Mythmaker
Necroweb.de: ... Erinnerungen an traditionelle Metal-Bands werden wach, wenn Roy Z. sie in die Finger bekommen hat: Bruce Dickinson, Helloween, vor allem aber Halfords Crucible.Hailing from Brescia, Italy, long running epic / progressive metal band TRAGODIA strikes back with it's 3rd full-length album, a brand new episode of challenging musicianship. Hitting harder than on the very well-received 'Theomachy', released in 2012, on 'Mythmaker' the band embarks on an exciting trip into the realms of Epic, merging the most diverse musical influences in what sounds like a companion to modern heavy metal. Building on classic metal twin guitars attack and relentlessly pounding rhythmic structures, as well on a vocally inspired performance and haunting almost space rock-driven melodies, TRAGODIA crafts its most convincing opus so far. Step forward into the realms of obscure myths and shining musical heights, follow the path of the Mythmaker! Power of One
Contemporary gospel music has often taken flack throughout the years, being criticized as 'cheesy', or having a very 'dated' sound. In many cases this is true, as Christian artists have strived to mimic what's on the radio, rather than carve out a niche all their own. As a result, the genre - for the most part - stays within the confines of the church community. But every so often, an artist emerges to break the mold and be the exception to the rule. Jita is one of those artists that show such promise. On her EP release Power of One, we are given three versions of the album-titled song: contemporary, Spanish, and one with what I would consider as having a Caribbean flare. This is a fun song with a message that can definitely be utilized in a joyous church celebration. The lyrics sound particularly pretty in Spanish. 'Lean On' exemplifies Jita's smooth voice over lush synthesized chord progressions. I could have listened to the song without any drum programming at all. Her voice could have carried the entire track with very light instrumentation. It takes on more of an RnB feel once the drums come in after about a minute in. The lyrical content has both spiritual and emotional implications. With lines like, 'I ran into your arms today. I ran so I could get away - from all the news and all the pain', it's hard for people to not find something to relate to. The real gem of the album, though, is the remix for 'I Need You'. This is house music packed with lots of harmony and soul. A wonderful dance track that competes with the best of them. This song reminded me of the classic house number 'Good Life' from Inner City (which by the way, is a huge compliment). The word that keeps coming to mind when listening to Jita is 'smooth'. Vocally, she stays in her lane, only venturing out when needed. There's no Mahalia Jackson wailing on here, but you'll be hard-pressed to find Jita sing a bad note. I sure would love to see her do some more dance numbers in the vein of the 'I Need You' remix. But, I suppose that would depend on where and how the Spirit leads.- Shop: odax

Low Side of OK
Faded formed in the summer of 1997, emerging from the depths of the gloomy, foggy sunset district of San Francisco. The band featured darren thompson on guitar, molly pettit on vocals, marco zermeno on bass guitar, and jeremy true on lead guitar, sampling and everything else. Most of the music was written by jeremy, with a few notable collaborations with longtime bandmate darren. Jeremy and molly shared lyrical duties, often collaborating on lyrics for maximum effect. Darren and Jeremy had been playing together in bands since 1990, taking on the shoegazer/alternative/dream pop style around 1993. Their two-guitar interplay allowed for a rich, layered, sound, with a variety of complementary guitar effects, often compared to the Cure, Slowdive, or My Bloody Valentine. After a few years and a few singers, Molly Pettit was recruited to front the band in 1997, with a definte Siouxsie Sioux influence on her sleeve. Bassist Marco Zermeno, fond of bass heavy groups as New Order and U2 rounded the ensemble nicely. They recorded a demo tape which was warmly reviewed by San Francisco's The Guardian, and began playing the local club scene. Faded quickly started to gain a following as an incediary live band. In late 1998 faded began recording a five song e.p. which would later be called 'the low side of ok'. The songs were picked to show the diversity of sounds often blended together by the band. The first song, 'Ascend', was reminiscent of Chapterhouse, with guitars by the Cure, and an epic sing-a-long chorus... 