Bergson postkolonial

Creative Evolution is a 1907 book by the French philosopher Henri Bergson. The work proposes a version of orthogenesis in place of Darwin's mechanism of evolution, suggesting that evolution is motivated by the “élan vital”, a vital impetus that may also be understood as a natural creative impulse. The book also developed concepts of time which influenced writers like Marcel Proust and Thomas Mann. Bergson's term "duration", for example, refers to an individual, subjective experience of time, as opposed to the mathematical, objectively measurable clock time. Bergson suggests that the experience of time as "duration" can best be understood through intuition. This theory of evolution makes possible the free emergence of individual intelligence. It is totally distinct from the deterministic hypotheses that are either mechanistic or teleological. Bergson argues by means of striking metaphor and analogy. He compares life to a wave spreading outward toward a circumference that is broken down at one point only and to an artillery shell from which new shells emerge when it bursts. ungekürzt. Dark Days in the Newsroom: McCarthyism Aimed at the Press , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 494min
Dark Days in the Newsroom traces how journalists became radicalized during the Depression era, only to become targets of Senator Joseph McCarthy and like-minded anti-Communist crusaders during the 1950s. Edward Alwood, a former news correspondent, describes this remarkable story of conflict, principle, and personal sacrifice with noticeable élan. He shows how McCarthy's minions pried inside newsrooms thought to be sacrosanct under the First Amendment, and details how some journalists mounted a heroic defense of freedom of the press while others secretly enlisted in the government's anti-communist crusade. Relying on previously undisclosed documents from FBI files along with personal interviews, Alwood provides a richly informed commentary on one of the most significant moments in the history of American journalism. Arguing that the experiences of the McCarthy years profoundly influenced the practice of journalism, he shows how many of the issues faced by journalists in the 1950s prefigure today's conflicts over the right of journalists to protect their sources. The book is published by Temple University Press. ungekürzt. Language: English. Narrator: Robert Thaler. Audio sample: https://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/090437/bk_acx0_090437_sample.mp3. The Book of Treasure (eBook, ePUB)
In their collaborative poetry, Dustin Junkert and Shane Moritz drag the compositional practice of Exquisite Corpse kicking and screaming into the 21st century. The two poets finish each other's sentences with often preposterous élan. Their subjects are projectiles of varying gravity launched at a Ouija board planchette. The scenarios they unfold describe a universe of pop-culture misunderstandings. Somewhere at the intersection of David Berman, Anne Sexton, Robert Pinsky, and Stephen Malkmus lies the lyrebird glory of these poems, their impact amplified by David Nichols's original drawings, whose air of tender perplexity provides a perfect emotional accompaniment. "In The Book of Treasures, curators Dustin Junkert and Shane Moritz expertly constitute a kickass hyper-contemporary below-the-bug-line Cabinet of Wonders.-Michael Martone "These paratactic poems deliver the shifting dimensions of life, but also the quick life of impulse They are acrobatically funny and urbane; they're also slyly imbued with pathos. They revel, actively, in the music of the sentence, especially, and in the weird hum of the contemporary western world. -Laura Newbern- Shop: buecher

The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 131min
A religious fundamentalist, a political operative, a primitive sermonizer, and an accomplice of worldly secular powers. Her mission has always been of this kind. The irony is that she has never been able to induce anybody to believe her. It is past time that she was duly honored and taken at her word. Among his many books, perhaps none have sparked more outrage than The Missionary Position, Christopher Hitchens's meticulous study of the life and deeds of Mother Teresa. A Nobel Peace Prize recipient beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was celebrated by heads of state and adored by millions for her work on behalf of the poor. In his measured critique, Hitchens asks only that Mother Teresa's reputation be judged by her actions - not the other way around. With characteristic élan and rhetorical dexterity, Hitchens eviscerates the fawning cult of Teresa, recasting the Albanian missionary as a spurious, despotic, and megalomaniacal operative of the wealthy who long opposed measures to end poverty, and fraternized, for financial gain, with tyrants and white-collar criminals throughout the world. ungekürzt. Economism: Bad Economics and the Rise of Inequality , Hörbuch, Digital, ungekürzt, 434min
Here is a bracing deconstruction of the framework for understanding the world that is learned as gospel in Economics 101, regardless of its imaginary assumptions and misleading half truths. Economism: an ideology that distorts the valid principles and tools of introductory college economics, propagated by self-styled experts, zealous lobbyists, clueless politicians, and ignorant pundits. In order to illuminate the fallacies of economism, James Kwak first offers a primer on supply and demand, market equilibrium, and social welfare: the underpinnings of most popular economic arguments. Then he provides a historical account of how economism became a prevalent mode of thought in the United States - focusing on the people who packaged Econ 101 into sound bites that were then repeated until they took on the aura of truth. He shows us how issues of moment in contemporary American society - labor markets, taxes, finance, health care, and international trade, among others - are shaped by economism, demonstrating in each case with clarity and élan how, because of its failure to reflect the complexities of our world, economism has had a deleterious influence on policies that affect hundreds of millions of Americans. ungekürzt.
