opera loving taxi driver with eyebrows like blackbird's wings, or dreams that really happen, or an oasis delivered to one's door? Or befriending a wise and magisterial woman, who can kill a rat with one stamp of her foot? Due to Foreseen Circumstances celebrates the treasures awaiting us in life's toughest seasons. ungekürzt. In the 1940s, there were few actors who personified the all-American look like Burt Lancaster, who set Hollywood ablaze quickly with performances in movies like The Killers, The Flame and the Arrow, and The Crimson Pirate. Indeed, his status as a heartthrob was cemented by 1953's From Here to Eternity, when he and Deborah Kerr shot a romantic scene on a Hawaiian beach that ensured the film's inclusion in the American Film Institute's Top 100 Romantic Films of the 20th century. As it turned out, however, that was just the first phase in a critically acclaimed career that would span over 40 years. As Lancaster grew older, he wisely veered away from the early kinds of roles he had as a leading man and branched out into more distinguished roles that were also more challenging, earning him brand new levels of acclaim. In time, he would go on to be nominated for four Academy Awards for Best Actor, including a win for Elmer Gantry (1960) when he was in his late 40s. By the time he was finished, the American Film Institute named him 19th on its list of the 50 best actors of the 20th century. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Charles McKibben. The subjects addressed within the chapters of this book are those of most importance regarding receiving from God by faith and that are very clearly stated in the scriptures. It is my hope that this resource will help to bring perspective in regard to material wealth that is sought and received from God. Some faith movements have veered from the obvious intentions of God's Word in this area and new Christians are especially vulnerable of being swayed by false or imbalanced doctrines. Sometimes, mature Christians can be affected as well. While the chapters cover only a few aspects of the faith movement subject in regard to obtaining wealth, they are important ones in my opinion. I believe we are living in the last days of man's current dispensation. The time is short and as members of the Body of Christ, we must all do what we can to preserve our valued Christian beliefs. Contents: Chapter One: Keeping Proper Perspective on Major Bible Doctrines Chapter Two: Is Wealth Beneficial to All Christians? Chapter Three: God Knows What Blessings We Need Chapter Four: Do We Confess Things into Our Lives? Chapter Five: Ministries Investigated for Extravagant Wealth Chapter Six: God Promises to Meet Our Needs ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Caroline Miller. On September 2, 2008, our twin daughters, Kayla and Kelsey, were returning home from Lubbock-Cooper High School after basketball practice. A 40,000-pound dump truck veered into their lane. Kelsey was driving. She was 18. Kayla was injured, but lived. Kelsey was a genuine Christian, the real deal. We were sent spiraling on a spiritual journey, a parent's worst nightmare. The audiobook describes our life beforehand, both as a family and where each of us was spiritually, but most of the story focuses on our travail after the accident. We were racked with grief, denial, questions, confusion, and anger, all of which shook us emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Each of us dealt with these things in different ways and at different times, yet certain common denominators existed. We also describe how each of us had to find forgiveness in our heart for the driver and owner of the dump truck. Nearly a year after Kelsey's death, we set down and started writing our story. Our goal was to help others who were going through a similar gut-wrenching loss, as well as anyone questioning their religious faith. Everyone contributed some, but the primary authors were myself, the father, and John Michael Vestal, Kelsey's boyfriend. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Sam Bogart. How autocracy flourished even as the economy failed in VenezuelaAn alarming number of countries that once were seemingly stable democracies have veered in recent years toward authoritarianism-a trend known as "democratic backsliding." One of those countries in Venezuela, which enjoyed periods of democratically elected governments in the latter half of the twentieth century but in the past two decades has increasingly descended into autocratic rule, coupled with economic collapse. Autocracy Rising, written by a veteran scholar of Venezuela and Latin American politics generally explores how and why this happened.Corrales argues that Venezuela's slide began with the policies of former president Hugo Chávez-policies that were based on government control of the economy and in turn generated a lingering economic crisis. After he succeeded Chávez in 2013, Nicolás Maduro not only entrenched the failed economic policies but also responded to various crises by establishing institutions that further undermined democracy. Each of Maduro's responses may have solved a short-term problem but collectively they destroyed both any pretense of democracy in Venezuela and prospects for his own long-term success.Corrales analyzes the lingering crisis in Venezuela by comparing it to twenty cases in Latin America where presidents were forced out of office. Regardless of how the current situation ends in Venezuela, His book illuminates the depressing cycle in which semi-authoritarian regimes become increasingly autocratic in response to crises, only to cause new crises that led to even greater authoritarianism.