'Over' cranked up the distortion further and launched into a beat-heavy feedback assault akin to the Jesus and Mary Chain or CURVE... 'World View' featured echoing guitars a la Flock of Seagulls or Slowdive with a driving bassline like a lost Joy Division song, with Pettit's angst ridden vocals soaring high above... The bouncy 'Slow Shadows' invoked mid-era His Name is Alive, the Cure and Luna all at once, with both guitars and bass intertwining... The e.p. closer, 'Cold Wind' was the obvious choice for a swan song, as it was the finale of every set for years and years! The chorus of 'whoever said that love was good, never had a love like this' belted out over a wall of sound that would have made My Bloody Valentine proud made this a fave of clubgoers, and the tortured feedback outro made fans of Sonic Youth smile... in 1999 'the low side of ok' was released to critical acclaim and heavy college radio & club rotation. Songs such as 'Over' and 'Cold Wind' were heard blasting from many bay area goth clubs, and KZSC radio pranced 'the low side of ok' the #1 new gothic/darkwave album of the year for 2000. ^#^however, in 2000 internal friction caused the departure of Zermeno and Pettit (thompson had left the band for personal reasons in early 99). this caused a major rethinking of the band for main songwriter Jeremy True, who at this point had been working on this music project for about 7 years straight, with different members. Reluctant to advertise for a whole new band, and looking at a backlog of many 'solo project' songs that had been put on the backburner for many years, True decided to re-envision the band, with his wife, Christina True. Together they re-christened the band 'faded sf' as a nod to San Francisco, and to separate themselves from the glut of new bands all naming themselves 'faded' (in 2004 eight different bands were all attempting to professionally use the same name!) Christina took over the bass guitar playing, and vocal duties for half of the songs. The songs she sang lead on remained close to the classic 'faded' style, while vocally bringing to mind Darling Buds or the softer tones of Bilidna Butcher (from my bloody valentine) Jeremy started singing lead again on many songs, after years of occasional harmony work, with comparisons to Dean Warham of Luna, or Bernard Sumner of New Order. The sound of the band has changed to an extent, leaning more towards bands like New Order, Red House Painters, the Cure, nine inch nails, and Slowdive, while retaining the Curve-ish/Cocteau Twins-esque songs from before. An 'indie' sound is more prevalent, however for every song with a detuned acoustic, there is at least one ambient techno song, for every emo-rock epic, there is a hard driven darkwave dirge... 'broken down, breaking down' was an 8-song CD released in a limited pressing in 2003, featuring the new sound and lin-up. a few years later the band went on hiatus from touring and recording, just recording songs for their own enjoyment... threatening to release them all upon an unsuspecting public sometime in the near future..! Faded strive to bring the idea of a strong melody back to contemporary songwriting. Jeremy shows no reservations about wearing his influences on his sleeves--blending the guitars of the Cure, New Order, and Slowdive, and mixing the rhythms and textures of Curve, Nine Inch Nails and the Jesus and Mary Chain to create 'a wall of sound that would make both Phil Spector and My Bloody Valentine proud', as described by BAM. ^#^write us- say hi!!!- Shop: odax

End Times Diner
Backseat Bordello is more than just a good time. It's the official project name for the layered acoustic duo consisting of Danielle Egnew on Vocals / Guitar and Kristen Coyner on Vocals / Guitar, both founding members of power female band Pope Jane. The project was conceived by Coyner, who has spent the last 12 years behind the drums in Pope Jane and was searching for a more expressive outlet for her songwriting, as well as a home for the more folk-adjacent stylings in Egnew's catalogue. Produced and mixed by Danielle Egnew, Backseat Bordello is founded on the signature vocal blend of both Egnew and Coyner set within an intimate setting of carefully woven and orchestrated guitar work by both artists, featuring acoustic slide and lead guitar by Egnew. The eleven song debut CD "End Times Diner" is thoughtful and traveling, reflective of concerns surrounding twenty-first century living. The song "Dashboard Mary", penned by Egnew, chronicles the last moments in a woman's life during her own suicide: "And she cried to Dashboard Mary / Would she make way in the heavens for her kind". The anthem "Rise Up", written by Coyner, reaches out with a universal message of courage to oppressed peoples everywhere from an LGBT perspective: "You must rise up / You must speak out / You must be brave now / You must shout". Though thick with concepts, the album is also peppered with whimsical observations such as "Miraculous", a lilting tune written by Egnew: "Looking up in the Hollywood Hills / She's wearing hundred thousand dollar espadrilles / Stitched together in Chinese mills for a dime a pair, but the brand's a thrill / It's not miraculous/ It's just the way it is". And wrapping the feel of the album is "Blind", the swampy, slide-heavy ode to obsession, authored by Coyner: "You've got me twisting and churning and tossing and turning tonight / Shaking and burning, and yearning but losing the fight / You've been dancing around in my head / I wish I was blind". As track eleven, Egnew and Coyner recorded a cultural favorite, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", in one of the most emotive and vocally stunning arrangements to date, ending with a dynamic 32 track layered chorus of Hallelujah that features choral arrangements by Egnew.- Shop: odax

Holy Roller
Kim Schaefer is a 21 year old folk pop-rock artist from Chicago. Combining a powerful voice, angelic falsetto, and unapologetic acoustic guitar strumming, Kim creates a sound that is uniquely hers. While having been compared vocally to such strong female vocalists as Natalie Merchant and Alanis Morrisette, Kim counts artists such as Brandi Carlile, the Indigo Girls, Eisley, and Elliott Smith (among many others) as her influences. Not only is her voice an instrument to be reckoned with, Kim Schaefer is a very talented song writer. With an acute ear for catchy melodies and a Mary Ford-esque ability to harmonize with herself, Kim creates songs you're sure to sing to yourself in the shower. Kim recently recorded and released her debut EP Holy Roller. The album is a collection of folk, country, bluegrass and pop influenced rock songs with subjects ranging from shotgun weddings to murder to love. You won't believe the voice that comes out of this petite young female, but you'll feel it in your bones. Kim's the real deal! Sui Generis
Nav-Vii (pronounced: Nah-Vee). A native of San Francisco, California, Nav-Vii now resides in Atlanta, Georgia. His music career kicked off in Atlanta, Georgia in 2005, and since that time has made a big name for himself in the underground music scene. With a broad fan base internationally, Nav-Vii has groomed his eclectic style to perfection. Nav-Vii is an expert with many unique musical details which makes his style very original and hard to compare to other musicians. When asked who he admires the most in music, he replied: "I truly admire musicians of all kinds and any creativity that expresses each person as an individual." As broad musically as an artist can be, Nav-Vii has several tracks that show appreciation in many different genres. If you listen carefully, you will hear many drum patterns and synthesizers that are simply unmatched in modern Ambient Electronica music. Throughout his music you will hear a strong Ambient, Soundtrack, Electronica, Trance, Breakbeat, Ghetto Tech, House and at times a Hip Hop feel. What is most astonishing about Nav-Vii's music talent is not only his ability as a music producer, but his skillful ability as a vocalist and writer. Fans and artists' alike have hailed Nav-Vii "The King of Ambient Electronica Music" which would be hard to argue when you compare his rhythmic style and mind-blowing synthesizers. In September 2008, Nav-Vii released 'All These Questions' which for many was the metamorphosis of Nav-Vii into the list of most talented Ambient Electronica musicians. In September 2009, the metamorphosis went beyond what many of his fans ever expected. 'Temple of Envy' which Nav-Vii calls his 'obra maestra' clearly shows not only how talented he is as a writer, but how brilliantly he is vocally. 