On a beautiful spring morning in 1989, neurosurgeon and spine expert Volker Sonntag was just finishing rounds at Saint Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. At that same moment 16 miles away, a hard-charging boy named TJ veered his bike into the path of a speeding pickup truck. The impact all but killed the boy, leaving him with a shattered leg, severe internal injuries, a massive blood clot near the brain stem, and - but for the fragile spinal cord - a complete separation of the skull from the spine. This is the riveting story of how Dr. Sonntag's pioneering innovation that day launched him into the forefront of the emerging field of spinal neurosurgery. Surgeon to a who's who of royalty, celebrities, and politicians, his clear-eyed accounts of failures and successes, hostile turf wars, media accusations of quackery, political challenges, and cutting-edge technical advances reveal to the listener just what it takes to be a game-changer in one of the world's most harrowing professions. Revered by patients, residents, and fellows for his highly personal approach to teaching and mentorship, and for his example of life balance, in this book Dr. Sonntag also shares stories of his youth as a German immigrant in Cold War America that lend insight into how, with humility, sacrifice, honesty, compassion, industry - and humor - an individual can overcome adversity and achieve the American Dream. ungekürzt. Jonathan Franzen's gift for wedding depth and vividness of character with breadth of social vision has never been more dazzlingly evident than in Crossroads. It's December 23, 1971, and heavy weather is forecast for Chicago. Russ Hildebrandt, the associate pastor of a liberal suburban church, is on the brink of breaking free of a marriage he finds joyless-unless his wife, Marion, who has her own secret life, beats him to it. Their eldest child, Clem, is coming home from college on fire with moral absolutism, having taken an action that will shatter his father. Clem's sister, Becky, long the social queen of her high-school class, has sharply veered into the counterculture, while their brilliant younger brother Perry, who's been selling drugs to seventh graders, has resolved to be a better person. Each of the Hildebrandts seeks a freedom that each of the others threatens to complicate.Jonathan Franzen's novels are celebrated for their unforgettably vivid characters and for their keen-eyed take on contemporary America. Now, in Crossroads, Franzen ventures back into the past and explores the history of two generations. With characteristic humor and complexity, and with even greater warmth, he conjures a world that resonates powerfully with our own.A tour de force of interwoven perspectives and sustained suspense, its action largely unfolding on a single winter day, Crossroads is the story of a Midwestern family at a pivotal moment of moral crisis. Jonathan Franzen's gift for melding the small picture and the big picture has never been more dazzlingly evident.

What can fashionable ideas, blind faith, or pure fantasy possibly have to do with the scientific quest to understand the universe? Surely, theoretical physicists are immune to mere trends, dogmatic beliefs, or flights of fancy? In fact, acclaimed physicist and bestselling author Roger Penrose argues that researchers working at the extreme frontiers of physics are just as susceptible to these forces as anyone else. In this provocative book, he argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas - string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology. Arguing that string theory has veered away from physical reality by positing six extra hidden dimensions, Penrose cautions that the fashionable nature of a theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. In the case of quantum mechanics, its stunning success in explaining the atomic universe has led to an uncritical faith that it must also apply to reasonably massive objects, and Penrose responds by suggesting possible changes in quantum theory. Turning to cosmology, he argues that most of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. Finally, Penrose describes how fashion, faith, and fantasy have ironically also shaped his own work, from twistor theory, a possible alternative to string theory that is beginning to acquire a fashionable status, to "conformal cyclic cosmology," an idea so fantastic that it could be called "conformal crazy cosmology."