'Temple of Envy' left many fans and artists wondering what Nav-Vii will musically manifest next. In June 2010, the long anticipated "The Wait of the World" was released. Nav-Vii's comment on the album was simply "I have finally mastered my style." However you want to interpret that comment, you should be as excited as all his diehard fans about the album. In April 2011, Nav-Vii released his first album with a slightly new style. The new changes have definitely accentuated the traditional arrangements and instrumentation of Nav-Vii's traditional sound and added more energy to the songs. In addition, these changes brought out the important elements in Nav-Vii's musical style and lyrics. All of these adjustments have propelled Nav-Vii's latest Album "Sui generis" to a new height of popularity. Tracks like "It's Going Down," "Sui generis," and "One Two Dejavu," force you to respect his Hip Hop swagger which is practically unheard of from an electronica musician. Tracks "I Came Into This World," Mr. Fly Guy," "Stars Over Japan," "Planet NV" and several others are sure to excite Nav-Vii's loyal Ambient/Electronica fan base. Currently in collaboration with various artists around the globe, we should expect many great things in the future from this Atlanta based super talent. Sound of One
Andy Garbi Debut solo album: the sound of one Label: Adventures in Sound Catalogue: AIS CD1001 "Inspirational...Garbi's extraordinary, multi-octave vocal range dazzles" Metro "Melodies turn into natural phenomena, into a foggy morning or a swelling ocean. Yet they are all pervaded by a glowing grace, a sublime beauty and dignity" Zillo Magazine "This is a remarkable album...It moves with much deeply felt sensitivity and beauty: with echoes of Samuel Barber's famous Adagio and Debussy's Des Pas sur la Neige plus Brian Eno's old school ambient" Newmusicreviews. Co.UK "Superb music" Musician Magazine "Beautiful" Hans Joachim Roedelius A deeply moving experience from the multi-award winning vocalist and composer, this haunting music embodies Garbi's experiences of extreme emotional and geographical environments. Featuring Andy's distinctive voice that spans almost four octaves and former Jazz Musician of the Year James Hesford on Cello, Violin and Viola, the sound of one is a Neo-classical work, reminiscent of the "holy minimalism" of Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and Henryk Górecki and also the crafted ambience of EG, 4AD and ECM labels. Recently featured on Radio 3's Late Junction, Classic FM's 'The Chill', '21st Century Classics' and The Chiller Cabinet playlist, Andy's dark, emotive style has been selected twice already to represent the UK for music internationally - gaining letters of commendation from the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Arts Council of England. * WINNER * - PRS Foundation For New Music ATOM Award - (Advances Toward Original Music) - Channel 4 Ideasfactory Film Music Award - (selected by oscar winning film composer Stephen Warbeck) - Birmingham Conservatoire Masters Prize - About Andy Garbi Once Upon a Time... there was a zonally deaf boy whose ears bled. Doctors tried to convince his mother that he could not hear at all but she knew different. He was just prone to being lost in his own head - that still happens but that was then and this is now. Strange that he should choose music to fill his life - here's how it all came about... Voice Andy is no stranger to experimenting with voice. A sparsely equipped sound studio at Art College was the catalyst for him to start producing soundscapes for his films using nothing more than what he could create vocally. In the studio there was no equipment available that could produce anything remotely akin to what he wanted so instead he sang into samplers and used chants and breath to create percussion and texture. He developed these techniques whilst fronting bands and sang whatever came naturally to him. This included using unorthodox techniques and scales which enhanced this 'other-worldly' feel. Although he had no previous exposure to vocal techniques of different cultures the press started to compare him to singers such as Natasha Atlas and Lisa Gerrard. Keen to know more Andy sought out Invaders of the Heart and the 4AD label and also began to look at Bulgarian music, Hindustani classical, Mongolian throat singing and Arabic muezzine styles finding something of what he already did in all of them. This sparked off a journey to India in 2000 to explore this inherent quality in his voice. Andy spent time in Calcutta with vocal master Santanu Bandyopadhyay and even joined a band in the Himalayas comprising Tibetan and Ghurkha musicians (click here for more info). Andy's voice has been mapped out at spanning almost four octaves and not being trained in any particular genre has allowed him to experiment and develop his own idiosyncratic style. Sometimes he uses lyrics, at other times he uses phonetics, even singing invented words. Occasionally lyrics just seem to get in the way - this is when he prefers to create pure sounds because they seem somehow more raw, more direct than words. Andy has sung with the following artists/bands: Nigel Kennedy Live performances Cellorhythmics Starcatcher (Rise of the Cellorettes), Live Performances Suns of Arqa Live Tours Headhunters Lead Vocalist/Co-founder Celtarabia Lead Vocalist / Live Tours Celluloid Backing Vocalist ACE Dance & Music Vocalist/Composer Music Andy's musical world is a retinal image of film, fairy tale and cult children's TV. As well as using his voice Andy loves to use found sounds that he records binaurally in different locations from the clamour of industrial sites to the eerie stillness of remote areas of the world. He manipulates these in the studio and uses them as another instrument alongside classical and traditional instruments from several cultures together with music technology. His dark emotive style has been featured on Classic FM's Chiller Cabinet and Late Night Lisa, also garnering acclaim from the spheres of stage, screen and dance. Although he is currently exploring the ambient neo-classical world, his background in World Dance, Urban Fusion and his own Anglo-Asian heritage means that he is always seeking out new territory. It is this passion that has gained the support of leading artists in all fields of the performing arts. In just five years he has worked with the violin virtuoso Kennedy, award-winning playwright Chris O'Connell, and Birmingham Royal Ballet. He has also made headline appearances at festivals across Europe. Andy has always felt privileged to perform. As co-founder of the group Headhunters he has headlined one of the largest stages at Glastonbury Festival as well as European festivals such as Terschelling's Oerol in the Netherlands. With Headhunters, Suns of Arqa and Celtarabia he has performed at festivals such as The Big Chill and Trans Musicale in France on the same bill as The Prodigy, Jah Wobble, Roni Size, Loop Guru, Trans Global Underground, Banco de Gaia, System 7, Square Pusher, Mix Master Morris, Peat Bog Fairies, Baka Beyond, Kangaroo Moon and Roy Harper. Through his successes of working internationally with music from different cultures Andy was offered a prestigious invitation in 2003 to represent the UK for music. The commission was from a groundbreaking Anglo/Dutch performing Arts initiative and the resulting composition/performance earned him a commendation from both the Royal Netherlands Embassy and the Arts Council of England (click here for more information). Also in 2003 and despite having no formal training in music Andy was invited to study for a Masters degree in composition at Birmingham Conservatoire. He graduated with distinction in 2005 and was also awarded the Conservatoire Masters Prize. In the same twelve-month period Andy also won two other awards for composition from Channel 4 and the PRS Foundation (click here for more information). As well as his solo work Andy has always welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with other artists which has brought his style to an increasingly diverse audience. He sang at the BAC Burst festival (May '05) with physical Theatre group Gecko and progressive band Cellorhythmics and has most recently sung with guests from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Several new projects will see Andy working with Japanese Taiko Drumming, experimental theatre and a new Suns of Arqa album (see news page for up and coming collaborations). Dancing with the Devil
Jr.Johnny does it again with what he calls his best release to date. Vocally, he captures the mood of each of these originals, while his harmonica soars and pierces the blues then reaches back and cuddles it. For harp lovers all over the world, this should be considered essential listening. Students of the instrument would be well-adviced to pay attention to these tracks too. Excellent guitar production also graces this package thanks to the efforts of Peter Corrigan and Russ Aldrich. The rhythm section (featuring Steve Minnich on bass and Mike Cairo on drums) is rock solid and Hymer Morgan is simply incredible at the piano and Hammond B-3 organ. It's always good to find original blues that floursih in the present, yet are firmly rooted in the tradition that make the blues enduring and such a truly great American art form.- Shop: odax
